Overview

Sea & Sea was founded in 1972 in Japan and became one of the most significant manufacturers in the underwater photography industry across five decades. The company pioneered mass-produced underwater strobes with its Yellow Sub series and built a reputation across three major product lines: the Motor Marine series of compact underwater cameras, CNC-machined aluminum alloy housings for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras (all designed and manufactured in Japan), and the YS-series of underwater strobes that became among the most widely used worldwide. ([1])

At the height of the digital transition in the early 2000s, Sea & Sea was one of the first housing manufacturers to embrace digital SLR cameras, announcing housings for the Canon D30/D60 and Nikon D100 as early as 2002. ([2]) The company maintained a close relationship with both Canon and Nikon, receiving pre-production camera bodies early to develop housings ahead of competitors. ([3])

Sea & Sea’s housings evolved from earlier cast designs described as “big and heavy” to sleek CNC-machined aluminum alloy bodies with hard anodized finishes by 2007. ([4], [5]) Dr. Alex Mustard praised the quality of finish of the latest generation housings at DEMA 2008 as “really impressive.” ([6])

The company was a regular major exhibitor at DEMA Show, sharing a large booth with parent distributor TUSA. ([7])

In September 2021, Sea & Sea was acquired by Fisheye Co., Ltd., with Kenji Omura as director. The acquisition was completed just before the company’s 50th anniversary in 2022. Omura stated the new company would “utilise its nearly 50 year heritage and pedigree to develop new products in the future.” ([8])

US Distribution: The TUSA Transition

In December 2003, Sea & Sea Japan announced it would quit as distributor in the USA “for financial reasons” effective December 23. TUSA (Tabata USA) took over distributorship as of January 1, 2004, operating from Long Beach, California under TUSA President Stephen Ashmore. The existing sales force remained in place. ([9])

From that point forward, TUSA handled all US distribution, warranty service, and dealer support. Sea & Sea’s booth at DEMA was co-located with TUSA’s. Key TUSA personnel included Kevin McDonald, who demonstrated products and conducted pool testing, and Andy Sallmon, who hosted press at DEMA events. ([10], [11])

Product Lines

Housings

Sea & Sea produced three tiers of underwater housings:

MDX series (aluminum, professional): CNC-machined from solid blocks of corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy with hard black anodizing. Depth rated to 100m/330ft. Featured port lock systems, sacrificial zinc diodes for electrolysis protection, optional leak detectors, and interchangeable viewfinders. The MDX line covered Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Olympus camera bodies from the mid-2000s onward. ([12], [13])

DX series (aluminum, consumer DSLR): Machined aluminum housings for mid-range DSLRs. Earlier models used a latch closure system that some users found problematic — if a latch caught in the wrong position it could damage the main O-ring. ([14])

RDX series (polycarbonate, entry-level): Introduced at DEMA 2008, these lower-cost housings targeted entry-level DSLR users. Made of 100% polycarbonate with plastic latches, rated to 60m/200ft. The Canon Rebel XTi (400D) RDX housing shipped with a built-in eTTL converter — unusual for the price point. Compatible with Sea & Sea’s NX, CX, and RDX port systems via adapter rings. ([15], [16])

DX compact camera systems: Self-contained camera-plus-housing combos including the DX-3000, DX-5000G, DX-8000G, DX-1G (based on Ricoh), DX-2G, DX-1200HD, and DX-GE5. These provided complete underwater imaging packages with fiber-optic strobe compatibility. The DX-1G Pro Package was particularly popular at $2,499 including strobe, arms, wide-angle lens, and Pelican case. ([17], [18], [19])

In 2013, Sea & Sea entered the compact mirrorless/advanced compact housing market with the MDX-RX100/II for Sony RX100 cameras — a full aluminum housing with 100m depth rating for a compact camera. ([20])

In 2022, Sea & Sea introduced the MDX-aU, a universal housing for Sony Alpha series cameras (a7IV, a7RIV, a7SIII, a9II, a1) — a forward-looking design with oversized rear acrylic panel and modular customization kits for different camera bodies. It shipped with a vacuum leak alarm unit as standard equipment. ([21])

