Red Sea
Region: Egypt (primarily), Israel (Eilat), Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Eritrea
Type: Tropical sea; coral reefs, wrecks, pelagics, muck diving
Significance: The most frequently referenced diving destination in the Wetpixel archive; Alex Mustard’s primary camera review location; the most accessible warm-water destination for European underwater photographers
First Wetpixel coverage: 2003
Overview
The Red Sea is one of the most frequently referenced destinations in the entire Wetpixel archive, appearing in 165+ articles and 1,000+ forum threads. Its importance for underwater photography stems from exceptional water clarity, warm year-round temperatures, diverse subjects — coral reefs, large pelagics, world-class WWII wrecks — and accessibility from Europe. As Adam Hanlon noted: “We are lucky in the UK that the Red Sea is so close,” describing the five-hour flight from Manchester to Hurghada ([1]).
The Red Sea’s coral reefs live in hyper-warm, saline waters that may provide critical insights for global coral survival. An OceanX documentary shown at the 2020 G20 Summit in Riyadh, shot with a RED Digital Cinema Komodo in a Gates housing, highlighted this resilience: “After 400 million years and several mass extinctions, coral reefs around the world are set to disappear in a matter of decades. But the coral reefs in the Red Sea live in hyper-warm and saline waters that are similar to what the rest of our oceans could look like in just a few decades” ([2]).
Joe Daniels, writing in 2019, summarized the region’s photographic appeal: “From pristine coral gardens, electric dolphin encounters, ethereal caverns, and incredible shark encounters, the Red Sea has it all for any diver or photographer” ([3]).
Key Dive Sites
Northern Red Sea (Sinai Peninsula)
-
Sharm el-Sheikh / Ras Mohammed — The major resort hub on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. Ras Mohammed National Park is famous for schooling fish aggregations in May and June, making it the timing target for Wetpixel expeditions. The site of Alex Mustard workshops and multiple camera reviews ([4]).
-
Nuweiba — A port town in the Gulf of Aqaba, 55 miles south of Taba. Adam Hanlon published a detailed trip report revealing it as an unexpected macro photography destination — “Red Sea muck diving.” The house reef Abou Lou Lou, accessed via shore entry, offers repeated dives on the same site with resident frogfish, ghost pipefish, seahorses, mimic octopus, and mantis shrimp. Emperor Divers operates the dive center at the Hilton Nuweiba Coral resort, with guides Tarkan and Kathrin providing “shopping list” dives — a rarity in the boat-diving-dominated Red Sea ([5]).
-
Abu Nuhas — A reef in the Strait of Gubal known for multiple shipwrecks, featured on Digideep’s inaugural Red Sea photo safari in 2003 ([6]).
-
Gubal Island — At the mouth of the Gulf of Suez. In 2013, forum member “Glasseye Snapper” (Bart) discovered an unknown fish species in a shallow lagoon at Marsa Shagra. Mustard independently found a second specimen in a similar habitat at Gubal Island. The fish, tentatively called the “rhinoceros blenny” for its single horn-like cirrus, was studied by blenny expert Ben Victor and ichthyologists Jack Randall and Sergey Bogorodsky. It was eventually described as Cerogobius petrophilus — a new genus of goby (family Gobiidae, despite the “blenny” common name) — published in 2019 ([7] — forum).
Southern Red Sea (Egypt Mainland)
-
Hurghada — The longest-established Red Sea resort town, gateway to southern diving. Site of 3D underwater filming: Helmut Goerlitz shot “The Art of Diving 3D” Blu-ray here using dual Panasonic Z10000 cameras ([8]).
-
Port Ghalib / Marsa Alam — Southern Red Sea base for Emperor Divers and departure point for deep south liveaboards. Hanlon used Port Ghalib as the base for his 2018 strobe comparison testing ([9]). Marsa Shagra, near Marsa Alam, is where the rhinoceros blenny was first discovered in less than 2 meters of water ([10] — forum).
-
Elphinstone Reef / Brothers Islands / Daedalus — Deep south liveaboard destinations known for oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus) encounters. Egypt’s Red Sea offers a “fairly unique opportunity to photograph oceanic whitetip sharks without bait,” as discussed by Mustard and Hanlon on Wetpixel Live ([11]). Joe Daniels documented a whitetip being strangled by a plastic regulator holder during an October 2019 trip with Mustard ([12]).
