Overview
Backscatter Underwater Video & Photo is the largest underwater imaging retailer in the world, founded in 1994 by Berkley White on historic Cannery Row in Monterey, California — “only a few paces from the water” ([1]). The company describes itself as “the premier underwater imaging center on the west coast and the world wide web” ([2]).
Backscatter operates across five business lines: retail sales of all major underwater photo and video brands (new and used); equipment manufacturing with all engineering, machining, laser cutting, and assembly performed in its USA facility ([3]); warranty repair as the west coast service center for most major brands ([4]); distribution of brands including Olympus, Top Dawg, Hartenberger, Seatool, RGBlue, AOI, and Orcalight; and education through over 100 days of training-related dive travel, seminars, and photo safaris annually ([5]).
The company’s own product innovations include the MacroMate diopter series (2002), GoPro Flip filter system (2012), AirLock vacuum leak detection system (2013), M52 wide-angle wet lenses (2018), MF-1 Mini Flash and OS-1 Optical Snoot (2019), and the MF-2 Mini Flash 2 (2022). These products positioned Backscatter as both a gear authority and a manufacturer in its own right.
History & Founding
Early Years (1994–2005)
Berkley White established Backscatter in 1994 on Cannery Row in Monterey. The store’s location, steps from the water, gave it a built-in customer base: “Every weekend, we are blessed with 200-400 dripping wet divers just outside our front door” ([6]).
By 2002, Backscatter was exhibiting at trade shows including SeaSpace and DEMA, where it showed repaired cameras and Sea & Sea housings ([7]). At DEMA 2002, Backscatter debuted the MacroMate — an underwater removable diopter lens compatible with film and video setups, with a version for the Light & Motion Tetra producing 1:1 macro images ([8]).
The company quickly became a multi-brand dealer. By 2003, it carried Sea & Sea, Light & Motion, Olympus, Ultralight, Subal, Nexus, Zillion, and more ([9]). At DEMA 2003, Berkley White introduced Athena glass dome ports — optically coated glass domes “much less reflective inside than acrylic domes” — priced at approximately $799 for the 7-inch model with shade ([10]). Backscatter also began distributing Top Dawg video housings worldwide ([11]) and Hartenberger lighting, previously available in the US only from Germany ([12]).
In 2003, Backscatter was publishing educational content on its website, including a “comprehensive” article on transitioning from film to digital SLR ([13]) and an in-depth review of the Sea & Sea DX-100 housing for the Nikon D100 by Berkley White ([14]).
Growth and Expansion (2006–2012)
By 2006, Backscatter had grown its educational division to approximately 80 days of training-related travel annually ([15]), expanding to over 90 days by late 2006 ([16]) and exceeding 100 days by 2007 ([17]). The company supported “thousands of specialized retail and wholesale customers around the globe” ([18]).
At DEMA 2007, Backscatter and Reef Photo & Video began sharing USA distribution of Seatool products ([19]). Backscatter also became a dealer for Seacam by 2009 ([20]).
In October 2008, Backscatter announced a landmark merger with Underwater Photo-Tech, establishing an East Coast presence. The former Underwater Photo-Tech became known as “Backscatter East” ([21]). This gave Backscatter bicoastal coverage of the US market.
At DEMA 2009, Berkley White was credited as “the original instigator of the Imaging Resource Center” — the central exhibition area clustering all underwater photography and videography products at the trade show. Eric Cheng wrote: “THANK YOU, Berkley” ([22]).
In October 2012, Backscatter was appointed the distributor for Olympus Underwater products for North America and the Caribbean — a significant vote of confidence from a major camera manufacturer. Jim Decker stated: “In the past few years Olympus has shown a renewed commitment to the dive market with their PEN and tough series lines. We look forward to working with Olympus, dive shops, and dealers” ([23]). This partnership continued for years, with Olympus sharing booth space at Backscatter’s DEMA exhibits through at least 2018 ([24]).
COVID Pivot and Continued Innovation (2020–2023)
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Backscatter pivoted to live video content on a weekly basis, launching sessions on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube starting April 2020. The first session was “Our Favorite Olympus TG-6 Shots & How We Shot Them” ([25]). The company participated in the Wetpixel Virtual Show in 2021 as a substitute for in-person DEMA ([26]).

Own Products
MacroMate Diopter Series (2002–2014)
The MacroMate was Backscatter’s first proprietary product, debuted at DEMA 2002. An underwater removable macro diopter compatible with film and video setups, the Light & Motion Tetra version produced 1:1 images ([43]). The MacroMate was an achromat design providing approximately 2x magnification, with a beveled end allowing strobes to be positioned close to the subject ([44], forum — James Wiseman). It retailed for $500–$550 circa 2005 ([45], forum — kdietz).
By 2005, Backscatter developed a flip-up version that solved the problem of attaching and detaching the diopter mid-dive ([46], forum — James Wiseman). By 2008, all MacroMate diopters had been upgraded to coated achromatic glass ([47]). Backscatter also offered custom port fabrication — one user sent an Ikelite port to Backscatter and received a custom MacroMate-compatible modification 3–4 weeks later ([48], forum — wchen).
