Biography
Drew Wong is an underwater videographer and one of Wetpixel’s most prolific contributors, serving as the site’s primary authority on underwater video from the standard-definition era through HD, ViDSLR, cinema cameras, and mirrorless systems. Eric Cheng referred to him as Wetpixel’s “video guru” in a 2007 article about the sardine run ([1]). Based in Singapore, Wong was active on the Wetpixel forums from November 2002 through 2022, with peak activity between 2005 and 2018.
Wong is a self-described “Warm Water Wimp” who wears 5mm suits in 20—25C water and has less than 9.5% body fat, as he disclosed in his 2007 Radiator wetsuit review ([2]). He is approximately 5’11” and has shoe size 11. His first dive show was ADEX Singapore in approximately 1994 --- seventeen years before he began formally covering ADEX for Wetpixel ([3]). Beyond underwater imaging, he organized liveaboard trips to unexplored areas of the Indonesian archipelago, working with Conservation International scientists Mark Erdmann and Gerald Allen to plan expeditions to places like Raja Ampat and Cenderawasih ([4]).
With 10,071 forum posts, 90 authored articles, and 19 comments, Wong had an activity score of 12,917 in the Wetpixel community --- one of the highest of any contributor. His coverage spanned video gear reviews, trade show reports, conservation advocacy, camera announcements, technique guides, and community columns.
Contributions
Wong wrote 5 guest articles for Wetpixel covering ADEX show reports (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019) and a carbon fiber arms column, published through Adam Hanlon’s editor account.
Video Housing Reviews
Wong wrote the most comprehensive and technically detailed video housing reviews on Wetpixel. His reviews were distinctive for including manufacturer rebuttals in italics, giving readers both the reviewer’s findings and the manufacturer’s perspective:
- Amphibico Endeavor + Sony HVR-V1U (2007) --- A multi-page review of the prototype (#01) housing, tested during the sardine run in South Africa. Covered the housing overview, camera settings, field test, and reviewer observations, plus a separate review of the HVR-DR60 hard drive recorder. Included Amphibico CEO Joe Bendahan’s responses ([5]).
- Gates FX7/V1 housing (2007) --- Reviewed during a 17-day Banda Sea voyage and 11-day Wakatobi reef monitoring trip. Included responses from Gates CEO John Ellerbrock. Tested the EM43 external monitor and Gates tripod. Wong praised the engineering of the Push/SEL knob while noting usability issues ([6]).
- Mangrove MVD L-2 (2008) --- Housing by Spanish manufacturer Aditech (founded by Juan Sentis), tested during the Wetpixel staff trip in the Philippines. Notable for testing the electronic white balance feature, which worked across multiple Sony camera models ([7]).
- Canon 5D Mark II housing shootout (2010) --- Comparative review of Sea & Sea MDX-Pro (with Zen 8” glass port, arranged by Ryan Canon of Reef Photo & Video), Aquatica A5D Mark II, and Seacam housings. Used Inon Z240 strobes for macro, Hartenberger 250TTL strobes for wide angle, and dual Hartenberger HLX halogen lights corrected to 4300K for video. Alex Mustard supplied Magic Filter for the 16-35mm II lens tests ([8]).
- Seacam Prelude 60D (2011) --- Full review of Seacam’s entry-level housing line, tested in South Africa (sardine run) and Indonesia. Challenged by Seacam owner Harald Hordosch to evaluate the “Less is More” design philosophy. Tested with S10 Sportsfinder viewfinder, multiple Canon and Sigma/Tokina lenses ([9]).
- Nauticam NA-60D (2011) --- Back-to-back field test with the Seacam Prelude 60D, providing direct comparison ([10]).
- Seacam SeaFlash 150 Digital strobe (2012) --- Separate review spun off from the Prelude 60D review, covering the 150W strobe with removable batteries, 180-lumen LED spotlight, and Canon ETTL II compatibility. Equipment loaned by Harald Hordosch; logistics support from David Cheung of ScubaCam Singapore ([11]).
The “ViDSLR” Coinage
In May 2009, Wong coined the term “ViDSLR” --- Video + DSLR --- in his article on the Panasonic DMC-GH1, writing: “it is a feature packed camera that beats the competitors for HD video in DSLR, ViDSLR if you will” ([12]). The term became his signature shorthand for hybrid cameras during the DSLR Video Revolution and appeared in his subsequent articles, including the Canon 5D Mark II housing shootout (“HD ViDSLR hybrid cameras”), the Seacam Prelude 60D review (“ViDSLRs”), and his promotion of the Can-Do Short Film Competition (“Canon ViDSLR”) ([13]).
DEMA and Trade Show Coverage
Wong served as Wetpixel’s video products correspondent at multiple trade shows:
- DEMA 2005: First major article --- a floor report on Sony HDV housings from Sea & Sea, Amphibico, Gates, and Light & Motion. Gave Amphibico “the most innovative award” for their prism LCD viewfinder ([14]).
- DEMA 2006: Wrote a comprehensive video products preview covering new housings from Amphibico, Gates, Light & Motion, and Sea & Sea before the show ([15]). Also reported on the Gates video tripod from the show floor ([16]).