-
Fury Shoal — Known for a resident population of spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris), documented by Joe Daniels playing in the shallows and feeding on moon jellyfish ([13]).
-
St. Johns Reef — Features stunning caverns with dramatic light shows on calm, clear days. The southern Red Sea reefs “often have stunning caverns running through them” ([14]).
-
Mangrove Bay — A bay with a single resort, studied by a University of Tubingen professor since 2003. In September 2023, forum member “Architeuthis” (Wolfgang) documented anemone bleaching at 29-30°C water temperatures — every anemone bleached while corals remained intact. Neither the dive base owner (present since the 1980s) nor the long-term researcher had ever observed bleached anemones previously. A seagrass meadow in the shallow water also disappeared, though researchers said the seagrass undergoes regular cycles. At Fury Shoals/St. Johns during the same period, water temperatures reached 32°C at depth, though corals appeared to be surviving ([15] — forum).
Israel
- Eilat — At the northernmost tip of the Gulf of Aqaba. Home to patchy reefs, wrecks, and macro diving. Host of the annual Red Sea Shoot-Out photography competition (2005 onward) and the Red Sea Diving Festival (2020). Dive sites include the Satil wreck (used for the Silence of the Sharks protest dive) and the Storm wreck ([16]).
SS Thistlegorm
The WWII British military transport ship SS Thistlegorm is “probably the most dived and photographed wreck in the Red Sea, if not the world.” Sunk by German bombers, discovered by Jacques-Yves Cousteau in the early 1950s (who reputedly salvaged her bell), then lost again until rediscovery in the early 1990s. Her holds contain BSA M20 motorbikes, Bedford trucks, Foden trucks, and other WWII military cargo, now colonized by bigeyes (Priancanthus blochii) and Red Sea soldierfish (Myripristis murdjan) ([17]).
Nadya Kulagina produced a celebrated portfolio of Thistlegorm interiors using off-camera strobes to backlight motorbikes and reveal truck cabin details ([18]). Alex Mustard published a Thistlegorm guidebook with cutting-edge 3D and photogrammetry imagery to document the location of historical artifacts, discussed on Wetpixel Live ([19]). Mustard’s Thistlegorm BSA motorbike image, shot with backlit off-camera flash, became one of the signature images in his Underwater Photography Masterclass book ([20]).
Camera & Gear Reviews Shot in the Red Sea
Alex Mustard established a pattern of using the Red Sea as his primary camera and gear review location, returning to familiar subjects and conditions for consistent comparisons. In his D750 review: “There was a definite sense of deja-vu as I plunged into the warm November waters of the Red Sea for this camera review. It is not the first time Nikon’s autumnal camera releases have been met by a swift response from housing manufacturers and I’ve come here to be the first to put them through their paces underwater” ([21]).

Competitions
Eilat Red Sea Shoot-Out (2005–2020)
The underwater photography competition in Eilat ran under various sponsors for over a decade, evolving through several eras:
-
SanDisk era (2005–2007): The “SanDisk Red Sea Underwater Photo Competition” was organized by David Pilosof, with backing from the Israeli diving magazine Yam, the Israeli Ministry of Tourism, and the Red Sea Resort Tourism Administration. The 2006 edition offered a $10,000 cash first prize plus a three-week diving trip to Papua New Guinea ($15,000 value), held at the Isrotel Ambassador Hotel. Events included a Dolphin Reef shoot-out party and Antibes Film Festival screenings. Winner Noam Kortler “left in absolute shock” ([32], [33]).
-
Epson era (2010–2011): Rebranded as the “Epson Red Sea” competition. Added a “World Shoot-Out” category where photographers worldwide could enter images taken during a designated week, submitted via internet upload. Categories included linked-theme portfolios, shark images, wrecks, and environmental images. A 210-page album of all 2010 nominees and winners was compiled by Pilosof and released as a free download ([34], [35], [36], [37]).
-
HP era (2012–2014): Rebranded again as the “HP Red Sea” competition. The eighth year (2012) introduced a “National Team” category — teams of three photographers from the same country — billed as the “International Underwater Photography Olympics.” Judging used a “Eurovision”-style vote-off with teams voting for other teams’ images. The 2012 edition attracted 67 participants from nine countries; Amir Stern of Israel won Best of Show, and Spain won the National Team prize. In 2013, the National Team category judging took place at the Festival Mondial de l’Image Sous Marine in Marseille, combining public online votes (15%), festival visitor votes (15%), and jury panel (70%) ([38], [39], [40], [41]).
