Overview
Nauticam is a Hong Kong-based manufacturer of aluminum underwater housings and water contact optics, founded by Edward Lai in 2008. Lai brought more than two decades of experience in precision mold manufacturing to the underwater imaging market ([1]). Before founding Nauticam, he was an active underwater photographer, personally testing dual SB-R200 CLS fiber optic slave triggering systems for his D300 in a Nexus housing ([2]). He remained personally active on the Wetpixel forums throughout Nauticam’s history, diagnosing technical issues, explaining design decisions, and sharing innovations ([3]).
Nauticam debuted at DEMA 2008 as “a total newcomer to the industry” with a single product: the patent-pending WB-PORT, a translucent white iris for dome ports that enabled custom white balance underwater. Eric Cheng covered the debut, noting that the product addressed the emerging convergence of still and video shooting in DSLRs ([4]). Edward Lai personally responded to critics in the comments, beginning a pattern of direct engagement with the community that would distinguish Nauticam from competitors.
By late 2009, Nauticam had pivoted from accessories to full housings, launching the NA-D90 as its first production housing and announcing a North American distribution operation based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida ([5]). The company rapidly grew to become the dominant housing manufacturer in underwater photography by the mid-2010s, and expanded into optical accessories that fundamentally changed how underwater photographers approach wide-angle and macro imaging.
Design Philosophy
Nauticam’s approach was shaped by several design innovations that distinguished it from established competitors like Subal, Sea & Sea, Aquatica, and Ikelite:
Ergonomics and Control Access
From the NA-D90 onward, Nauticam prioritized bringing critical camera controls to the housing handles. The D90 housing was the first to place live view and record buttons on the right handle in a single control, enabling one-handed video operation ([6]). Levers replaced traditional push-in rods for commonly used functions, making operations easier at the fingertips ([7]). Alex Mustard, in his early D700 field review, noted that “few products have generated such anticipation and salivation from underwater photographers” on the Wetpixel forums ([8]).
Patented Port System
Nauticam’s patented locking port release lever was a key differentiator. Ports inserted straight into the mount without twisting or threading, eliminating the risk of extruding dry O-rings. A large red lock lever secured the port, and a silver unlock button released it ([9]). Critically, Nauticam also offered port adapters for Sea & Sea, Nexus, Aquatica, Subal, and Ikelite systems, dramatically reducing the cost of switching brands. Early adopter David Henshaw confirmed he could use existing Sea & Sea ports with a simple one-time bayonet ring replacement ([10]).
Optical Fiber Strobe Triggering
Nauticam housings were designed slightly taller to accommodate pop-up flash firing, enabling optical fiber connections for strobe triggering. This allowed TTL operation with Inon, Sea & Sea, and Nikon CLS-compatible strobes without expensive electrical sync cords ([11], [12]).
Speed to Market
Nauticam consistently shipped housings for new camera bodies faster than any competitor. The NA-D800 shipped approximately six weeks after the Nikon D800’s release in 2012 ([13]). The Nauticam NA-D850 was available “almost immediately” after the camera’s street date in 2017, and by 2018, housings were available before many photographers could even find the camera body to buy ([14]).
Competitive Pricing
Despite premium build quality, Nauticam priced competitively. The NA-7D housing had an MSRP of $3,199 with a street price around $2,800 — matching the Aquatica A7D at $2,800 street price for a comparable Canon 7D housing ([15]).
Water Contact Optics
Beginning in 2013, Nauticam expanded from housing manufacturer into optical innovator, developing a family of water contact optics that represented a fundamental shift in underwater imaging. Edward Lai personally designed these optics, using “hundreds of engineering hours utilizing computer software to model a lens that complements an entire system — camera, lens, port, air, and water — as a whole” ([16]).
Super Macro Converter (SMC) — 2013
The SMC was Nauticam’s first optical accessory, a wet-mount super macro conversion lens released in November 2013. It was designed specifically for underwater use, accounting for air-water interfaces that traditional magnifying lenses ignore ([17]).
