Overview
The Digital Shootout is a week-long underwater photography and videography workshop-competition series founded by Berkley White of Backscatter and Dan Baldocchi of Light & Motion. Described as “a boot camp with benefits for underwater image-makers,” each event combines daily diving, afternoon seminars by professional underwater photographers, nightly slideshows with image critiques, demo gear from major manufacturers, and a week-ending photo and video contest with prizes often exceeding $25,000 in value ([1]).
The series grew from early Light & Motion-organized digital photography events in 2001 into a multi-location annual program that became one of the most important educational gatherings in the underwater photography community. Over its nearly two-decade run, the Shootout attracted 25 to 80 participants per event, featured staff from companies including Backscatter, Light & Motion, Aquatica, Nauticam, Canon USA, and Sea & Sea, and was closely covered by Wetpixel through live webcasts produced by Eric Cheng ([2]).
The travel operations were managed by Under Exposures, a dive photography travel company co-founded by Dan Baldocchi and Berkley White, who had been leading photo expeditions for over fifteen years by the time the Shootout reached its 11th year in 2012 ([3]).
Format and structure
A typical Digital Shootout week followed a consistent daily format established by the early Fiji and Bonaire events:
- Morning: Two-tank boat dives (or shore dives at Bonaire) with professional guides and staff photographers diving alongside participants ([4])
- Afternoon: Seminars on topics including underwater photo techniques, lighting and composition, Adobe Photoshop (multiple sessions), video editing, workflow and file management, and printing/sharing. Office hours with staff for one-on-one help ([5])
- Evening: Nightly slideshow of participant images followed by critiques from staff. Quality improvement was visible night over night ([6])
- Demo gear: Participants could try equipment from sponsors — housings, strobes, and accessories. At the 2012 event, “over a ton of demo gear was shipped to Little Cayman specifically for this event” ([7])
- Contest: At week’s end, participants submitted images in categories including Wide-Angle Traditional, Wide-Angle Unrestricted, Macro Traditional, Macro Unrestricted, Video, and (from 2009) Compact Camera / Point and Shoot. “Traditional” categories restricted post-processing to brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness — no cloning or digital manipulation — while “Unrestricted” categories allowed any manipulation ([8])
The top award was named the Jim Watt Award (also called “Best of Show”) in honor of professional photographer Jim Watt, a founding staff member. As Berkley White said each year before announcing winners: “We’re all winners here. Some of us are just prize-challenged” ([9]).
History
2001 — Origins
Light & Motion hosted an early “Digital Shootout” event, described as an “all-digital event” that professional photographer Jim Watt attended. In November 2001, Wetpixel and Deep Blue Travel co-organized the Kona Aggressor II Digital Shootout in Kona, Hawaii. Eric Cheng produced a live webcast via Iridium satellite phone — one of the first live underwater photography webcasts — and Jim Watt participated as the professional photographer. Equipment support came from Ikelite, Light & Motion, Marine Camera, Sea & Sea, and Ultralight Control Systems ([10]).
2002 — Bonaire begins
The second annual Bonaire Digital Shootout was held November 9–16, 2002, in Bonaire with Jim Watt as speaker and judge ([11]).
2003 — Kararu Komodo seminar
A Kararu Digital Photography Seminar was held in November 2003 at Komodo National Park, Indonesia, aboard the Kararu liveaboard. Three trips ran back-to-back: the first led by Jim Watt alone, the second and third adding Berkley White and Dan Baldocchi to the staff ([12]).

Wetpixel involvement
Wetpixel was deeply involved in the Digital Shootout from its inception:
- 2001: Eric Cheng co-organized the Kona event and produced the first live webcast via satellite phone ([75])
- 2004: Wetpixel announced its formal involvement as a sponsor. Eric Cheng and James Wiseman produced the Fiji webcast with daily photo updates despite slow modem connections and midnight writing sessions ([76], [77])
- 2005–2007: Eric Cheng produced multi-day webcasts for Bonaire and Palau events, published as multi-page articles on Wetpixel with underwater and topside photo galleries ([78], [79])
- 2008: Eric Cheng served as contest judge alongside Berkley White and David Fleetham ([80])
- 2009: Wetpixel Quarterly Magazine subscriptions were among the prizes ([81])
- 2010+: After Eric Cheng’s departure from active Wetpixel operations, coverage shifted to Adam Hanlon and Sterling Zumbrunn writing post-event summaries rather than live webcasts ([82])
Evolution and legacy
The Digital Shootout evolved significantly over its nearly two-decade run:
- Scale: From ~25 participants (Palau 2006) to 80 (Little Cayman 2012, 2014), with staff growing from 4–5 core members to nearly 20 including manufacturer representatives ([83], [84])
- Prizes: From “over $10,000” (2005) to “over $45,000” (2011) in contest prizes ([85], [86])
- Video: Added as a competition category in 2007, growing in importance as DSLR video capabilities expanded. The 2010 event was notably shaped by Canon 5D Mark II video shooting with Magic Filters ([87], [88])
- Compact cameras: A Point and Shoot / Compact Camera category was added from 2009 onward, welcoming beginner photographers ([89])
- Gear testing: By 2011, manufacturer reps brought prototype equipment specifically for field testing, with staff producing online gear reviews based on Shootout testing ([90])
- Post-processing emphasis: From basic Photoshop CS in 2004, the education track evolved to include dedicated Lightroom and Photoshop workshops led by Erin Quigley and Sterling Zumbrunn ([91])
The alternating pattern between Bonaire (odd years, typically) and Little Cayman (even years) established a reliable rhythm, with occasional excursions to Palau (2006) and Roatan (2018). The Divi Flamingo Resort in Bonaire and Little Cayman Beach Resort became the event’s signature venues.