-
2014 tenth anniversary: The competition’s tenth edition attracted participants from nine countries. Eyal Cohen (Israel) won the portfolio category and $10,000. The event included an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the largest live-streamed underwater event, with 200 divers on the Storm wreck. Christian Patron (photographer of Titanic and The Big Blue) led the photography crew. A panoramic image was shot by Nicolas Baraka using Sony smartphones as additional cameras for the live broadcast ([42]).
Red Sea Diving Festival (2020)
By 2020, the competition evolved into the “Red Sea Diving Festival,” organized by photographers Boaz Samorai and Noam Kortler with sponsorship from the Israeli Ministry of Tourism. Held March 11-14, it featured an underwater photography gallery — images printed on slightly buoyant acrylic, suspended from monofilament fishing lines on weights, creating the appearance of hovering in mid-water on a shallow coral bommie. Events included diving workshops (freediving, technical diving, underwater photography), film screenings, a beach cleanup, and an underwater cleaning dive. Adam Hanlon attended and presented. An underwater artist, Geir Borresen, even painted in oils during the event. It was one of the last in-person dive events before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down international travel ([43], [44]).
Early Red Sea Competitions
The first Wetpixel-covered Red Sea competition was Digideep’s 2003 “Digital Shoot-Out,” a liveaboard photo safari departing Sharm el-Sheikh for Abu Nuhas wrecks, Thistlegorm, and Ras Mohammed, priced at 735 EUR with unlimited diving and tutorials on digital underwater photography — organized by Lars Kirchhoff and Andreas Voeltz ([45]).
Wetpixel Expeditions
Wetpixel organized Red Sea photography trips on the VIP ONE liveaboard, timed for the May-June Ras Mohammed fish aggregations:
-
2022: Two trips (May 22-29 and May 29-June 5) described as “photographically productive exploration of the Red Sea’s amazing reefs” ([46], [47]).
-
2023: Two trips planned (September 3-10 and September 10-17) on VIP ONE. These were effectively cancelled when Adam Hanlon failed to make payments to the vessel operator Alain Sobol. Forum member “Architeuthis” (Wolfgang), who had booked and paid in installments since August 2022, discovered the trips were missing from the VIP ONE website in June 2023. Sobol confirmed he had received no payment or communication from Hanlon since April 2023. By August 2023, at least four booked participants (Patricia, Sandra, Elisabeth, and Wolfgang) were left stranded with booked flights and no trip. Hanlon had “practically went underground since April 2023.” The Red Sea cancellation was connected to broader Wetpixel financial issues including an earlier Lembeh trip where Alex Mustard volunteered to stand in for Hanlon, with refunds still unsettled ([48], [49] — forum).
Workshops and Photography Trips
The Red Sea became a hub for underwater photography education:
-
Alex Mustard workshops: Mustard ran regular workshops from the Red Sea, including his annual autumn trips where new camera gear was tested. His 2014 workshop featured underwater model Katrin Felton for fashion photography sessions with backlighting techniques ([50]). Joe Daniels joined a Mustard workshop in October 2019 focused on photographing oceanic whitetips, describing the encounters as “incredible” ([51]).
-
Digideep photo safaris: The German underwater photography group Digideep, run by Lars Kirchhoff and Andreas Voeltz, organized multiple Red Sea events beginning with their 2003 liveaboard safari, offering free tutorials on digital image manipulation and equipment testing ([52], [53]).
-
Emperor Divers: Based at multiple Red Sea locations including Port Ghalib and Nuweiba, Emperor Divers provided dive support for numerous Wetpixel reviews and workshops. Their Port Ghalib operation offered boat diving from vessels moored “about 30 meters from the hotel’s main restaurant” ([54]). At Nuweiba, they offered unguided shore diving on the house reef after an orientation dive ([55]).
Notable Firsts
-
2009: First underwater Canon 5D Mark II video shot in the Egyptian Red Sea by Wetpixel member Fergus Kennedy (“Ferg42”). He used an Ikelite housing (converted from the original 5D), a 15mm fisheye lens, natural light with a Magic Filter, and described the conversion in the DIY section of the Wetpixel forums ([56]).
-
2011: Israeli underwater photographer Sharon Rainis conducted a three-day underwater fashion shoot in the Red Sea featuring nearly $50,000 (30,000 GBP) worth of designer wedding gowns, with a crew of 15 including models, photographers, videographers, safety divers, and lighting assistants ([57]).
