Overview
The Sony Alpha 1 (α1 / ILCE-1) was announced on January 26, 2021, as Sony’s flagship mirrorless camera, combining high resolution, high speed, and advanced video capabilities in a single body. ([1]) It was described by Sony as “the most technologically advanced, innovative camera that Sony has ever released,” marking what the company called “a new era in professional imaging.” The Alpha 1 shipped in March 2021 at a price of $6,500.
For underwater photographers, the A1 represented a breakthrough primarily because of its 1/400 second mechanical shutter flash sync speed — nearly double the 1/200–1/250s standard on most cameras. This allowed shooters in bright tropical waters to use smaller apertures or lower ISOs to control ambient light while maintaining strobe fill, a meaningful technical advantage for shallow-water work. In APS-C crop mode, sync speed reached 1/500s. ([2]) The camera also offered electronic shutter flash sync up to 1/200s, a first for the Alpha series. ([3])
The A1’s advanced autofocus system — with 759 phase-detection points covering 92% of the sensor and up to 120 AF/AE calculations per second — proved particularly effective underwater. Community members noted that the A1’s AF engine dramatically improved the performance of the Sony FE 90mm macro lens, which had been prone to hunting on older Sony bodies. Phil Rudin observed that “the AF has improved from awful to world class in about six years.” ([4])
Backscatter ranked the Sony A1 as the best all-around full-frame advanced mirrorless camera for 2022. ([5])

Flash Sync Speed — The Underwater Breakthrough
The A1’s dual-driven shutter system (spring and electromagnetic drive actuator with carbon fiber curtain) achieved a world’s-fastest 1/400s flash sync speed with the mechanical shutter. ([7]) This was widely discussed in the underwater photography community as a genuine differentiator.
Phil Rudin’s review for UwP magazine noted a critical discovery by Jim Decker of Backscatter: deep in the camera menu, a setting called “Flash Sync Spd. Prty” (under Flash) overrides the factory auto setting, allowing 1/400s (or 1/500s in APS-C mode) flash sync with any manual or TTL flash trigger — not just Sony’s proprietary triggers as initially assumed. ([8])
The electronic shutter also supported flash sync up to 1/200s for the first time in an Alpha camera, enabling silent shooting with strobes. Combined with UW Technics TTL converters and Retra Pro flashes, high-speed synchronization up to 1/8000s was possible. ([9])
Wetpixel Live Preview
Three days after the announcement, Adam Hanlon and Alex Mustard discussed the A1’s specifications on Wetpixel Live, analyzing which features had particular relevance for underwater photographers. They stressed that the camera had not yet shipped, so no underwater testing had been possible. ([10]) The A1 was discussed again in a February 2022 Wetpixel Live episode alongside the Canon EOS R series, Nikon Z9, OM Digital OM-1, and Panasonic GH6, comparing their specifications for underwater use. ([11])
Housing Availability
The A1 generated an unusually rapid “housing race” in 2021, with five major manufacturers shipping housings within the first year:

Nauticam NA-α1
The first dedicated housing to ship, the Nauticam NA-α1 (SKU 17430) arrived in April 2021 at $3,534. It uses the N100 port system and offers optional fiber optic triggering via the Nauticam Mini Flash Trigger for Sony (26302). Features include M24 bulkhead for HDMI 1.4/2.0 output, M14 bulkhead for vacuum valve, integrated vacuum check and leak detection electronics, DSLR-style handles with stainless steel stiffening brackets, and dual rear thumb-levers. Weight is 2.7kg in air, 0.6kg underwater (with camera and battery). A conversion kit (17430UK) allows the housing to be used with the Sony A7S III. ([12])
Community members noted the NA-α1 is notably negative underwater, requiring float arms for balance — a recurring discussion topic. The housing also lacks an M10 mount point or cold shoe for focus lights, an oversight compared to other Nauticam Sony housings. ([13])
Phil Rudin reviewed the Sony A1 and NA-A1 system for UwP magazine issue 120 (May/June 2021). ([14])
Ikelite 200DL
