Overview
The Nikon Z7 was Nikon’s high-resolution full-frame mirrorless camera, announced on August 23, 2018, alongside the more versatile Nikon Z6 as the inaugural cameras of the new Z-mount system ([1]). The Z7 targeted photographers who demanded maximum detail, combining a 45.7-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor (no optical low-pass filter) with 493 on-sensor phase-detect AF points covering approximately 90% of the imaging area both horizontally and vertically ([2]). It offered 9 fps continuous shooting in 12-bit RAW and a native ISO range of 64-25,600 (expandable to ISO 32-102,400) ([3]).
At the heart of the Z-mount system was a new, larger-diameter 55mm mount (17% larger than F-mount) with a shallow 16mm flange distance, which Nikon said “unlocks further possibilities of lens design, greatly increasing capabilities in optical performance” ([4]). The wider mount exposes more of the sensor to the lens, and Nikon designed the system to support lenses as fast as f/0.95, demonstrated by the development of the NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct ([5]).
The Z7 shipped from September 27, 2018 at $3,399.95, while the Z6 followed in late November at $1,995.95 ([6]).

Underwater Photography Significance
For underwater photographers, the Z7 represented Nikon’s entry into full-frame mirrorless territory, a market segment increasingly dominated by Sony. The identical body design between Z7 and Z6 was particularly advantageous for housing manufacturers, as a single housing could serve both cameras ([9]).
Advantages
The Z7’s key benefits for underwater use included:
- In-body stabilization (IBIS): 5-axis vibration reduction equivalent to approximately 5.0 stops, a first for Nikon. This worked with both Z-mount and adapted F-mount lenses — non-VR F-mount lenses received 3-axis stabilization, while VR and Z-mount lenses received 5-axis stabilization ([10], [11]).
- Full-frame 4K UHD video: Recording at 30fps using the full sensor width with no pixel binning, plus Full HD at up to 120fps. 10-bit N-Log output was available via HDMI for professional color grading with 12-stop, 1,300% dynamic range ([12]).
- F-mount lens compatibility: The FTZ adapter allowed use of existing Nikon fisheye, macro, and wide-angle lenses, protecting shooters’ existing lens investments ([13]).
- Silent shooting: Electronic shutter eliminated shake and noise caused by shutter release, useful for skittish marine subjects ([14]).
- Compact form factor: The mirrorless design produced a smaller housing footprint. At BOOT 2019, Nauticam demonstrated that their NA-Z7 housing was “slightly smaller” than their DSLR housings, with the FTZ adapter integrated within the housing body itself ([15]).
- USB-C charging: The Z7 supported in-camera battery charging via USB-C when using the EN-EL15b battery, convenient for dive boats without many power outlets ([16]).
Limitations
Early hands-on testing by Adam Hanlon at the Nikon Professional Roadshow 2019 revealed autofocus limitations relevant to underwater use. While AF performed fine with the Nikkor 8-15mm f/3.5-4.5 fisheye, the 105mm f/2.8 VR macro lens was “disappointing” — the camera “hunted a lot” and was “both slower and less accurate” compared to the D500/D850/D5. The Z7 also lacked dynamic-area AF options (D25, D72, D153) and Group Area AF modes available on Nikon DSLRs ([17]). A reader commented that these AF limitations convinced them “to continue to enjoy my D800 and D500 cameras” ([18]).
The limited Z-mount native lens lineup was also initially problematic for underwater use. At launch, no Z-mount lenses were particularly suitable for underwater photography, meaning shooters had to rely on the FTZ adapter with F-mount fisheye and macro lenses “for the foreseeable future” ([19]). Additionally, Tokina formally confirmed that autofocus did not work with either version of their popular 10-17mm f/3.5-4.5 fisheye (AT-X 107) or their 100mm macro on Z cameras via the FTZ adapter — only manual focus was possible ([20]).
Z-Mount Lens Development for Underwater Use
Native Z-mount lenses relevant to underwater photography emerged gradually:
- NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S (announced January 2019, $1,299.95): An ultra-wide-angle zoom with a minimum focus distance of 0.28m, which “may work behind a dome port.” It was the world’s first full-frame 14mm lens to support direct filter attachment. Nikon emphasized it was designed to maximize the resolving power of high-pixel-count cameras like the Z7 ([21]).
- NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S (announced September 2020, $2,399.95): A faster ultra-wide zoom with a minimum focus distance of 0.28m. Nauticam designed the Wide Angle Corrector Port (WACP) II specifically for use with this lens, offering a 140-degree field of view with “sharpness across the whole frame, even at large apertures” ([22], [23]).
Firmware Updates
Firmware 2.20 (December 2019)
Nikon released firmware version 2.20 for both the Z7 and Z6, adding two significant capabilities:
- CFexpress card support: CFexpress cards used the same form factor as XQD, so no physical modification to the card slot was needed. Both card types could be used interchangeably after the update ([24]).
- ProRes RAW video output: A paid upgrade ($199.95) enabled recording of 12-bit 4K UHD or Full HD RAW video to Atomos Ninja V recorders connected via HDMI. This required an internal upgrade performed at a Nikon Service Center ([25]).
The ProRes RAW capability was first announced at CES 2019 in January alongside Eye AF and CFexpress support ([26]). Initially Nikon suggested the RAW output would be a free firmware update, but by August 2019 they clarified it would require “an additional internal upgrade that will need to be performed at a local Nikon service center, which will incur a service charge” ([27]).
N-Log 3D LUT (August 2019)
Nikon released a free dedicated 3D LUT for the N-Log feature on Z7 and Z6, compatible with the Rec.709 color space. This enabled adjustment of brightness, saturation, and hue in post-production color grading, bringing out the “full dynamic range” of the 10-bit HDMI output ([28]).
Nikon Z 7II
In October 2020, Nikon announced the Z 7II as a significant upgrade. Key improvements included ([29]):
- Dual EXPEED 6 processors: Improved processing speed and burst capability
- 10 fps shooting: Up from 9 fps, with 3.3x the buffer capacity of the original Z7 in 12-bit lossless compressed RAW
- Dual memory card slots: One CFexpress (Type B)/XQD slot plus one SD card slot (UHS-II), a major improvement over the single-slot Z7
- Improved low-light AF: Detection down to -3 EV (compared to the Z7’s -2 EV), allowing reliable focus acquisition “in half the light”
- 4K 60p video: A significant upgrade from the Z7’s 4K 30p maximum
- Eye-Detection AF in video: The Z 7II was among the first Nikon cameras to support Eye-Detection AF and Animal-Detection AF during video recording
- Blackmagic RAW support: In addition to ProRes RAW, the optional upgrade added support for Blackmagic RAW when using the Blackmagic Design Video Assist 12G HDR recorder
- USB power delivery: Could draw power from USB source while in use, preserving camera battery
The Z 7II retained the same 45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor and 493 AF points. It was priced at $2,999.95 and shipped in December 2020 ([30]).

DIY Housing Conversions
Community member Svilen Spasov documented a successful conversion of a Nauticam NA-Z7 housing to fit the newer Z6/Z7 II cameras using a 3D-printed camera holder/slider. The original Z6/Z7 was 2mm thinner than the newer models, with the extra thickness mostly in the back. The conversion required modifying the housing’s internal limiter rubber pins and replacing the camera holder part. He confirmed all buttons worked and aligned properly ([43]).
Community Discussion
In community forums, the Z7 was discussed in the context of the broader mirrorless transition. A 2022 survey on “What system are you using?” showed users migrating from Nikon DSLRs (D850, D800) to Nikon mirrorless (Z9, Z7), though some noted the mirrorless housings were not significantly smaller or lighter than DSLR equivalents at the full-frame level ([44]).
By 2023, discussion had shifted to comparing the Z7/Z7 II’s successor, the Z8, against Sony alternatives (A1, A7R V) for underwater use. The Z7 generation was seen as an important stepping stone in Nikon’s mirrorless journey, but the Z8’s stacked sensor and improved AF tracking represented a more compelling upgrade for underwater photographers ([45]).
Successor: Nikon Z9 and Z8
The Z7 line was effectively succeeded by the Nikon Z9 (announced October 2021, $5,499.95), which used the same 45.7MP resolution but with a stacked CMOS sensor and new EXPEED 7 processor offering “approximately 10x faster” processing than the Z 7II. The Z9 added 8K video recording and AF processing at 120 cycles per second ([46]).
