Overview
Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Lesser Sunda Islands of eastern Indonesia, encompasses the islands of Komodo, Rinca, and Padar along with surrounding waters. The park is famous both for its terrestrial Komodo dragons and for some of the most exhilarating diving in Indonesia. Strong currents sweeping through the channels between islands bring nutrient-rich water that supports extraordinarily lush reef systems — vibrant soft corals, crinoids, sea fans, and dense fish life ([1]). In 2001, approximately 36,308 hectares of coastal waters were designated as a strict no-take zone by the Indonesian government ([2]).
Diving in Komodo is primarily done from liveaboard vessels operating out of Labuan Bajo. Popular liveaboards mentioned on Wetpixel include The Seven Seas, Damai II, Komodo Dancer, Pelagian, Arenui, Samata, and Sea Safari vessels ([3], [4], [5]). Trip durations typically run 10—12 days, with costs ranging from around $2,300—$6,875 depending on vessel and cabin class ([6], [7]).
The area’s currents are both its greatest asset and its most significant hazard. In 2008, five divers including divemaster Kat Mitchinson were swept away at Tatawa Besar and went missing for over 40 hours before being found alive on a beach on the south coast of Komodo Island near Tanjung Manta. During their ordeal, they had to fend off Komodo dragons by throwing rocks. The incident prompted extensive discussion on Wetpixel about the importance of personal locator beacons (PLBs) for current-prone dive sites ([8]).
Dive Sites
Komodo National Park offers a remarkable range of diving environments. The Wetpixel community discussed sites across both the northern and southern regions of the park.
Northern Komodo
- Castle Rock — A current-swept seamount famous for pelagic action. Schools of spadefish, giant trevallies, sharks, and napoleon wrasses gather at this site. The aquarium-like conditions also make it a prime wide-angle location ([9], [10]).
- Crystal Rock (Crystal Bommie) — Adjacent to Castle Rock, another current-swept pinnacle with excellent schooling fish ([11]).
- Tatawa Besar — A popular dive site, though its strong and unpredictable currents were the site of the 2008 missing-diver incident ([12]).
- Batu Bolong — Mentioned as part of the search area during the 2008 incident, indicating its proximity to strong current zones ([13]).
- Wainilu (also spelled Wainilo) — Located on the north part of Rinca Island. A mixture of rubble and corals offering excellent macro and super-macro subjects, including paddleflap rhinopias ([14], [15]).
- Gili Lawa Darat — Scenic topside viewpoint overlooking toward Komodo Island ([16]).
Southern Komodo
- Cannibal Rock — One of the most celebrated dive sites in Komodo, located south of Rinca in Horseshoe Bay. Named when pioneer divers surveyed the area and witnessed a Komodo dragon eating another on the beach above the reef. The site is covered in yellow and pink soft corals, tubastrea cup corals, and dense sponge growth in every color, with feather stars throughout. Cold nutrient-rich upwelling water (temperatures can drop to 19—24°C in the dry season) drives the extraordinary productivity. Home to giant frogfish, prolific nudibranchs, and ladybug amphipods ([17], [18]). Mobula rays (likely short-fin pygmy devil rays, Mobula kuhlii) have been observed in large schools swooping in and out of the rock, blanketing divers ([19]).
- Yellow Wall (Yellow Wall of Texas) — Dramatic wall dive covered in soft corals, feather stars, and ladybug amphipod colonies ([20], [21]).
- Karang Makassar (Manta Alley) — A long barrier reef and manta cleaning station where both reef mantas (Manta alfredi) and pelagic mantas (M. birostris) congregate. Strong currents along the inside of the reef can make photography challenging ([22], [23]). Also features healthy hard coral formations ([24]).
- Three Sisters — Macro and super-macro site visited during the 2014 expedition ([25], [26]).
- Torpedo Alley (Torpedo Point) — Known for bobbit worms; expedition participants spent extended time photographing them here ([27], [28]).
- Eagle Rock (Eagle’s Head) — Part of the Horseshoe Bay complex ([29], [30]).
- Pelekan Head (Penekan Wall) — Wall site within Horseshoe Bay ([31], [32]).
- Dragon Creek — Another site in the southern complex ([33]).
- Horseshoe Bay — The primary anchorage for southern Komodo diving, providing access to multiple sites. The second 2014 expedition group spent the majority of their trip here due to excellent conditions: good visibility, gentle currents, pleasant water temperature, and extensive macro subjects. Night diving opportunities include octopus encounters. Described as having “everything” for underwater photographers ([34], [35], [36]).
- The Shotgun — Site of the rare 2017 megamouth shark encounter ([37]).
- Midnight Alley — A sandy-bottom muck dive site at Padar Island discovered and named by the second 2014 Wetpixel expedition group, described as “Lembeh-esque” ([38]).
Padar Island
Visited during the 2014 expeditions for both diving and topside excursions. Jason Bradley’s group explored new dive sites here, finding both scenic landscapes and productive muck diving ([39]).
