Overview
Inon is a Japanese manufacturer of underwater strobes, optical accessories, housings, and lighting products. From its founding through the early 2000s, the company built a reputation for compact, reliable strobes and an innovative ecosystem of wet lenses, fiber optic triggers, and mounting accessories designed to work with OEM compact camera housings.
Inon’s strobes — particularly the Z-240 — became some of the bestselling underwater strobes in history, prized for their compact T-shape twin flash tube design, reliability, and compatibility across both compact and SLR camera systems. The company’s pioneering S-TTL (Slave TTL) technology, which used the camera’s built-in flash as an optical trigger to control external strobe output, was a breakthrough that made automatic flash exposure accessible to compact camera shooters who could not use electrical sync cords ([1]).
Beyond strobes, Inon developed a comprehensive line of wet conversion lenses (fisheye, wide-angle, close-up, and the innovative “insect eye” micro fisheye), LED focus and dive lights, carbon fiber strobe arms, underwater tripod systems, viewfinders for third-party housings, and their own X-2 housing line for Canon and Panasonic cameras.
Key People
Takuya Torii served as Inon’s global product manager and primary international representative. He was described as perpetually circling the globe, attending DEMA Shows, BOOT, ADEX, and dealer events, and conducting workshops from the UK to Southeast Asia ([2]). He appeared at nearly every DEMA Inon booth from 2006 onward ([3], [4]).
Yoshiro Ichikawa was an engineer from Inon Japan who attended DEMA events alongside Torii ([5]).
Mark Rupert founded Inon America in September 2003 and built brand recognition and market share in North, Central, and South America over five years. He was cut out of the business in late 2008 when Inon Inc. and Seanet Inc. (Japan) unilaterally decided to sell directly to his customer base ([6]).
Steve Philbrook was a key figure at Inon America, frequently presenting products alongside Torii at DEMA Shows ([7], [8]).
Inon America
Inon America, Inc. was established in September 2003 in Maple Grove, Minnesota, as the exclusive distributor for North, Central, and South America. Under Mark Rupert’s leadership, the company built the Inon brand in the Americas, running an Artist of the Month program, supporting dealers, and providing warranty service.
In January 2009, Inon America announced the suspension of sales and most business operations. Rupert’s statement revealed that Inon Inc. and Seanet Inc. in Japan had “suddenly and unilaterally decided to sell directly to our customer base, cutting Inon America out of the very business it created.” Since November 2008, both Japanese companies had refused to ship products or repair parts to Inon America. Rupert noted that employees lost their jobs and their families suffered ([9]).
After the collapse of Inon America, distribution shifted to regional dealers. In the UK, Inon UK (Steve Warren and Lisa Collins) became a key distributor, hosting workshops and events with Takuya Torii ([10]).
S-TTL Technology
Inon’s S-TTL (Slave TTL) was a proprietary flash control system that set the company apart from competitors. The technology allowed an external strobe to duplicate the camera’s built-in flash output with high accuracy, enabling automatic exposure control without electrical connections.
The D-2000 (released 2004) was the first strobe purpose-built for S-TTL. Unlike third-party slave TTL adapters that had to amplify and delay flash signals from existing strobes, the D-2000’s flash tube was designed with a flash duration closely matching that of compact camera built-in flashes. As Inon Japan explained in a 2005 technical paper published on Wetpixel, “the flash duration and flash waveform of the D-2000 is very much similar to those of built-in strobe of Canon S-60 or Olympus C5060. This means that the D-2000 can exactly duplicate controlling signal of a camera.” Existing strobes like the Z-220 or Sea & Sea YS-90DX had flash durations approximately five times longer, making accurate slave TTL much harder ([11]).
S-TTL was supported across the Z-240, Z-330, D-2000, D-200, and S-2000 strobe lines, and worked with compact cameras from Canon, Olympus, Nikon, Panasonic, Sony, and Fujifilm housed in OEM housings with Inon fiber optic cable kits ([12]).