Strobes

Sea & Sea’s strobe line was the company’s most widely recognized product category, evolving through multiple generations:

YS-90DX (2001): Digital strobe with pre-flash setting, shown at DEMA 2001. One of the first strobes designed to address the TTL pre-flash issue that plagued early digital camera and strobe combinations. ([22])

YS-90 Auto (2002): Announced alongside the digital SLR housing push. ([23])

YS-55TTL/E (2004): Entry-level TTL strobe. ([24])

YS-110 (2005): A major advance featuring three xenon flash tubes for 105x105-degree coverage, GN 22, DS-TTL via fiber optic, LED target light, and ~1 second recycle time with NiMH batteries. Designed to address drawbacks noted by Wetpixel users in previous models. Became the workhorse strobe for many underwater photographers. ([25])

YS-110a / Alpha (2008): Updated version with improved 1.9-second recycle time (full power) and better TTL exposure with compact cameras. ([26])

YS-250 PRO (2006-2016): Large professional strobe with removable NiMH battery, GN 32, 105-degree beam, 1.2-second full-power recycle time, and LED aiming light. Prototyped at DEMA 2006, field-tested at the Digital Shootout in Bonaire in 2007, began shipping late 2007. Slightly negative underwater (2.5 oz). Discontinued August 2016 — the proprietary battery packs were a known weak point. ([27], [28], [29])

YS-D1 (2012): Billed as “the most advanced strobe SEA&SEA has produced in its 40 year history.” Key specs: GN 32 (native 80x80 degrees), DS-TTLII with exposure compensation (+/- 4 stops), auto-sensing slave, 11-step manual control, LED target light, 100m depth rating. 25% more powerful and 10% smaller than the YS-110 Alpha. Retail $750, available February 2012. ([30])

YS-03 (2014): Budget compact strobe system with 100-degree beam, TTL-only operation, 4 AAA batteries. Sold as a complete “Universal Lighting System” package ($349) with compact flex arm, tray, and multi-core fiber optic cable. Targeted at compact camera users. ([31])

YS-D2 (2015): Retained YS-D1 specs with added audible TTL/ready confirmation and rear glowing panel with illuminated controls. GN 32, 200 flashes per charge, 1.5-second recycle time. Retail $719.95, shipping July 15, 2015. Manufactured in China. ([32])

YS-D2J (2017): Japanese-manufactured revision of the YS-D2, released in direct response to reliability issues with the Chinese-produced original. Same specifications, priced at $689.95. ([33])

YS-D3 Lightning (2020): New-generation strobe with GN 33, aspherical optical toroidal lens over two flash tubes for even light distribution, 105x80-degree native beam (110x100 with diffuser), continuous firing at GN 16 without interval, 0.8-second recycle at GN 22, target light 4x brighter than YS-D2 (usable as dive light), color-coded backlight panel for mode identification, and over-pressure relief valve. Optional dome diffuser widened beam to 150 degrees. Optional snoot with internal prism for aligned target/strobe light. ([34])

YS-D3 Mark II (2021): Updated version adding compatibility with Sea & Sea and third-party strobe triggers, redesigned control dials. Sea & Sea also released firmware updates for Mark I units addressing TTL overexposure with third-party converters, though these did not resolve widely reported triggering issues. ([35], [36])

TTL Converters and Optical Systems

Sea & Sea developed its own ecosystem of TTL conversion technology:

Ports and Accessories

Video Housings

Sea & Sea produced dedicated video housings alongside their still camera products, including the VX-S1, VX-S2, VX-FX1 (for Sony camcorders), and VX-G1 (for Panasonic NV-GS250). These were regularly displayed at DEMA alongside the stills lineup. ([49], [50])

Community Reception: YS Strobe Reliability Crisis

The YS strobe line experienced a sustained reliability crisis documented across Wetpixel forums from 2012 through at least 2022. This became one of the most discussed equipment issues in the community and drove significant user migration to Inon Z-240/Z-330 and Retra strobes.

