Overview
Wetpixel Live was a YouTube video series that became the most substantial audio-visual archive of underwater photography knowledge ever assembled. Hosted by Adam Hanlon with regular co-host Alex Mustard, the series produced 302 episodes covering gear reviews, technique masterclasses, competition analysis, conservation topics, and interviews with industry figures — totaling approximately 89 hours of content across nearly three years. Origins: A pandemic pivot
Wetpixel Live was born directly from the COVID-19 pandemic. With international dive travel suspended and the underwater photography community unable to get in the water, the series was “originally conceived by Alex Mustard as a way of staying engaged about underwater image-making when we were prevented from doing so due to COVID-19,” as Hanlon wrote at the 100-episode milestone. ([3])
The first episode — “Top 5 Tips for Starting Out as an Underwater Photographer” — debuted on June 28, 2020. The series launched at an extraordinary pace: 150 episodes in 2020 alone (roughly one per day during the initial lockdown months), slowing to 107 in 2021, 41 in 2022, and 3 in early 2023 as dive travel resumed. The series reached 100 episodes by November 23, 2020 — barely five months after launch. By December 2020, the YouTube channel had over 900 subscribers and 45,500 views across 120 episodes. ([5], [6])
Format
Episodes typically featured Hanlon and Mustard in conversational discussion, with Hanlon posing questions and Mustard providing expert analysis. The average episode ran approximately 18 minutes. Topics were practical and educational — “the meaty issues of underwater photography” as Mustard described it in the first episode. ([7])
A recurring feature was image review: Hanlon and Mustard would critique photographs, discuss what made them successful, and explain the technical choices behind them. Competition review episodes analyzed winning images from UPY, WPotY, Ocean Art, and other major contests.
Paid downloads were introduced alongside free YouTube access in late 2020, though Hanlon stressed that “all current and future episodes will always be available, free of YouTube advertising, and free of charge.” ([8])

Wetpixel Virtual Trade Show (2021–2022)
When DEMA Show was canceled in 2020 and travel restrictions made attendance difficult in 2021, Wetpixel Live hosted a Virtual Trade Show — a series of manufacturer-focused episodes that replicated the booth-visit experience:
- 2021: SAGA (Ep. 214), Easydive (Ep. 215), Inon (Ep. 216), Scubalamp (Ep. 217), Nauticam housings (Ep. 218), Backscatter (Ep. 219), Nauticam accessories (Ep. 220), Nauticam digital cinema (Ep. 221)
- 2022: Aggressor Fleet, Backscatter, Fourth Element, Marelux, Nauticam WACP-C, Seacraft, Shearwater (as “extra” episodes)
These episodes served the same function as Wetpixel’s famous DEMA booth-by-booth coverage (2002–2010), adapted for the pandemic era.
Production arc
The series’ production reflected the pandemic’s trajectory:
- June–December 2020 (150 episodes): Intensive output during full lockdown. Near-daily episodes. Topics skewed toward “what to do when you can’t dive” — gear maintenance, theory, post-processing, image review.
- 2021 (107 episodes): Continued strong output as travel restrictions persisted. Introduction of Virtual Trade Show format. More guest appearances. Topics broadened as some travel resumed (dive planning, location guides, return-from-lockdown advice).
- 2022 (41 episodes): Reduced frequency as dive travel normalized. More DEMA coverage. Competition reviews. The slowdown coincided with the resumption of Wetpixel’s in-person activities.
- 2023 (3 episodes) + farewell (January 2024): Series wound down. Final numbered episode (264) reviewed UPY 2023 winners on March 13, 2023.
End of the series
On January 16, 2024, a 38-second farewell video was posted. Hanlon stated: “Sadly, there aren’t going to be any more episodes of Wetpixel Live coming out, but I do hope the archive remains here online on YouTube for you to get information from and enjoy. There’s a huge amount of information packed in there.” Mustard announced his new solo project: “I have started a new YouTube discussion chat show about underwater photography called The Underwater Photography Show.” ([19])
The end of Wetpixel Live coincided with the broader decline of Wetpixel.com itself — the last article was published in April 2023, and the site entered a period of inactivity amid the financial controversy surrounding Hanlon.
Legacy
Wetpixel Live represented a remarkable pivot: a text-based community that had been declining in forum engagement since the mid-2010s found new life in video format during the pandemic. The series:
- Produced the most comprehensive audio-visual archive of underwater photography education in existence (~89 hours)
- Demonstrated Adam Hanlon and Alex Mustard’s expertise as educators and commentators beyond their written work
- Provided free, expert-level education to a global audience (329,000+ total views)
- Maintained Wetpixel’s relevance during a period when the website and forums were increasingly dormant
- Generated minimal revenue — a community analysis estimated the YouTube channel earned approximately $175/year based on views and subscribers ([20])
- Was independently archived by community member “waterpixel,” who downloaded 294 of 301 videos (65 GB) as a preservation effort ([21])
