Overview
The Canon EOS R6 was announced alongside the Canon EOS R5 on July 9, 2020 in a major Canon virtual launch event, becoming available from late August 2020 at $2,499 body only ([1]). Positioned as the “accomplished little brother” of the R5, the R6 shared the same Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system and 5-axis IBIS but used a 20.1-megapixel sensor derived from Canon’s professional flagship 1D X Mark III. The lower resolution was deliberate — it prioritized high-ISO performance and speed over raw megapixel count ([2]).
Canon’s press release positioned the R5 and R6 as a milestone: “For all of the Canon research and development team members who worked tirelessly on the production of these new products, today marks the culmination of a long journey,” said Tatsuro “Tony” Kano, Executive Vice President of Canon U.S.A.’s Imaging Technologies & Communications Group ([3]).
The R6 was significant in the context of the mirrorless revolution because it brought Canon’s most advanced autofocus technology to a relatively affordable price point, making it accessible to underwater photographers transitioning from Canon DSLRs. By Q3 2022, Canon was the market share leader for mirrorless cameras in the United States ([4]).
Key Features for Underwater Use
The EOS R6 brought several features particularly relevant to underwater photographers:
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with up to approximately 100% AF area coverage and 1,053 automatically selected AF zones, plus eye/face/body detection for humans and animals (dogs, cats, birds) — with potential for tracking marine subjects ([5])
- 20 fps silent shooting with electronic shutter for capturing fast-moving subjects without startling marine life
- 4K 59.94p video with 10-bit 4:2:2 Canon Log (H.265) or HDR PQ (H.265), making it a capable hybrid stills/video platform ([6])
- ISO 100-102,400 from the 1D X Mark III sensor, providing excellent low-light performance for ambient-light shooting
- 5-axis IBIS with up to 8 stops of shake correction when paired with IS-equipped RF lenses, the first Canon cameras with in-body stabilization ([7])
- RF lens mount with full backward compatibility via EF-RF adapters, enabling use of established underwater lens selections. New LP-E6NH battery with higher capacity than previous models ([8])
Housing Ecosystem
The EOS R6 attracted housing support from all major manufacturers, reflecting its popularity with underwater photographers:
Nauticam NA-R6
Nauticam began shipping the NA-R6 in December 2020, priced at $3,965. The housing uses the N120 port system and supports both RF-mount and EF-mount lenses via Canon’s adapter. Key features include:
- Dual lens release buttons (one for RF, one for EF lenses used with optional Canon adapter)
- M14, M16, and M24 bulkheads
- “Mission Control” ergonomic layout: dual thumb lever and dual sub-lever by the right handle (upper lever = AF-On, lower = Q button; sub-levers = M-Fn and Record); left thumb lever for Playback; dedicated LCD/EVF switch
- Strobes triggered via optional manual LED trigger or TTL flash trigger
- Depth rated to 100m ([9])

Marelux housings are machined from solid aluminum blocks with customizable color finishes and come with 2-year warranty in Pelican-style hard cases ([13])
- UW Technics shipped TTL boards for Canon cameras in Marelux housings, compatible with R6 ([14])
Community Discussion
In forum discussions comparing mirrorless options for underwater use, the R6 was frequently mentioned alongside the Sony A7 IV and Nikon options. Community member JYk posed the question of “how the current gen (Canon R6 or Sony A7 IV) compares to old DLSR like the Nikon D850” — a question that captured the broader transition anxiety among underwater photographers moving from DSLRs to mirrorless ([15]).
The R6 was noted for Canon’s superior underwater video white balance compared to Nikon, with community members consistently recommending Canon or Sony for serious underwater video work. In the “perfect underwater camera” thread, the R6’s combination of the 1D X Mark III sensor with affordable pricing made it a popular recommendation for Canon shooters seeking a mirrorless transition camera ([16]).
Canon EOS R6 Mark II
Canon announced the EOS R6 Mark II on November 2, 2022, priced at $2,499 — the same as the original. It was described as “the first EOS R series full-frame mirrorless to take the step into the second generation” ([17]).
Key improvements over the original R6:
- 24.2 MP sensor (up from 20.1 MP)
- Up to 40 fps with electronic shutter (up from 20 fps)
- 6K RAW video recording externally via ProRes RAW to Ninja V