Batu Tengah
Located in the center of Komodo National Park; its shallows were photographed by the Arriagas ([40]).
Seasonal Conditions
Komodo’s diving conditions vary dramatically between wet and dry seasons:
- Wet season (December—March): The northwest monsoon brings warmer, clearer water to southern Komodo. Visibility improves significantly and water temperatures reach approximately 84°F (29°C). This is considered the best time for underwater photography in the south, and fewer boats frequent the area. The 2014 Wetpixel expeditions were timed for February—March specifically for these conditions ([41], [42]).
- Dry season (June—October): Cold nutrient-rich upwelling water, sometimes dropping to 19—24°C, drives extraordinary biological productivity but reduces visibility and turns water green. This creates challenging conditions for wide-angle photography but excellent productivity for the reefs themselves ([43], [44]).
Forum members noted that even during the optimal wet season, conditions could be variable. The first 2014 expedition group encountered unseasonal cool, murky water at the beginning of their trip, though conditions improved substantially by the end. The second group benefited from clearer water overall ([45], [46]).
Marine Life
Komodo’s biodiversity was consistently described by Wetpixel contributors as exceptional, offering both wide-angle reef scenes and world-class macro subjects.
Wide-angle subjects: Reef mantas and pelagic mantas, mobula ray schools, reef sharks, giant trevallies, napoleon wrasses, schools of spadefish, fusiliers, and sweetlips. Reef scenes feature dense soft coral coverage, sea fans, sponges, and colorful crinoids ([47], [48]).
Macro subjects: Bobbit worms (Eunice aphroditois), Coleman shrimps on fire urchins, hairy squat lobsters (Lauriea siagiani), pygmy seahorses (Hippocampus bargibanti), bubble coral shrimps (Vir philippinensis), ladybug amphipods, leopard anemone shrimps, dragon shrimps, paddleflap and weedy rhinopias, giant frogfish, cuttlefish, bigfin reef squid, warty frogfish, tongue-eating isopods, and diverse nudibranchs ([49], [50], [51]).
Rare encounters: In July 2017, divers Penny Bielich and Heikki Innanen filmed a megamouth shark (approximately 5 meters long) at the Shotgun dive site while aboard the Samata luxury liveaboard. The footage captured one of the rarest shark species on camera in a remarkable encounter ([52]).
Community member Mike Veitch, comparing Komodo to Raja Ampat, noted that Komodo was superior for macro and invertebrate life, while Raja Ampat excelled in soft coral color and schooling fish behavior, calling the two “the top two locations in Indo for sheer variety of things to shoot” ([53]).
Wetpixel Expeditions
Komodo was one of the most frequently featured expedition destinations in Wetpixel’s history, with multiple Wetpixel-branded trips and extensive editorial coverage spanning over a decade.
2006: Light & Motion Video Workshop
The earliest Wetpixel-affiliated Komodo coverage was a video workshop aboard the Voyager liveaboard (Kararu’s newest vessel at the time), running August 24 to September 4, 2006. Led by underwater video experts Dan Baldocchi and Michael Topolovac of Light & Motion, the workshop offered participants the chance to try Sony FX1 and HC1 HD cameras in L&M housings ([54]).
2011: Ultimate Indonesia (Flores to Komodo)
Eric Cheng organized the “Ultimate Indonesia 2011” expedition aboard the MSY Damai II, split into two segments: Flores and Beangabang (October 27 to November 6) and Komodo (November 6—20). The route covered Komodo, Flores, Alor, Beangabang, Adonara, and Wetar. The trip combined muck diving at Beangabang with “incredibly-lush reefs” at Komodo, with the unusual approach of sitting on the best sites “until we get tired of them” rather than following a fixed schedule. The Damai II carried only 4 singles and 2 suites, making it one of the most intimate liveaboard experiences available. Dan Baldocchi handled bookings ([55], [56]).
2014: South Komodo Expeditions
The most significant Wetpixel Komodo coverage came with back-to-back South Komodo Expeditions aboard The Seven Seas liveaboard in February—March 2014. Planning began in January 2013, with six promotional articles published over 13 months before departure ([57], [58], [59], [60], [61], [62]).
Trip 1 (February 5—16): Led by Eric Cheng and Adam Hanlon. The group boarded at Labuan Bajo and dived Wainilu, Karang Makassar, Baleh, Sowalu, Eagle Rock, Pelekan Head, Three Sisters, Cannibal Rock, Dragon Creek, and Yellow Wall. Early conditions were somewhat murky and cool, but improved substantially toward the end. The group met in Bali before flying to Labuan Bajo, joined by Keri Bingham and Robert Delfs. Eric Cheng was shooting a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera underwater for the first time, in a Nauticam housing with a Panasonic 8mm fisheye lens, recording CinemaDNG raw (approximately 3.6 GB per minute) with a Magic Filter. He also flew aerial quadcopter footage of the dive sites — an early example of drone use on a dive expedition. The resulting Full Frame gallery featured images by Cheng, Hanlon, Brian Lam, Jennifer Chadwick, Phoebe Chadwick, Dan Kitchens, Katie Fraser, Lucien Schmidlin, Mark Goyen, Robin Reynolds, and Sue Chen ([63], [64]).
