Biography
Berkley White is the founder of Backscatter Underwater Video & Photo in Monterey, California, and one of the most influential figures in the underwater imaging equipment industry from the early 2000s onward. Described as “a leading internationally published professional photographer, instructor and expert in the field of underwater photography and videography” ([2]), White built Backscatter from a specialty retailer into a vertically integrated company that designs, manufactures, reviews, and sells underwater imaging equipment while simultaneously running the longest-lived underwater photography workshop series in the Wetpixel archive.
White co-founded Under Exposures, a travel company specializing in dive photography, with Dan Baldocchi of Light & Motion. Together they led photo expeditions for over fifteen years ([3]). White shares his photographic techniques through international travel events, seminars, free community workshops, and extensive online gear reviews and tutorials published on the Backscatter website.
White’s personal shooting gear evolved over the years. By the mid-2000s he was shooting Nikon with a Subal ND2 housing and FE2 dome ([4]). He later transitioned to Canon, shooting a 5D Mark II with Sigma 15mm and Kenko 1.4x teleconverter in an Aquatica housing, diving with a KISS Sport rebreather ([5]). He was known for hands-on, improvised problem-solving — at the 2006 Palau Shootout, Eric Cheng photographed him “MacGyvering on a diopter with parts from a soda can” ([6]).
White worked closely with Jim Watt beginning in the early 2000s. After Watt’s death in July 2007 ([7]), the “Jim Watt Award” was established at the Digital Shootout in 2008 as the top honor, given for the best image of the competition ([8]). White also called for images from the community for a memorial multimedia presentation for Sascha Dambach of Kararu Dive Voyages after Dambach’s death in a motorcycle accident in 2009 ([9]).
Contributions
Digital Shootout (2002—2018+)
White created and directed the Digital Shootout, the underwater photography world’s longest-running workshop and competition series. The event combined daily dives, seminars on shooting technique and post-production, free demo gear from major manufacturers, professional image critiques, and a photo/video competition with prizes exceeding $35,000—$45,000 annually ([10], [11]).
Co-directors included Dan Baldocchi (Light & Motion) and Gayle & Richard Todd. Staff over the years included Eric Cheng, Jim Watt, Erin Quigley, Sterling Zumbrunn, Mary Lynn Price, Jim Decker, Rusty Sanoian, Sy Harris, and Joel and Jennifer Penner.
Key editions by location:
- Fiji (2002—2004): Held at Garden Island Resort, Taveuni. The 2004 edition drew ~50 participants and was webcast live on Wetpixel by Eric Cheng and James Wiseman ([12], [13])
- Bonaire (2005, 2007—2009, 2011, 2013, 2017): Held at Divi Flamingo Beach Resort. The 2005 edition featured White, Watt, Cheng, and Baldocchi with ~40 participants ([14]). The 2007 edition had 40—50 still shooters plus video participants ([15]). The 2008 edition drew 58 participants ([16]). The 10th anniversary (2011) attracted 60 guests with $45,000 in prizes ([17]). The 2013 edition had 60 participants and nearly 20 staff ([18])
- Palau (2006): Hosted at Palau Pacific Resort with Sam’s Tours; 25 participants. White gave seminars on exposure, lighting, and “digital sunburst” techniques ([19])
- Little Cayman (2010, 2012): The 2012 edition at Little Cayman Beach Resort drew 80 participants and staff, with over a ton of demo gear shipped to the island ([20])
- Roatan (2018): Held at Coco View resort ([21])
White’s characteristic humor was a hallmark of the events. As he told each year’s participants before announcing winners: “We’re all winners here. Some of us are just prize-challenged” ([22]).
See Digital Shootout for full event history.
Monterey Shootout
White helped organize and present at the Monterey Shootout, a local underwater photography competition in Monterey. He presented at the 2004 film festival alongside Norbert Wu and Jim Watt ([23]). In 2011, he was a presenter alongside Rick Rosenthal, Stephen Frink, Chuck Davis, and Eric Cheng ([24]). He presided over judging in 2014 ([25]).