In April 2014, Backscatter released the MacroMate Mini ($89) — an underwater macro lens for GoPro HERO 3/3+. It attached to the company’s FLIP 3.1 bracket via 55mm threads, reducing GoPro’s minimum focus distance to approximately 3 inches. Constructed of aircraft-grade aluminum with two custom-designed glass optics and vacuum-sealed lens construction ([49]).
Neutral Density Filter System (2005)
Berkley White developed a rotatable neutral density underwater filter system that mounted on a fisheye lens, using the camera housing’s zoom control to position the dark portion of the filter over sunburst areas. Available in “hard line” and “graduated” types, from half-stop to 4-stop reduction. Designed housing-specifically for Subal and Light & Motion Titan housings. Demonstrated at the Seaspace convention by Jim Watt using photos from Indonesia ([50]).
GoPro Ecosystem (2012–2014)
Backscatter became a leading innovator in GoPro underwater accessories:
-
Flip-Up Color Correction Filter (May 2012): User-installable filter for GoPro Dive Housing that could be raised/lowered underwater for changing light conditions. No vignetting in any camera lens angle mode. Shipped late June 2012, available through “Backscatter dealers worldwide” ([51]).
-
Custom GoPro Housing (2012): Featured a glass flat port, 55mm filter threads, and a unique o-ring mount for polarizing and split neutral density filters. Described as “very popular” ([52]).
-
GoPro Handle ($39, 2012): Handle and tray system with foam grip, tripod mount, and hole for Ultralight or Locline light mount ([53]).
-
FLIP 3.1 Filter System (2013): Expanded family for GoPro HERO3 with universal filter shape, both side-hinged and top-hinged mounting, and the ability to attach two filters simultaneously for underwater changes. Three depth-rated filters: Shallow (5–20 ft), Dive (20–50 ft), Deep (50+ ft) — each laser-etched with designation. A 55mm threaded adaptor enabled use of any 55mm filter, including macro lenses, polarizers, and graduated ND filters ([54]). The system’s “world famous flip design” allowed “one finger access to color filters and lenses on the same dive” ([55]). By DEMA 2014, the system included a +10 macro lens, circular polarizer, and graduated ND options, plus a rubber press-on filter for simplified mounting at just $29.95 ([56]).
Bluewater Scootercam & Dropcam (2009)
At DEMA 2009, Backscatter debuted a new product line: the Bluewater Scootercam ($6,500) — an underwater scooter with space inside for SLRs and camcorders, featuring an Aquatica-compatible port mount capable of housing a Canon 5D Mark II behind an Aquatica dome port; and the Dropcam ($5,500) — a similar platform without blades or cowling. Both were software-controlled and programmable for focus, fire, and time lapse with almost any camera. A monitor remote upgrade was $1,499 and a timelapse/custom control upgrade $399 ([57]).
Wahoo HD Monitor Housing (2011)
Backscatter’s Wahoo HD was one of the first DSLR underwater external video monitors on the market. Designed and manufactured in the USA from aircraft-grade anodized aluminum, it housed the Sony CLM-V55 monitor (5-inch, 1.1 million dots) with all controls accessible including focus peaking. Depth-rated to 450 feet / 137 meters, it featured a true HDMI connection with a custom hard-wired 19-wire cable, oversized control knobs for cold-water gloves, and mounting holes in three locations. Available in Nauticam and Aquatica versions at $1,299 (housing only; monitor $499.99 separately). Backscatter tested the battery burn time at 3.6 hours of constant use with the NP-FM500 battery and offered free installation and pressure testing with monitor purchase. Reviewed by Shawn Heinrichs for Wetpixel ([58], [59]).
AirLock Vacuum System (2013)
The AirLock vacuum integrity check system creates and maintains a vacuum inside underwater camera housings to verify watertightness before diving. Prototyped at DEMA 2012 and released in March 2013, it was available in two versions: mechanical at $399 and electronic with LED Alert monitoring at $499. The system was “brand agnostic” with adaptors for Aquatica, Sea & Sea, Subal, Seacam, Nauticam, and Hugyfot housings, plus a fitting for Backscatter’s own Wahoo monitor housing. The port was watertight to 140 feet without the plug and to 600 feet with it properly installed ([60], [61], [62]).
Eric Cheng defended the concept in comments: “If this system says you are sealed, you are guaranteed not to have a leak. That is what it does” ([63], article comments). Erin Quigley, who tested a prototype on multiple trips, endorsed it: “$399 vs 5K? You want one” ([64], article comments). Jim Decker noted “the company is capable of providing custom engineering work to fit these to housings or products that lack suitable ports” ([65]).
M52 Wide-Angle Lenses for Olympus TG Series (2018–2019)
Backscatter developed proprietary optics for Olympus compact cameras:
-
M52 Wide Angle Conversion Lens ($399, July 2018): A 120-degree field of view underwater lens for the Olympus TG-5 in PT-058 housing, attaching via the 52mm threaded port. Anti-reflection coated with sharpness maintained to corners. No vignetting at full wide angle with zoom-through capability. Demonstrated at the Digital Shootout before shipping. Shipped with dome cover, rear lens cap, and travel case ([66]).