Trip 2 (February 18 to March 1): Led by Jason Bradley. This group explored the southern park but found conditions so good in Horseshoe Bay that they spent the majority of the trip there. They also dived with mantas, visited Three Sisters, and explored new sites around Padar Island, including discovering the muck dive site they named “Midnight Alley.” Contributing photographers included David Gordon, Glen Wagner, Yeang Chng, Andy Wallace, John Davies, Bob Rhode, Colin Robson, and Greg Bang. The resulting Part 2 Full Frame gallery showcased subjects from soldier porcelain crabs to pygmy seahorses ([65]).
Eric Cheng compiled a video slideshow of Trip 1, published on Vimeo. An active forum thread documented both trips with images and commentary, generating 29 replies ([66], [67]).

Conservation
Komodo National Park’s conservation challenges were a persistent theme in Wetpixel coverage across both editorial articles and community discussion.
No-Take Zones and Enforcement Failures
In 2001, approximately 36,308 hectares of coastal waters (extending 750 meters off all reefs, rocks, islands, and beaches) were designated as a strict no-take zone by the Indonesian government, with an additional approximately 30% set aside as “traditional use” areas for local fishing ([73]).
However, enforcement was persistently inadequate. Drew Wong reported in April 2012 that blast fishing, cyanide fishing, and line fishing continued throughout the no-take zones, calling it “the first real effort for Marine conservation in Indonesia” and urging the Wetpixel community to write comments in support of enforcing the park’s regulations on major news sites ([74]).
In October 2012, Adam Hanlon published a detailed account of a group that included Dr. Jos Pet (senior technical advisor at People and Nature Consulting International) and marine biologist Benjamin Kahn (principal of Apex Environmental), who witnessed a Sea Safari liveaboard crew hand-line fishing at Castle Rock within the no-take zone. The vessel was anchored directly on top of the reef between Crystal Bommie and Castle Rock. The group confronted the crew, documented the incident with photographs, and reported it to Sea Safari. The company responded positively, promising investigation, disciplinary action, and future compliance. Hanlon noted that ranger boats had been stationary on their moorings for two years, highlighting a fundamental failure of political will rather than resources ([75]).
Cruise Ship Development
In 2011, Wetpixel forum discussions addressed plans for a cruise ship pier in Komodo. Drew Wong argued that increased tourism visibility might actually help conservation by bringing attention and funding to the chronically underfunded park. Other community members, including user Gina, raised concerns about sewage dumping, dredging damage, and foot traffic impact. Drew noted that the park was supposed to be self-funding through tourism fees plus UNESCO and TNC/World Bank support, but still lacked money for fuel and ranger patrols. He recalled that in the 1990s, gun battles had been fought to protect the park from illegal fishing — a level of enforcement that had since disappeared ([76]).
Komodo Dragon Science
A 2005 Wetpixel forum discussion covered the then-new discovery that Komodo dragons are venomous, overturning the longstanding belief that their bite infections were caused by bacteria. Forum member Craig Ruaux reported on a Nature paper, while Drew Wong and frogfish (R.D.) engaged experts including Claudio Ciofi at Yale and specialists at the San Diego Zoo. Paul Kay shared a first-person account of a close encounter with a charging dragon during a topside photo session ([77]).
Community Discussion
Komodo was one of the most discussed dive destinations on the Wetpixel forums, with over 65 threads spanning 2003 to 2023. Common topics included:
- Destination comparisons: Frequent “vs” threads comparing Komodo to Raja Ampat, Lembeh, Sulawesi, Palau, and Rangiroa/Fakarava. The consensus held that Komodo offered the best macro and invertebrate diversity in Indonesia, while Raja Ampat excelled in soft coral scenery and schooling fish ([78]).
- Liveaboard recommendations: Extensive discussion of vessel choices, with the Damai II, Seven Seas, Komodo Dancer, Pelagian, and Arenui frequently recommended. Forum members compared pricing, cabin classes, itineraries, and photographic accommodations ([79], [80]).
- Current safety: The 2008 missing-diver incident generated significant discussion about safety equipment, with members sharing information about personal locator beacons (PLBs), satellite phones, rescue streamers, and rescue lasers. One member described a $1,100 canister setup containing an ACR ResQFix PLB, rescue streamer, military-grade mirror, and rescue laser ([81]).
- Trip reports and imagery: Numerous showcase threads featuring photography from various trips, shot with equipment ranging from Nikon D2X to Panasonic GH4/GH5 to Sony A7RII to RED Komodo cinema cameras ([82], [83], [84]).