Equipment Innovation
Under White’s leadership, Backscatter evolved from a retailer into an equipment designer and manufacturer:
- ND graduated filter system (2005): A rotatable neutral density filter for controlling sunburst exposures underwater, mounted on fisheye lens via zoom gear. A novel approach to a persistent problem in wide-angle underwater photography ([26])
- GoPro solutions (2012): Flip-up color correction filter and custom housing with 55mm filter threads and macro lens capability ([27])
- Airlock vacuum leak detection system (2013): Housing leak detection technology; generated 194 forum replies, indicating significant community interest ([28])
- Wahoo HD monitor housing (2011): For Sony CLM-V55 monitor, rated to 450ft/137m ([29])
- M52 wide-angle wet lenses (2018—2019): For Olympus TG series cameras, priced $149—$399 ([30])
- MF-1 Mini Flash + OS-1 Optical Snoot (2019): Created the compact macro strobe category ([31])
Gear Testing and Reviews
White established Backscatter as the underwater photography industry’s foremost independent gear testing resource. He frequently obtained pre-production camera bodies to test fit in existing housings, providing critical early information to photographers planning purchases:
- Nikon D100 (2003): Reviewed Sea & Sea DX-100 housing ([32])
- Nikon D2x (2005): Shot with Subal ND2 housing and FE2 dome with 12-24DX lens in Socorro ([33])
- Nikon D3 (2007): Obtained pre-production body and tested fit in D2x housings from Subal and Sea & Sea, providing early compatibility data ([34])
- Strobe comparison (2007): Published systematic strobe power and buoyancy measurements, advocating for manufacturers to design more positively buoyant strobes ([35])
- Nikon D300 (2008): Tested with Sea & Sea MDX-D300 housing on sailfish at Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Declared it “the most significant advance in underwater digital photography since the Nikon D100” and noted that ISO 400 results were “clearly better than scanned slide film” ([36])
- Nikon D3x (2008): Tested pre-production body in Subal, Sea & Sea, and Aquatica D3 housings, confirming compatibility ([37])
- Canon 5D Mark II (2009): Published detailed underwater video shooting tips, including workflow for manual white balance, focus lock, and exposure technique. Worked with Aquatica to implement user feedback on housing controls ([38])
- Canon 7D / Aquatica housing (2010): Comprehensive underwater review covering both photo and video capabilities ([39])
- Canon 5D Mark III (2012): Tested video in cenotes of the Yucatan, Mexico. Found high ISO performance “far superior” to the Mark II and praised the improved 6fps and autofocus ([40])
- Canon EOS 1D-X Mark II (2016): Available light video tests published on DPReview in partnership with Backscatter ([41])
- Best point-and-shoot systems (annually): Co-authored with Jim Decker, annual evaluations of the best underwater compact camera systems, praised by Stephen Frink for “presentation and content” ([42])
Photography and Videography
White was an accomplished photographer in his own right, contributing images to major publications and events:
- Published in Alert Diver, UwP (Underwater Photography) magazine, and other dive publications ([43], [44], [45])
- Shot HD video of the wreck M.V. Keith Tibbetts off Cayman Brac with Rusty Sanoian, using Canon 5D Mark II mounted on a Sierra Dive Scooter with a Deluxe Scooter Swivel camera mount for stabilization ([46])
- Filmed over 200 hammerhead sharks at Cocos Island using KISS Sport rebreather (2014), producing a widely shared Vimeo video ([47])
- Featured in Wetpixel’s “Ask the Pros” series for both wide-angle techniques and split-shot photography, alongside professionals like David Doubilet, David Fleetham, and Franco Banfi ([48], [49])
- Participated in Alert Diver’s Bahamas Underwater Photo Week (2014) alongside Stephen Frink, Eric Cheng, Alex Mustard, and Cristian Dimitrius, shooting in Andros and the Exumas. Images were featured in Alert Diver’s Fall 2014 issue ([50], [51])
- Consulted for Chris Santella’s book “Fifty Places to Dive Before You Die” alongside Steve Frink, Stan Waterman, and Chuck Nicklin ([52])
Competition Judging
White served as a judge for major underwater photography competitions:

Conservation
White was an active voice for marine conservation in Monterey. In 2006, he organized a campaign to save the Monterey Breakwater from fishing, urging the community to attend a California Department of Fish and Game meeting to “finish a 10 year fight to save the Breakwater from hooks and spears… bring back the wolfeels and rockfish for all to enjoy” ([69]). He also supported the establishment of California marine preserves ([70]).