-
2012: Helmut Goerlitz released “The Art of Diving 3D,” a 49-minute Blu-ray of 3D underwater footage shot in Hurghada with dual Panasonic Z10000 cameras ([58]).
-
2013: Discovery of the rhinoceros blenny, later described as the new genus Cerogobius petrophilus in 2019, from shallow Red Sea waters ([59] — forum).
Political & Safety Events
-
2010 Jan: Dry dock fire in Suez destroyed or damaged several dive boats including VIP-One, Aquators Hyatt, Tornado Marine Fleet’s Typhoon, and MY Sweet Dream. Dive operators accommodated booked passengers onto alternative liveaboards ([60]).
-
2010 Dec: Three oceanic whitetip shark attacks near Sharm el-Sheikh — three Russian tourists attacked while snorkeling on reefs north of Naama Bay within 24 hours. The Egyptian Chamber of Diving and Water Sports (CDWS) imposed a two-day ban on all diving and water sports across the Sharm el-Sheikh coast, except Ras Mohammed National Park. The South Sinai National Park’s head marine biologist Mohammed Salem led efforts to capture and relocate the shark. Richard Peirce, chairman of the UK Shark Trust, noted only nine attacks by oceanic whitetips had been recorded since records began, calling the behavior “extremely unusual” and likely triggered by illegal fishing or feeding. A subsequent fatal attack on a German tourist followed days later ([61]).
-
2011 Jan: Egyptian revolution protests reached Sharm el-Sheikh, with barricades erected in front of resort hotels. President Mubarak may have been at his summer dwelling in the area. The UK FCO advised Britons in Cairo, Alexandria, and Suez to leave but excluded Red Sea resort areas. Wetpixel noted “many Wetpixel members live and work in Egypt” ([62]).
-
2013 Jul: Egypt travel warnings issued during political instability. Both the UK FCO and US State Department exempted Red Sea resort areas, specifically naming Sharm el-Sheikh, Taba, Nuweiba, and Dahab as safe for travel ([63]).
-
2017 Jul–Dec: UK electronics cabin baggage ban imposed on inbound flights from Egyptian Red Sea airports at Hurghada and Marsa Alam (effective July 28, 2017). Passengers could not carry cameras, laptops, or other electronic equipment in the cabin — a significant impact on underwater photographers traveling with expensive camera systems. The ban was lifted in December 2017 ([64]).
Conservation
-
2015 Dec: First Silence of the Sharks protest dive held in Eilat. Organized by David Pilosof, 87 divers descended on the Satil wreck holding protest posters, with a 2-meter-high 3D-printed shark statue as the focal point. Divers held individual letters spelling “NO SOUP FOR YOU.” Posters were drawn by students from Eilat and Cologne. Further dives were planned globally, with a 500-diver Mediterranean protest scheduled for October 2016. Pilosof: “70 million sharks are hunted every year all over the world. They cannot speak. But we can” ([65]).
-
2019 Oct: Joe Daniels documented an oceanic whitetip shark being slowly strangled by a discarded plastic regulator holder — “a very sad sight” — during Alex Mustard’s whitetip photography workshop ([66]).
-
2023 Sep: Anemone bleaching documented at Mangrove Bay (29-30°C water temperatures). Every anemone hosting clownfish was bleached, while surrounding hard corals remained intact. A nearby seagrass meadow had disappeared. A University of Tubingen professor studying the bay since 2003, and the dive base owner present since the 1980s, had never seen bleached anemones previously. Water temperatures in the southern Red Sea at St. Johns/Fury Shoals reached 32°C at depth during the same period, though “new coral growth on areas of dead coral where bleaching had occurred in the past” was observed ([67] — forum).
Publications
-
2016: Alex Mustard published Underwater Photography Masterclass, extensively featuring Red Sea imagery including the iconic Thistlegorm BSA motorbike backlit portrait ([68]).
-
2020: Mustard published Diving the Thistlegorm, a guidebook with 3D and photogrammetry imagery documenting the wreck’s artifacts ([69]).
-
2022: Andrey Ryanskiy published Red Sea Marine Life, a comprehensive photo guide covering the region from Aqaba and Eilat to Farasan Islands, South Sudan, and Eritrea. The guide includes 2,900 color photographs of 2,100+ species including 810+ fish, 250 corals, and nearly 350 nudibranchs and sea slugs, with several species new to science discovered during the book’s research ([70]).
