Biography
Erin Quigley is an Adobe ACE certified digital imaging expert, award-winning underwater photographer and video editor, and the creator of GoAskErin.com, a platform providing custom tutorials, workshops, and one-on-one digital solutions specifically developed for underwater photographers ([2]). Based in Los Angeles, California, she specializes in customized workflows and editing strategies using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom ([3]).
Quigley is widely regarded as the leading post-processing educator in the underwater photography community. Wetpixel editor Adam Hanlon consistently referred to her as “Lightroom and Photoshop guru” across more than a dozen articles, and repeatedly directed Wetpixel Live viewers to GoAskErin as “the best place to get detailed tutorials about editing” ([4], [5], [6]). Alex Mustard also cited her as the authority on editing workflows in multiple Wetpixel Live episodes ([7]).
In addition to her GoAskErin platform, Quigley has been a regular staff member and instructor at The Digital Shootout events since at least 2008, and a frequent presenter at DEMA Show Image Resource Center sessions. She is also a competition photographer in her own right, winning Best of Show at DEEP Indonesia 2011 and placing in multiple other international competitions.
GoAskErin Platform
GoAskErin.com evolved from a tutorial blog into a comprehensive post-processing education platform for underwater photographers. Key milestones include:
- Free tutorials: Quigley published a growing library of free video and PDF tutorials on GoAskErin.com, covering Lightroom and Photoshop techniques. By March 2015, she consolidated these into a “Master List” linking all available tutorials ([8]). By January 2018, the tutorials were reorganized onto a single landing page, with Quigley planning to add a new tutorial each month ([9]).
- Free PDF tutorials (2018): Released 9 free downloadable PDF tutorials covering topics including Develop module workflow, content aware editing, image selection for underwater contests, hidden tools, profiles, and range masks in Lightroom ([10]).
- “Nerd Alert” series: Short free video tutorials on specific topics, such as demystifying the new masking tools in Lightroom 11 ([11]) and addressing an Adobe Camera Raw bug affecting Mac users ([12]).
- COVID-era webinar series (2020): Launched free live Go Ask Erin Zoom webinars three times per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 11am-12pm PDT) during the pandemic. Monday and Friday sessions were classes; Wednesday was an “office hour” for audience questions. Recorded versions were available for $19 ([13]).
- On-Demand products: Developed paid on-demand tutorial packages, including the “Lightroom 11 Masking Magic” tutorial ([14]).
- Water Replacement Starter Pack (2021): Released a commercial product containing over 50 underwater background images and a 45-minute tutorial showing how to use Photoshop’s Sky Replacement feature to change underwater negative spaces. Priced at an introductory $39 ([15]).
GoAskErin also served as a prize sponsor for competitions, providing gift cards worth $300 as prizes at the Dive into the Pink Share Our Air 2020 contest ([16]).
The production team behind GoAskErin included Joel Penner of NewMediaSoup, who handled multimedia workflows including underwater footage, time-lapse, drone footage, and daily highlight reels ([17]).
Contributions
Post-Processing Education
Quigley created an extensive body of tutorial content spanning more than a decade:
- “Essential Post Processing for Underwater Photographers” series (2012): Video tutorial series using Lightroom 4, covering topics including white balance. She emphasized the importance of using before/after toggle views to avoid acclimatizing to color casts ([18]).
- Backscatter removal (2013): Published a tutorial demonstrating techniques using Photoshop CS6, combining selections, layers, the move tool, Gaussian blur, and noise ([19]).
- Adjustment brush in LR4 (2014): Reposted her tutorial about using the Adjustment brush in Lightroom 4, quoting Ansel Adams on dodging and burning: “Dodging and burning are steps to take care of mistakes God made in establishing tonal relationships” — adding that most of her tonal issues “can’t be blamed on God or Canon” ([20]).
- White balance tutorial (2014): Created a comprehensive tutorial published through Backscatter’s learn section, covering white balance correction, basic panel adjustments, adjustment brush basics, mask overlay, graduated filter, Smart Objects in Photoshop, clone stamp, patch tool, healing brushes, backscatter removal time-lapse, and high pass filter sharpening ([21]).
- Lightroom collections and Texture vs Clarity vs Dehaze (2019): Published tutorials explaining Lightroom collections as organizational tools and comparing the effects of Texture, Clarity, and Dehaze adjustments ([22]).