Compact Macro Converter (CMC) — 2015
The CMC-1 ($320) was designed for compact and mirrorless cameras, providing more magnification than the larger SMC with all compatible compact systems. With the Olympus 60mm macro lens on Micro Four Thirds, it achieved a 2:1 reproduction ratio — “one of the most powerful macro imaging systems available in the market” ([18]). A CMC-2 version followed in 2016 ([19]).
Corrector Port Prototype — 2014
In December 2014, Alex Mustard began pool-testing an optical corrector port built by Carl Zeiss and adapted by Pete Ladell for his Subal housing. The prototype demonstrated 1-3 stops of corner sharpness improvement over a 230mm (9”) dome port with full-frame rectilinear lenses. Mustard shared his findings in a Wetpixel forum thread that grew to 115 replies and directly influenced Nauticam’s commercial WACP development. Adam Hanlon commented that the work “mirrors some developments that are underway with a few manufacturers” ([20]).
Wide Angle Corrector Port (WACP) — 2017
The WACP was Nauticam’s most significant optical product, a combination port and lens containing multiple elements of high-quality optical glass (approximately 3 kg) that corrected lenses to see optimally underwater while expanding the field of view to 130 degrees. Reviewed in detail by Alex Mustard in September 2017, the WACP was described as “a product aimed squarely at serious full frame stills and high-end cinematography.” Unlike dome ports, which create curved virtual images causing corner blur, the WACP used fully corrected water contact optics, providing approximately 4 f-stops of increased corner sharpness compared to traditional dome ports ([21]). Mustard noted it could be used with any housing brand via appropriate adaptors.
MWL-1 (Macro Wide Lens) — 2018
The MWL-1 ($1,850) was a wet-mount ultra-wide lens designed to work with 60mm macro lenses, providing a 150-degree field of view while focusing from the front element to infinity. Jack Connick of Ocean Optical Sales reviewed it in the Forgotten Islands of Indonesia and noted its “hidden beauty” was its small travel size — it could replace “a large 9” glass dome port, 90mm extension, zoom gear, and large camera lens” ([22], [23]).
WWL and WWL-C — 2020
The WWL (Wet Wide Lens) family provided wide-angle conversion for mirrorless systems. The WWL-C shipped in July 2020 at $1,035 ([24]), and the WWL-1B followed in January 2021 at $1,465 ([25]).
EMWL (Extended Macro Wide Lens) — 2020
The EMWL was Nauticam’s most ambitious optical system, a modular wet lens for extreme wide-angle macro (WAM) photography where small subjects are photographed at macro magnification within wide-angle scenes. The system consisted of three components: a focusing unit, a relay module, and interchangeable objective lenses (60, 110, 130, and 160 degrees). Autofocus was maintained throughout — “a significant advantage compared to other available relay lenses” ([26]). In September 2022, Alex Mustard field-tested the new 160-degree objective lens at God’s Pocket Resort in British Columbia, reporting “excellent” sharpness and declaring himself “sold on the quality” after just one dive ([27]).
WACP-C — 2022
The WACP-C ($3,283) was a compact version of the WACP-1 in the N100 port fitting — 36% lighter and 36% cheaper. It provided approximately 3 f-stops of corner sharpness improvement (compared to WACP-1’s 4 stops). Forum member dreifish described it as “Alex Mustard’s prototype lens,” confirming the lineage from the 2014 corrector port experiments ([28], [29]).
Optics Education
Edward Lai appeared on multiple Wetpixel Live episodes to explain the philosophy behind Nauticam’s water contact optics. In March 2021, Adam Hanlon interviewed him about optics design, noting that Nauticam optics were “some of the most discussed topics on the Wetpixel Forums” ([30]). Lai appeared again in September 2022 to discuss the history and philosophy of the optics range ([31], [32]).