Artist of the Month Program
From late 2003, Inon ran an “Artist of the Month” (later “Featured Artist”) program recognizing underwater photographers who used Inon equipment. The program was closely tied to the Wetpixel community:
- November 2003: Wetpixel moderators Craig Jones and Herb Ko selected as the first two Inon Artists of the Month ([13])
- March 2004: Wetpixel member Rand McMeins ([14])
- April 2004: Wetpixel contributor Rod Klein ([15])

Product Lines
Strobes
Inon’s strobes used a distinctive T-shape twin flash tube design (in higher-end models) and were powered by widely available AA batteries. Major models:
- D-180 / D-180S (2002—2003): Early compact strobes introduced via the MCD (Marine Camera Distributors) booth at DEMA 2002. The D-180S was a cost-reduced version with LED focus/target light, officially available from December 15, 2003 ([24], [25])
- Z-220 / Z-220S (2003): Shown at DEMA 2003. Featured focus light and aiming laser on the full Z-220 model. A community member (Dave Patchen) devised a fiber optic hack to enable the Z-220’s focus light on the Olympus C-5050, which otherwise could not trigger it ([26], [27])
- Z-220F (2005): Replacement for the Z-220, shipped from June 2005 ([28])
- D-2000 (2004): Unveiled at DEMA 2004. GN20, 100-degree beam, 4xAA batteries. First Inon strobe purpose-built for S-TTL optical slave triggering. Optical-only (no sync cord port), targeting compact camera users in OEM housings. James Wiseman conducted the first Wetpixel review ([29], [30], [31])
- Z-240 (2006—2017): Inon’s flagship. GN24 (20% more powerful than Z-220), S-TTL, 24-step external auto, 13-step manual, 320 full-power flashes per charge with 2700mAh NiMH batteries. Went through four “Type” revisions: Type 2 improved Nikon fiber optic compatibility; Type 3 replaced xenon modeling light with LED; Type 4 further refinements. Became one of the bestselling underwater strobes in history. Production ceased June 2017 ([32], [33]; community: [34])
- S-2000 (2008—present): Previewed at DEMA 2008. Ultra-compact strobe, GN20, 4xAA batteries, 100m depth rating. Optical sensor approximately 100 times more sensitive than predecessors, eliminating the need for dedicated fiber optic cables in many setups. Alex Mustard praised it as an “excellent tiny macro strobe even on an SLR” but noted the name was confusingly similar to the D-2000 ([35]). Inon later released snoots, ND filters, and color temperature conversion filters for the S-2000 ([36], [37])
- Z-330 (2017—present): Successor to the Z-240. GN33, 110-degree native coverage without diffuser thanks to built-in optically designed dome lens. 220-lumen focus light, “duckbill” rotating beam corrector to prevent light bleed into dome ports, glow-in-the-dark controls, rapid quench time, integrated heat sink. Shipped December 24, 2017. Type 2 (2021) added “fly-eye” dome lens for improved light distribution ([38], [39], [40])
- D-200 (2018—present): Mid-range successor to D-2000. GN20, 110-degree beam, dome lens, dual flash tubes in T-shape, optical-only trigger. Type 2 (2021) added fly-eye dome lens ([41], [42])
The Z-330 was independently tested by Wetpixel alongside the Retra Flash and Symbiosis SS2 in February 2018, with Adam Hanlon conducting comparative field tests in Marsa Alam, Egypt ([43]). Retra also announced LSD snoot support for the Z-330, demonstrating third-party accessory compatibility ([44]).
Strobe Accessories
Inon developed an extensive accessory ecosystem for their strobes:
- Diffusers: Available in -0.5, -1.5, and -3 stop versions with snap-in color filter inserts for correcting focus light color temperature ([45])
- Color temperature conversion filters (2012): Reduced strobe color temperature from 5600K to 4900K or 4600K for richer blues in wide-angle images, championed by Alex Mustard ([46])
- E.V. dial labels (2013): After years of complaints about the confusing power markings on Z-240 and D-2000 strobes, Inon released luminous replacement decals with graduated half-power increments ([47])
- Snoot sets: For S-2000 (2010), Z-330/D-200 (2019) ([48], [49])
- Warming diffusers for Z-330 (2018) ([50])
- ND filters for S-2000 (2018) ([51])
Wet Lenses
Inon produced a comprehensive range of wet-mount conversion lenses using proprietary bayonet (AD, LD) and standard M67/M52 thread mounts:
- UFL-165AD (2004): Fisheye conversion lens with 165-degree field of view. Compact design with close focus to the front edge of the dome ([52])

- UWL-95S (2022): Updated wide conversion lens with switchable M52/M67/XD mount system ([58])
- UW Variable Red Filter M67 (2017): Innovative variable-strength color correction filter using two rotating circular polarizers ([59])
Insect Eye / Bug Eye Lens
The UFL-MR130 EFS60 Underwater Micro Semi-Fisheye Relay Lens was one of Inon’s most innovative and unusual products. First shown as a prototype “insect eye” endoscope port at DEMA 2008, it was a long, thin port with a 130-degree fisheye lens designed for the Canon 60mm EF-S macro lens, producing striking wide-angle macro images with near-infinite depth of field ([60]).