Announced in April 2021, the Ikelite 200DL housing accommodates both the Sony A1 and A7S III cameras in a single housing (with separate camera mounting plates included). Priced at $1,795, it was the most affordable option. The ABS-PC construction is corrosion-free and lighter than aluminum. It uses the DL (Dry Lock) port system with an ICS-5 bulkhead for electrical strobe triggering and an optional DL2 DS Link TTL converter for TTL with Ikelite DS strobes. A vacuum valve is included as standard. Depth rated to 200ft (60m). Made in the USA. ([15])
Note: Fiber optic only strobes are not compatible with the Ikelite system — strobes must connect via electrical sync cord. ([16])
Seacam
Seacam shipped their A1 housing in June 2021. It offers S6 and/or fiber optic strobe triggering and is compatible with all standard Seacam ports. The housing has 4 bulkheads for S6, vacuum, or video out. Dimensions are 250 x 160 x 120mm (excluding port, viewfinder, and handles), weight 1810g. Tested to 80m with a super deep version available. ([17])
Aquatica A1
Shipped in October 2021 at $3,199 with a complete Surveyor vacuum system (pump, valve, and sensor) included as standard — previously an optional accessory. CNC machined from 6061 T6 aluminum with MIL-A-8625 anodized coating and baked-on powder coat. Strobe triggering options include double Nikonos, single Ikelite-manual, or dual optical (with LED trigger). Depth rated to 90m, upgradable to 130m with deep spring kit. Weight 2.2kg without handles. Compatible with all Aquatica DSLR-sized bayonet mount ports. Available in custom colors. ([18])
Community members reported issues with strobe triggering using the Aquatica optical flash trigger with Sea & Sea YS-D3 Mark II strobes; the Sea & Sea strobes’ low-sensitivity light sensors made LED triggering difficult. ([19])
Marelux MX-A1
Marelux, a new housing brand introduced to the Wetpixel community in December 2021 by ambassador Vladimir Mladenovic, offered the MX-A1 at $3,198 (basic black; $200 upgrade for other colors including Burgundy, Mocha, Oliver Green, Silver Gray, and Yale Blue). ([20])
Phil Rudin reviewed the MX-A1 for Wetpixel in March 2022, finding it “very well balanced and easy to use” underwater, with controls that “fall easily at your fingertips.” Notable features include a lime green main O-ring (easier to spot debris), metal camera tray for heat dissipation during 8K video, M16/M24 bulkheads, and a twin locking system. The housing accepts Nauticam N120 ports via an adapter ring ($200) and is compatible with the Nauticam WACP-1. A Sony A7S III conversion kit is available for $248. ([21])
Rudin noted quality control issues on his prototype unit (AF selection dial alignment, intermittent four-way controller), but stated these were corrected on production models. ([22])
Marelux ambassadors shooting with the A1 system include Renee Capozzola, Scott Portelli, Keigo Kawamura, Aleksander Nordahl, and Vladimir Mladenovic. ([23])
UwP magazine issue 125 (March/April 2022) also carried a review of the Marelux Sony A1 housing. ([24])
Strobe Triggering
Flash triggering on the A1 in underwater housings uses either fiber optic or electrical methods depending on the housing:
- Nauticam: Fiber optic via Mini Flash Trigger for Sony (26302), LED-based, manual only, coin-cell battery powered. ([25])
- Ikelite: Electrical sync cord with ICS-5 bulkhead (manual); optional DL2 DS Link TTL converter for Ikelite DS strobes. ([26])
- Aquatica: Nikonos electrical, Ikelite electrical, or dual optical (with LED trigger). ([27])
- Marelux: Fiber optic via optional manual flash trigger ($198), compatible with Inon Z-330/Z-240, Backscatter MF-1, Sea & Sea, Retra, and others. UW Technics TTL converters ($460) available for Marelux housings, supporting high-speed sync with Retra Pro flashes up to 1/8000s. ([28])
Community members using the Nauticam housing frequently recommended Retra Pro X strobes with superchargers as the best pairing, citing the circular flash tube, flexible beam modification, and strong recycle times for the A1’s fast burst shooting. ([29])
Lens Combinations for Underwater Use
Wide Angle
The A1’s 50MP sensor and N100 port system on Nauticam enabled several wide-angle approaches, extensively debated in the community:
- Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye (via Sigma MC-11 adapter): The most common fisheye option. Limited to 15mm on full frame to avoid circular image. Can be paired with a Kenko 1.4x teleconverter for 15–21mm equivalent zoom range (144–102° horizontal FOV). Works with 140mm dome ports. ([30])
- Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 with Nauticam WWL-1B or WACP: The kit lens paired with water contact optics. Testing by Interceptor121 found the 28-60mm “may be a great kit lens for the A7C but it is not a lens that gives justice to the A1 or A7R series camera” — edge sharpness was limited by the lens, not the wet optic. ([31])
- Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM: Premium rectilinear option requiring 230mm dome port. Used by Phil Rudin in his Marelux review with excellent results at Ginnie Springs and with Florida manatees. ([32])
- Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM: Pairs with Nauticam WACP-2 for up to 128° FOV with sharp corners and near-zero minimum focus distance. ([33])
- Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8: Praised by community member Interceptor121 as performing well at f/5.6–f/8 behind a 180mm dome, beating the WWL/WACP-C combination in edge sharpness by 1–2 stops. ([34])
Macro
- Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 G OSS Macro: The primary macro lens for the A1 system. The A1’s advanced AF engine dramatically improved this lens’s underwater performance — where previous Sony bodies (A7R II and earlier) had “awful” autofocus that hunted frequently, the A1 could focus accurately even in near-darkness with AF-C and flexible spot tracking, eliminating the need for focus limiters that older bodies required. Both Phil Rudin and Alex Mustard confirmed excellent results for blackwater photography. ([35]) ([36])
Video Optics
For underwater videography, the A1 paired with the Sony 28-60mm and Nauticam WACP-1 was considered the reference wide-angle video setup. The 90mm macro served double duty for macro video. Community discussions noted that the A1’s 50MP sensor tested lens/wet optic combinations more harshly than the A7S III’s 12MP sensor. ([37])
A limitation noted by the community: video autofocus tracking on the A1 requires the touchscreen (not accessible through a housing), and Sony had not provided a button-based alternative. Users reported submitting feature requests to Sony’s “voice of customer” team. ([38])
Community Discussion
The Sony A1 generated extensive discussion on the Wetpixel forums from 2021 onward, with users debating its merits against alternatives including the Nikon Z8/Z9 and Sony A7R V:
- A1 vs. Nikon Z8 vs. Sony A7R V: A detailed 2023 comparison thread (51 replies) weighed cost of switching from Nikon D500 to mirrorless. The A1 was noted for superior battery life over the Z8, better autofocus tracking, the best EVF, and stacked sensor benefits, but was also the most expensive option. The A7R V offered the most affordable switch but lacked a stacked sensor. ([39])
- Build recommendations: Multiple threads (2023) discussed complete A1 underwater builds, with the Nauticam housing being the most commonly recommended despite the high negative buoyancy requiring float arms. ([40]) ([41])
- Heat management: A classified listing discussion confirmed no overheating problems underwater, even in warm water — the housing and water serve as effective heat sinks. ([42])
- Full-frame considerations: Community members noted that the A1’s high resolution highlights optical flaws in some lens/port combinations, requiring careful lens selection. The reduced depth of field at any given f-stop compared to sub-full-frame systems also required attention. ([43])
Significance
The Sony Alpha 1 represented a convergence point for underwater photography in the early 2020s. At $6,500 for the body alone — plus $1,795–$3,534 for housings — it was among the most expensive underwater camera systems available. Yet its combination of 50MP resolution, 30fps burst speed, 8K video, and the 1/400s flash sync speed made it uniquely capable across shooting disciplines.
The A1’s release coincided with the emergence of Marelux as a new housing manufacturer — the first major new brand in the underwater housing market since Nauticam entered approximately a decade earlier. Phil Rudin observed that “the companies that succeed in the underwater market are run by hard-core divers and underwater photographers.” ([44])
The camera’s autofocus advances proved transformative for macro shooting with the Sony 90mm lens, turning what had been a frustrating experience on older Sony bodies into “world class” performance, according to community consensus. ([45])