- Photoshop CC workflow tips (2019): Highlighted two important changes in Photoshop CC 20.0.5: the option to revert to legacy shift-key constrain proportions behavior in Free Transform, and the ability to toggle through healing tools with a single key by unchecking “Use Shift Key for Tool Switch” — critical for efficient backscatter removal work ([23]).
- “Photoshop Fear Abatement” (2021): Presented a session on surviving and thriving in Photoshop, covering layers, layer masks, and selections for those intimidated by the application ([24]).
- “Goo Gone” backscatter removal (2021): Free tutorial covering backscatter removal tools in both Lightroom and Photoshop, presented at two time slots for international accessibility ([25]).
- Lightroom 11 deep dive (2021): Hosted live tutorials covering the overhauled masking and selection tools in Lightroom 11’s Develop Module ([26]).
- Lightroom masking tutorials (2022): Presented “More Masking Magic — A Deeper Dive into Lightroom’s Masking Panel,” offered as free live events at two time slots ([27]).
- Water Replacement workshops (2021): Launched live teaching workshops demonstrating how to use Photoshop’s Sky Replacement feature with water backgrounds to transform underwater negative spaces ([28]).
Backup Strategy Expertise
In the inaugural “Wetpixel Asks the Pros” feature (2015), Quigley detailed her field backup strategy: she traveled with two 2TB external hard drives, using Lightroom’s import to simultaneously copy images to a master and backup drive. She also backed up Lightroom catalog files (.lrcat) to the backup drive on close. When teaching, she used mirrored drives and a backup utility to keep catalogs identical. She recommended bypassing Lightroom’s import engine for large video files due to its slowness, instead downloading directly to a folder and later adding clips to the catalog via Lightroom’s ADD function ([29]).
Workflow Philosophy
Quigley appeared on Wetpixel Live in November 2020, discussing with Adam Hanlon her complete workflow from shooting technique through to ingesting, backing up, organizing, and versioning images ([30]). Hanlon credited her as coining the phrase “The One Catalog to Rule Them All” — her philosophy of maintaining a single Lightroom catalog for all images ([31]).
She advocated for exposing to the right, commenting on Wetpixel’s “Ask the Pros” wide-angle article: “I was interested to see who does and doesn’t expose to the right. I wonder how many shooters really know what that means and why it’s important. In my book, it’s a must” (article comments, [32]).
Gear Testing
Quigley tested a prototype of Backscatter’s AirLock vacuum system on multiple trips, reporting that it “made a huge difference” with “an otherwise unpredictable housing.” She noted that the vacuum system allowed her to identify weak spots in her housing system before putting the camera in the water, calling it a worthwhile investment: “$399 vs 5K? You want one” (article comments, [33]).
She also shot 60fps test footage with the Canon EOS 1D-X Mark II for Backscatter’s DPReview underwater review ([34]).
Equipment Reviews
Quigley contributed equipment reviews to Underwater Photography (UwP) magazine, appearing in issue 88 (January/February 2016) alongside Phil Rudin and Jussi Hokkanen ([35]).
Charitable Work
Quigley supported the Dive into the Pink breast cancer charity through multiple activities:
- Hosted a Photoshop Intensive workshop at her LA studio (October 12-14, 2018, $595), with all proceeds benefiting Dive into the Pink ([36]).
- Served as judge for the Think Pink 2019 photo competition alongside Adam Hanlon, Kerri Bingham, and Hergen Spalink ([37]).
- GoAskErin gift cards served as prizes for the Share Our Air 2020 contest, which raised over $20,000 for COVID-19 lung function research at Duke Dive Medicine and DAN ([38]).
Digital Shootout Staff
Quigley was a core staff member at The Digital Shootout for many years, teaching Lightroom and post-processing alongside colleagues Berkley White, Sterling Zumbrunn, and Mary Lynn Price:
- 2008 (Bonaire): Competed in the shootout and placed in multiple categories ([39])
- 2010: Listed as seminar leader for the 2011 event alongside Berkley White, Dan Baldocchi, Sterling Zumbrunn, Mary Lynn Price, and Jim Decker. Her website at the time was erinbaby.com ([40])

- DEMA 2018 (Las Vegas): Presented her “favorite dirty editing tricks” on the IRC stage and gave mini-seminars at the Backscatter booth ([48])
Monterey Shootout
Quigley presented “Post Production for Good and Evil” at the 2017 Monterey Shootout, alongside Jim Decker, Matt Ferraro, and Mike Bartick ([49]).