Vacuum Check and Leak Detection
Nauticam’s electronic vacuum check system, first shown publicly at the London International Dive Show in March 2013 as a prototype with a Vacuvin pump and LED indicator ([33]), became one of the company’s most important innovations. The production system, reviewed in detail during the October 2013 Wetpixel Whale Shark trip to Isla Mujeres, featured:
- A multi-color LED system: blue (power on), solid green (vacuum holding), flashing yellow (partial vacuum), flashing red (vacuum lost), solid red with alarm (moisture detected)
- Temperature compensation to prevent false alarms when moving between air-conditioned rooms and tropical conditions
- A hand-operated pump requiring 10-15 pumps to achieve green status
- Six valve configurations including a dual-activation valve using BCD low-pressure inflator air
- Retrofittable to existing housings ([34])
The reviewer described an unexpected benefit: during the whale shark trip, he used the green light to confidently change memory cards on a small boat — something he “wouldn’t normally” risk — enabling him to capture a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with over 100 whale sharks and 50+ mantas ([35]). All new Nauticam DSLR housings shipped with the vacuum system as standard equipment from late 2013 onward.
Quality Issues and Responses
Stainless Steel Grade (2011)
In 2011, multiple users reported rust forming on stainless steel parts, particularly viewfinder rings and locking latches. Nauticam representative Chris acknowledged that “despite specifying high grade stainless steel when ordering material from vendors, Nauticam did see some parts shipped that had surface tarnishing or rust indicating a lower grade material was actually received.” Drew Wong conducted magnetic testing on his NA-D7000 housing and found several parts to be ferritic (lower grade), while equivalent parts on Seacam and Subal housings tested austenitic (higher grade). Nauticam implemented incoming material testing for all stainless steel deliveries and offered free warranty replacement of affected parts ([36]).
NA-550D Screw Issue (2010)
In August 2010, two NA-550D housing owners reported a screw fastening the Rocker Key assembly loosening due to vibration, potentially leading to flooding. Nauticam issued a prompt official response, redesigning the assembly and shipping free improvement kits to all NA-550D customers. Adam Hanlon praised the response as typifying “the reactive nature of Nauticam and the commitment Edward Lai has to his products” ([37]).
Carbon Fiber Float Arms (2013-2015)
Nauticam’s carbon fiber buoyancy arms, first previewed at DEMA 2012 and released in August 2013 ([38]), experienced widespread flooding defects. Multiple independent reports documented water ingress through the carbon fiber tubing or seals. Nauticam representative Ryan acknowledged it as “a frustrating, ongoing issue” and noted “a number of improvements to the arm design over time,” but failures continued from older stock. Users reported that repair attempts with epoxy were typically unsuccessful. Warranty replacements were provided, but some users switched to competitors including Inon, Stix, and H2O Tools carbon arms ([39]).
Latch Design Evolution
Adam Hanlon noted in his 2016 NA-D500 review that previous Nauticam housings had an issue with sand clogging the housing latches in muck diving environments, preventing proper closure. The D500 housing incorporated a redesigned latch that eliminated this problem: “despite my best efforts to get them to jam, they stubbornly resisted and worked absolutely smoothly for all 18 days and 59 dives” of muck diving in Lembeh ([40]).
Key Relationships
Alex Mustard
Alex Mustard was Nauticam’s most prolific reviewer and collaborator on Wetpixel. He wrote the first major field review of the NA-D700 housing in March 2010, noting the company’s “build quality, design innovation and ergonomics” while maintaining a critical eye on areas for improvement ([41]). His December 2010 field review of the NA-D7000 housing was the first major third-party endorsement ([42]). Mustard’s 2014 experiments with the Carl Zeiss corrector port directly preceded the commercial WACP, and the WACP-C was described as “Alex Mustard’s prototype lens” by forum members. He also conducted the primary EMWL 160-degree field review and reviewed Nauticam’s 140mm dome port for full-frame cameras ([43]).
Adam Hanlon
Adam Hanlon, as Wetpixel editor, wrote the majority of Nauticam product announcements (publishing over 150 Nauticam-related articles) and authored several housing reviews, including the detailed NA-D500 field review. He also hosted multiple Wetpixel Live episodes interviewing Edward Lai about optics design.