Photographer Douglas Seifert used the insect eye (which he called the “WAM” — wide-angle macro) to land what was possibly the first cover image taken with the lens, on DIVE Magazine’s November 2010 issue. Alex Mustard commented that while the image was excellent, the lens quality at magazine resolution was “very poor” — suggesting the lens was creative but optically limited ([61]). Wetpixel member Jordi Chias had the lens adapted to work with Nikon by Saga Dive’s Jose Sanchez ([62]).
In 2011, Inon released the UFL-M150 ZM80 compact version for compact cameras, offering 150-degree fisheye imaging with a minimum focus distance of 0cm ([63]).
GoPro Accessory System
From 2014, Inon developed a dedicated accessory ecosystem for GoPro action cameras, addressing their underwater limitations (poor close focus and extreme wide angle). The system included:
- SD Cage Mount system for HERO3/3+/4 with dedicated UFL-G140 SD semi-fisheye and UCL-G165 SD wide close-up lenses ([64])
- SD Front Mask STD (2016) for standard GoPro housings ([65])
- SD Front Mask for HERO5 (2017) for the Super Suits dive housing ([66])
- Color Filter Sets for GoPro (2016, 2017) with pink, orange, and red filters for green, shallow, and deep water ([67], [68])
- Compatibility confirmed through HERO11 (2022) ([69])
Wetpixel editor Adam Hanlon published a field review praising the system’s ability to transform the GoPro’s limited close-focus ability ([70]).
LED Lights
Inon’s LF (LED Flashlight) and LE (LED) series progressed through multiple generations, all using AA batteries:
- LE-700-S (2012): 700 lumens, 30-degree beam, 3xAA, 110 min burn time, with filter set ([71])
- LE350 (2012): 350-lumen compact focus light with red filter ([72])

X-2 Housings
Inon produced their own line of underwater housings under the X-2 brand, constructed from cast aluminum (later models) or aluminum alloy and reinforced plastic (early models). Unlike machined housings from competitors, Inon’s casting technique allowed curved shapes and weight optimization.
- X-2 for Canon 10D (2004): First X-2 housing announced, aluminum and reinforced plastic ([80], [81])
- X-2 for Canon 10D/20D/30D (2006): Shown at DEMA 2006 with external gearing, magnetic focus ring, 45-degree viewfinder, optical strobe sync, 67mm macro port thread, 550g negative buoyancy. Limited production, build-to-order ([82], [83])
- X-2 for Panasonic GF1 (2010): Compact micro four thirds housing with almost every camera control accessible, fiber optic sync, support for 8mm fisheye, 20mm pancake, 45mm macro, 14-45mm and 7-14mm zoom lenses ([84], [85])

OEM Housing Accessories
A core part of Inon’s business was providing accessories — mount bases, lens adapters, fiber optic cable kits, and grip systems — for OEM compact camera housings from Canon, Olympus, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Panasonic. This transformed basic OEM housings into capable underwater photography systems.
Compatibility support covered dozens of housing models including Canon WP-DC series, Olympus PT series, Nikon WP-CP series, Sony MPK series, and Fujifilm WP series. The company regularly published detailed compatibility notices for new camera/housing combinations ([106], [107], [108], [109], [110], [111]).
Other Innovations
- Clear Photo System (2004): Patented technology using infrared-transparent film over the camera’s built-in flash to reduce backscatter while still triggering optical slave strobes. The patent covered what was essentially unexposed, developed slide film ([112])
- Optical D Cable system: Fiber optic cables with dedicated mounting fixtures (bush sets) for specific housing models, enabling reliable S-TTL triggering
- Color temperature guide (2013): Published free PDF/iBook guide to using diffusers for color temperature adjustment, complementing Alex Mustard’s advocacy of balanced lighting ([113])
Community Discussion
The Inon Z-240 was one of the most discussed strobes on the Wetpixel forums, frequently compared with the Ikelite DS-161 and Sea & Sea YS-D1. Discussions often centered on the Z-240’s compact size and light weight versus competitors’ higher power output. Freedive photographers particularly valued the Z-240’s portability ([114], [115], [116]).
The confusing strobe naming and “Type” revision system was a recurring community frustration, with users struggling to understand the differences between Type 1 through Type 4 ([117]). This was compounded by the notoriously confusing E.V. dial markings, which Inon finally addressed with replacement decals in 2013.