YS-D1 (2012-2015)

Multiple users reported complete strobe failures. One user documented 4 strobes failing over a 3-month period — capacitors charged normally but strobes would not fire in any mode. Sea & Sea’s Japan service center could not identify the fault. ([132]) Other reported issues included overheating from successive full-power shots (documented in the manual but frequently encountered by users), and flash tube burnout. Backscatter reported multiple customers experiencing failures just after warranty expiration. ([133])

YS-D2 (2015-2017)

The Chinese-manufactured YS-D2 introduced more widespread reliability problems. One user’s brand-new pair failed on a trip to Raja Ampat — after 10-15 firings at depth, a strobe would shut down with battery warning indicators despite fully charged batteries. The YS-D1 backups functioned perfectly with the same setup. After returning the unit, the user waited over 3 months with no resolution from Sea & Sea, and emails to Sea & Sea Japan went unanswered. The user’s retailer reported 3 additional YS-D2 units returned for faults during that period. ([134])

Flash tube failure was another common YS-D2 problem — one user found the flash tube reduced to “a pile of powder” after 300 dives. Backscatter’s testing revealed a system fault dumping full output into the bulb regardless of settings, meaning tube replacement alone would not fix the issue. One user’s strobe flooded internally (not the battery compartment) and took nearly 4 months to be warranty-replaced, requiring shipment to Japan. ([135])

Other documented YS-D2 issues included parasitic power drain when powered off (batteries dead within 24 hours with the switch set to “off”), control dial malfunctions (firing at full power regardless of setting), and bulb/housing charring requiring $200+ repairs. Users reported total repair costs approaching the price of a new unit, and Sea & Sea’s recommendation to “buy new” rather than repair. ([136], [137])

YS-D2J (2017-2020)

The Japanese-manufactured YS-D2J addressed some hardware reliability issues but introduced a new TTL problem. Multiple users reported the strobe firing too early in TTL mode, apparently reacting to the camera’s pre-flash rather than the main flash. This resulted in photos appearing as if no flash was used, even though the strobe visibly fired. The issue particularly affected users switching from the older YS-D2 to the YS-D2J with the same camera bodies and cables. Multi-core fiber optic cables were identified as essential for TTL function — single-core cables that worked fine for triggering could not transmit enough of the rapid pre-flash/main-flash sequence. ([138])

YS-D3 (2020-2022)

The YS-D3 Lightning introduced battery protection mode failures — the strobe’s LED would blink red (indicating low battery) with fully charged batteries and refuse to fire. Users reported this occurring after approximately 100 dives/2000 frames, with no user-serviceable reset procedure. One detailed report documented methodical troubleshooting including multiple battery sets, end cap swaps, and terminal cleaning, all to no effect. The strobe required factory service to exit the protection mode lockout. ([139])

The YS-D3 also had widely reported incompatibility with third-party TTL triggers (notably UWT triggers). In a 127-reply forum thread, the UWT manufacturer confirmed the trigger did not support the YS-D3, and users found the strobe’s optical sensor significantly less sensitive than Inon strobes, requiring strobes to be held directly against the LED port to fire. This drove users toward either Sea & Sea’s own (more expensive) optical converters or switching strobe brands entirely. ([140])

Sea & Sea released firmware updates in 2021 to address TTL overexposure with compact cameras and third-party converters, but the Wetpixel community noted these did not resolve the triggering compatibility issues. ([141], [142])

Community impact: The cumulative effect of a decade of strobe reliability issues significantly damaged Sea & Sea’s reputation in the Wetpixel community. Multiple users explicitly cited switching to Inon Z-330s or Retra Pro strobes as a direct result. The pattern of slow warranty service (months-long waits, shipment to Japan required), unresponsive communication, and repeated quality issues across multiple product generations contrasted poorly with competitors.
