Overview
Gates Underwater Products is the dominant manufacturer of professional underwater cinema and video housings. Founded in 1969 by Elwyn Gates in his garage in San Diego, the company began with the Nikonos Extension Tube kit, which sold over 100,000 units before being phased out in 2003 ([1]). The company was sold to John and Karen Ellerbrock in 2002 ([2]).
Gates housings are distinguished by their “bulletproof” machined aluminum construction, 100% mechanical controls (no electronics), and 2-year renewable warranties. The company’s philosophy of fully manual, mechanical controls gives users a housing design with no electronic failure points, making them reliable in the most demanding professional environments ([3]). Their depth ratings range from 250 to 450 feet depending on the housing model.
The company became the industry standard for professional underwater cinema, with Gates housings used on major productions including BBC’s Blue Planet II (2017), where the RED Dragon in a Gates housing was the primary camera system. Dan Beecham, a key camera operator on the series, described the RED Dragon as “the go-to camera for the series” and noted it was “used on the majority of the big natural history productions” ([4]).
Gates operates a factory-direct model from their facility in Poway, California, where all design, manufacture, assembly, testing, and servicing is performed in-house ([5]). The company relocated from San Diego to Poway in August 2008 ([6]).
Design Philosophy
Gates housings share several signature characteristics across their product line:
- All-mechanical controls: Every control is purely mechanical with no electronics, reducing failure risk. As Eric Cheng noted, “Gates housings are fully manual, giving an option to users who prefer no electronics in their housings” ([7]).
- Machined aluminum construction: All housings are machined from solid blocks of marine-grade anodized aluminum with stainless steel hardware ([8]).
- Precision Ports: Gates developed their own line of optical ports — domes, flat ports, and super-wide ports — designed to maintain image quality at 4K, 6K, and 8K resolutions ([9]).
- Lens Gear Drive system: A unique gear system that maps focus, iris, and zoom controls to housing knobs regardless of which lens is installed, supporting over 70 (later 80+) PL mount, DSLR, and cine lenses ([10]).
- Seal Check vacuum system: Gates pioneered the commercial adoption of vacuum leak-testing for underwater housings. John Ellerbrock traced the concept back to Lamar Boren and Jordy Klein Sr. in the 1960s, through Al Giddings in the 1980s and the IMAX Mark II housings of Bob Cranston and Howard Hall in the 1990s. Gates commercialized it as “Seal Check” and later “Seal Check II,” making it a standard feature on all Gates housings ([11], [12]).
- Adjustable buoyancy/trim: Slide-in trim weight systems allow fine-tuning of balance underwater, which Howard Hall praised as “great being able to adjust the weights underwater” ([13]).
Collaboration with Howard Hall
One of the most significant relationships in Gates’ history is the collaboration with filmmaker Howard Hall. When Gates announced the DEEP RED housing in 2007, it was explicitly developed “with the collaborative support of Howard Hall, a 30 year veteran of underwater imaging successes in TV, feature film and IMAX productions” ([14]).
Hall provided the design specifications for the DEEP RED, requesting a three-section housing design, fingertip-accessible controls for all critical functions, full menu access, support for a wide variety of lenses from DSLR to Ultra Primes, depth rating to 450 feet, and minimal size and weight. He later wrote a detailed review calling the DEEP RED “probably the most versatile underwater system I have ever owned” and praising three “absolutely brilliant” innovations: a multi-axis joystick control for menu navigation, the universal lens gear system, and magnetic repulsion buttons on the monitor housing ([15]).
Hall had been using Gates’ vacuum seal check system for “more than ten years” by 2009, noting he “haven’t water damaged a camera since I implemented the system” ([16]). Earlier, in 2004, Gates partnered with Hall to develop a Sony HD camera housing ([17]). Hall and Bob Cranston also collaborated on the Deep Pulsar/Deep Atom 3D beam splitter housing in 2011 ([18]).
Product Lines
Consumer/Prosumer Video Housings (2002—2019)
Gates maintained a broad line of housings for consumer and prosumer video cameras throughout the 2000s and 2010s, primarily for Sony and Canon camcorders. These housings featured the same mechanical-only approach as their cinema products but at lower price points.
Sony camcorder housings:
- F707 housing (2002): Gates’ first digital still camera housing, for the Sony F707 5-megapixel camera. Featured access to all key camera functions including manual focus, white balance, and full exposure control ([19]).

RED Cinema Housings (2007—present)
The RED housing line represents Gates’ most significant contribution to underwater filmmaking, making 4K and higher resolution digital cinema accessible underwater for the first time.
- DEEP RED (2007—2009): Announced October 2007 for the RED ONE camera, developed in collaboration with Howard Hall. The announcement called it “a watershed in underwater imaging, providing the means to capture 4K resolution (or 4 x HD resolution) motion imaging, suitable for digital cinema.” Featured a 450-foot depth rating, 2-year renewable warranty, and partnership with Fathom Imaging for optics. Prototyped at DEMA 2008, first shipped in 2009. Priced in the range of $15,000—$20,000 ([47], [48], [49], [50]).
- DEEP EPIC (2011): For the RED EPIC camera. 25% smaller than DEEP RED, with integrated REDMOTE for complete camera control. Priced under $20,000 including external monitor shell, Seal Check, REDMOTE support, and travel case. Available late summer 2011 ([51]).
- DEEP SCARLET (2012): For the RED SCARLET 4K camera. Included pivoting RED PRO external monitor case and Seal Check. Priced under $15,000 with SP80 port and extension ([52]).

Included new integrated tripod legs, shade extension, and light bar. Supported over 70 PL mount lenses. Priced at $18,280, shipping immediately from December 2013 ([53]).
- DEEP WEAPON upgrade (2015): Rather than requiring customers to buy entirely new housings, Gates offered an upgrade path for DEEP EPIC and DEEP DRAGON owners. Once upgraded, the housing was backward compatible with all EPIC models including Scarlet, EPIC, DRAGON, WEAPON, and RAVEN. Gates philosophy was “Obsolescence Obsolete” — protecting the customer’s investment ([54]).
- Nikonos RS Adapter Kit (2014): A $5,625 adapter allowing Nikonos RS lenses (13mm fisheye, 28mm, 50mm macro, 20-35mm zoom) to be used with DEEP EPIC and DEEP DRAGON housings. Johnny Friday, award-winning underwater cinematographer, called it “an ingenious adaptation” ([55]). In 2016, John Ellerbrock published detailed testing of Nikonos RS lens compatibility with RED’s 8K Vista Vision sensor, finding the 28mm and 50mm covered 8K full frame while the 13mm fisheye was limited to FF35 coverage ([56]).
- Pro Action (2016): Compact “run and gun” housing for underwater action footage. Multi-camera compatible with RED DSMC1, DSMC2, and ARRI ALEXA Mini. Featured integrated pivoting ST5 rear monitor. Revealed at the Wildscreen Festival in Bristol, available Q1 2017 ([57]).
- Pro Explore (2017): Dedicated housing for the RED DSMC2 platform with 8K imaging capability. - Laowa Probe Lens Adapter (MLA60) (2019): Adapter kit allowing use of the Laowa 24mm Macro Probe lens with Pro Explore and Pro Action housings. Developed in collaboration with Venus Optics. The sealed lens barrel extended 7 inches from the housing, creating a “Goby Eye” perspective for underwater macro cinematography ([67]).