- DVExpo West 2006: Official Wetpixel coverage of the video production trade show. Provided detailed technical analysis of new Canon XH A1/G1, Panasonic HVX200, Sony HVR-V1, and the then-mysterious RED 4K camera. Attended the RED preview at Nuart Theater, noting “I have to admit the demo clips were very impressive on the big screen (although I ask, how can they shoot without a real prototype?)” ([17]).
- CES coverage: Reported on new HD camcorders from Sony, JVC, Canon, and Panasonic at CES 2007 and CES 2010 ([18], [19]).
ADEX Coverage (2007—2019)
Wong was Wetpixel’s primary ADEX reporter for over a decade, co-hosting the annual Sam’s Tours/Wetpixel/ScubaCam party with David Cheung of ScubaCam Singapore. His ADEX coverage constitutes one of the most complete records of Asian underwater imaging industry trends:
- ADEX 2007 Bangkok: First ADEX report, organized the first Wetpixel ADEX party ([20]).
- ADEX 2011 Singapore: Reported on 3D camera rigs by David Cheung, talks by Shawn Heinrichs and Todd Essick, and noted “17 years ago, my very first dive show in Asia was ADEX Singapore” ([21]).
- ADEX 2012 Singapore: Covered the show’s move to Marina Bay Sands Convention Center. Reported on Shawn Heinrichs’s manta conservation presentation (despite skiing injuries), Stephen Frink’s first-ever ADEX appearance, and David Doubilet as speaker ([22]).
- ADEX 2013 Singapore: Detailed technical coverage of Gates F55 cinema housing prototype ($18,000 MSRP), Amphibico Rouge housing for RED cameras ($12,999), Nauticam Rossa, and Amphibico Genesis FS700. Showed deep knowledge of cinema camera workflows and housing engineering ([23]).
- ADEX 2016 Singapore: Reported on Gates C300 Mk II housing, Aquatica A7rII, and praised Gates’ “don’t fix what isn’t broken” philosophy for professional reliability. Noted 58,000 visitors ([24]).
- ADEX 2017 Singapore: Covered Aquatica’s first ADEX showing, EasyDive’s universal housing concept from Italy, Subal’s return after multi-year absence. Noted smartphone housings as “the hottest item at ADEX.” Confirmed Eric Cheng’s role at Facebook VR. 60,000+ visitors ([25]).
- ADEX 2018 Singapore: Investigated “Eneloopgate” by interviewing Seacam’s Harald Hordosch and Inon’s Takuya Tori about battery safety. Covered Doug Perrine’s first ADEX appearance. 62,079 visitors ([26]).
- ADEX 2019 Singapore: Final ADEX report. Highlighted the Tham Luang cave rescue panel discussion, Photo/Video Future Forward panel with Stephen Frink and VR specialist Claudia Schmitt. Covered Inon X2 housing and prototype vacuum seal system. 25th anniversary of ADEX ([27]).
Sardine Run Expeditions (2006—2011)
Wong organized and led annual “Wetpixel Ocean Safari” sardine run trips to South Africa’s Eastern Cape, field-testing video gear along the way. Eric Cheng participated in the 2006 trip:
- 2006: First sardine run trip. Wong reportedly wore a Spiderman wetsuit and scared away a humpback whale, an anecdote Cheng recounted in 2007 ([28]). A photo gallery competition followed in August 2006 ([29]).
- 2007: Led the group while also testing the Amphibico Endeavor prototype housing and conducting the Didier Noirot interview in South Africa ([30]).
- 2010: Filed a detailed report expressing concerns about the proliferation of inexperienced operators and noting at least 3 shark-related diver injuries during sardine runs over the years. Wong “claims the dubious honor of being the first diver to have been mistaken as a sardine by a diving gannet” ([31]).
- 2011: Used the trip to field-test the Seacam Prelude 60D and SeaFlash 150 strobes ([32]).
Didier Noirot Interview
In 2007, Wong conducted a multi-page interview with Didier Noirot, legendary underwater cinematographer who worked with Jacques Cousteau from 1988 until Cousteau’s death in 1997, and later with the BBC. The interview was conducted across two locations: San Diego and South Africa (during the sardine run) ([33]).
Cinema Camera Coverage
Wong closely tracked the development of cinema cameras for underwater use:
- RED: Attended the RED camera preview at DVExpo West 2006, expressing skepticism but acknowledging impressive demo clips. Attended the RED Epic prototype demo in Singapore in November 2010, providing detailed technical analysis of the Mysterium-X sensor, HDRx high dynamic range processing, and the DSMC (Digital Stills and Motion Camera) concept. Noted the Epic’s touch screen autofocus was “neither fast or accurate at the moment” ([34]). Started and moderated the 173-reply Red Scarlet-X forum thread, attending the unveiling event in person ([35], [36]).
- Canon Cinema EOS: Covered Canon’s Paramount Studios announcement of the Cinema EOS line including the C300 and a 4K DSLR prototype ([37]).