-
M52 Wide Angle Air Lens ($149, March 2019): A separate product offering 81-degree underwater FOV. A wet-mount lens that “cancels out the refraction effect of the flat port on the housing and restores the camera’s topside field of view underwater while also enhancing image clarity, sharpness, and contrast.” Full zoom throughout including microscope mode. 50-meter depth rating. Shipped with dome cover, rear lens cap, and fiber optic cable adapter ([67]).
MF-1 Mini Flash & OS-1 Optical Snoot (2019)
The MF-1 Mini Flash ($399) and OS-1 Optical Snoot ($149) were announced at DEMA 2019 and shipped December 2019. Designed together from inception as a matched macro strobe/snoot system — “We designed the Mini Flash and Optical Snoot together” ([68]).
MF-1 specifications: Guide number f/16; 500-lumen integral LED focus light; 6-step flash power and 3-step LED power; up to 1,400 flashes per charge; 2.5-second recycle at full power; powered by single Nitecore NL1835HP 18650 lithium battery; dual O-ring sealed battery compartment; automatic pre-flash cancellation detection via fiber optic; 100m/330ft depth rating; 375g in air, 150g in water; anodized machined aluminum. Included: 1-inch ball mount, YS mount, diffuser, spare O-rings ([69], [70]).
OS-1 specifications: Included 2 aperture cards (circular and oval) each with four different sized holes, projecting beams as small as 6mm. Click-on/click-off mounting with rotating snoot head ([71]).
Mike Bartick reviewed the system in February 2020, testing it in the US, Philippines (Anilao), and Papua New Guinea. He noted the 18650 battery choice was innovative — “commonly used for vaping, that has immediate high output and power on demand… the demand for power of the strobe closely matches that of a vape mod.” He found that every workshop guest he gave the system to “came back with positive results on their first dive” — unprecedented for snoots ([72]). Morten Bjorn Larsen reviewed it in October 2021, testing in Denmark and Sweden, finding broad community praise from photographers who “all praised the new mini flash with snoot from Backscatter” ([73]).
Note: The MF-1 had documented reliability issues, with some users reporting multiple warranty replacements. However, forum users consistently praised Backscatter’s customer service: “always took care of issues quickly” and the company was described as “generous with their warranty” ([74], forum — davehicks; [75], forum — dianna912, chrisross).
Macro Wide 4300 Video Light (2020)
Announced November 27, 2020, the MW-4300 offered 4,300-lumen output across three steps with an 85-degree beam angle at 6000K. A dedicated macro mode provided a 1,400-lumen spot beam. Powered by two Nitecore NL2150HP batteries with 50-minute burn time at full power. Compatible with the existing OS-1 Optical Snoot and Color Filter Set. Featured red mode for night diving and advanced signaling patterns. $399 introductory / $499 regular price. Shipped December 7, 2020 ([76]).
Mini Flash 2 / MF-2 (2022)
The MF-2 ($399), announced November 3, 2022, was described as a “major upgrade” and marketed as the “World’s Greatest Macro Strobe.” New features over the MF-1: automatic optical TTL for Olympus cameras; wireless remote power control; high-speed sync; improved 1,000-lumen focus light (double the MF-1’s 500); test mode and safety beacon; faster recycle time; larger battery with longer run time. Backward-compatible with all existing Mini Flash snoots and accessories. Shipped mid-November 2022 at $399 (combo with snoot $499). Accompanied by the Remote Lighting Muck Stick accessory at $49 ([77]).
Forum users found the MF-2 “much improved in reliability” over the MF-1 and praised it for macro and close-focus wide-angle work, though it was considered “too weak for wide angle” as a primary strobe ([78], forum — davehicks, hyp).

The company was featured in a dedicated episode during the 2021 Wetpixel Virtual Trade Show (Episode 219), showcasing their product lineup as a substitute for the in-person DEMA show ([118]). A DEMA 2022 extra episode also covered Backscatter’s booth and new products ([119]).
Community Relationship
Backscatter was a Wetpixel sponsor from at least 2006, frequently referred to as “our friends” and “our sponsors and good friends” by Wetpixel staff ([120]). The company loaned equipment to community members for testing — James Wiseman thanked “Stephen Frink and Berkeley White, who loaned me the lens” for forum experimentation ([121], forum — james).
At the first Wetpixel Google+ Hangout in 2012, Berkley White shared openly alongside Ryan Canon of competing retailer Reef Photo & Video. Commenter Steve Williams noted: “It says a lot about our shared passion that competing businesses like Ryan and Berk would go on and share together” ([122], article comments).
Stephen Frink and Backscatter had a particularly close industry relationship — Frink was photographed with Jim Decker and Berkley White at DEMA booths, and the Seacam USA booth at DEMA 2002 was “right next door to Backscatter” ([123]).
At DEMA 2006, Backscatter, Wetpixel, and fine-art printing company Pictopia planned a collaboration to “get Wetpixel’s Pictures of the Week printed and hung in a gallery space” ([124]).
Industry Impact
Backscatter’s influence on the underwater imaging industry extended beyond retail:
-
