Overview
Isotta is a family-owned Italian manufacturer of underwater camera housings and lighting equipment, operating under the corporate name Isotecnic Srl. Since 1967, the Isotta family has marketed high-end equipment for underwater video, photography, and lighting from Castelnuovo del Garda in the Verona province of Northern Italy. The company began its own production in 1980 and has maintained 100% Italian manufacturing throughout its history ([1]).
Known informally as the “Ferrari of the Sea,” Isotta’s products are immediately recognizable by their signature red-anodized aluminum construction. All housings, from compact camera models to full-frame mirrorless systems, feature this distinctive red finish ([2]). The company produces a comprehensive range of underwater imaging equipment: SLR stills housings, compact stills housings, mirrorless housings, video housings, action camera housings, domes, strobes, arms, clamps, and accessories ([3]).
Isotta has a strong following in southern Europe, particularly in Italy, Spain, and France, though the brand is less well-known in English-speaking markets. As Alex Mustard noted in 2012, “They have a strong following in southern Europe (especially Italy, Spain and France) but we hear less about them on English language forums” ([4]). The company has progressively expanded its international presence through trade shows including DEMA, BOOT, EUDI, and ADEX.
Company History
Founding and Early Years (1967-1999)
The Isotta family began marketing underwater equipment in 1967. In 1980, Egidio Isotta created the company’s first underwater strobe, the Isomat 33, establishing the signature red color that would become the brand’s hallmark. The company Isotecnic Srl was formally established to produce strobes, which gained popularity in Europe. In the UK during the 1980s, Isotecnic strobes were well-known, with Ocean Optics in London serving as a dealer ([5], [6]). The company later expanded from strobes to camera housings in the late 1990s.
Second Generation Leadership (2006-present)
Since 2006, the company has been directed by Elisa Isotta and her husband Andrea, representing the second generation of family leadership. Elisa Isotta has personally represented the brand at international trade shows including ADEX in Singapore, DEMA in the United States, and BOOT in Germany ([7], [8]). Egidio Isotta remained involved with the business at least through 2013, when Alex Mustard met him at the EUDI show in Milan ([9]).
International Expansion
The company has steadily grown its international distribution network. At ADEX 2017 and 2018, Isotta was represented through DiveSea Singapore as their Southeast Asian agent ([10], [11]). In the United States, Backscatter has served as a dealer, with Simon Lorenz of Insider Divers also associated with the brand ([12]). By the early 2020s, Isotta had developed a notable user base in Australia, particularly in Sydney ([13]).
Design Philosophy and Engineering
Signature Features
Isotta housings share a consistent set of design features across their product line:
- Red-anodized aluminum body: Anti-corrosion, thermo-coated aluminum in the company’s signature red color ([14])
- Single-hand closing mechanism: A distinctive helicoid or rotary knob closure system that allows one-handed opening and closing. For DSLR housings, Isotta claims this is “the only single latch closing mechanism in the DSLR housing market” ([15])
- Double O-ring seals: All buttons, dials, ports, and removable parts use dual O-ring seals for redundant waterproofing ([16])
- Moisture alarm: Built-in humidity detection with LED indicator (and later models with acoustic warning), powered by a user-replaceable battery ([17])
- Detachable rear door: The back housing separates completely from the front body, making camera insertion easier ([18])
- Sliding camera tray: A locking tray system for secure camera positioning ([19])
- Laser-engraved controls: All function icons are permanently engraved into buttons and housing body, described as “a unique feature of Isotta housings” ([20])
- 100-meter depth rating for most housings; 200 meters for GoPro action camera housings ([21])
- Customizable accessory ports: M6, M8, M16, and M24 threaded holes for mounting accessories, vacuum systems, sync cords, or HDMI monitors ([22])
- Custom engraving: Users can have their name or logo engraved on the housing ([23])
Port System
Isotta uses a proprietary bayonet port mount system. Full-frame and APS-C DSLR/mirrorless housings use a 120mm bayonet connection, while Micro Four Thirds housings like the Olympus E-M5 Mark III use a smaller 102mm bayonet ([24]). Compact camera housings use M67 threaded ports for wet lens attachment ([25]).
While Isotta uses its own port bayonet, Nauticam N120 ports can be used on Isotta housings via a Sea & Sea port adaptor ring, according to Elisa Isotta herself and confirmed by users in the field ([26], [27]). This cross-compatibility has been an important factor for photographers considering a switch from Nauticam.
Strobe Connection Options
Isotta housings support multiple strobe triggering methods. All housings include fiber optic connections as standard. Depending on the model, optional Nikonos N5 or S6 electrical sync cord bulkheads can be installed. Some models, particularly those for Nikon cameras, ship with a TTL converter included, offering automatic flash control via fiber optic or electrical connections ([28], [29]). Third-party TTL solutions from UW Technics are also compatible with Isotta housings ([30]).

Market Position and Pricing
Isotta occupies a distinctive niche in the underwater housing market. Among aluminum housing manufacturers, Isotta has consistently been positioned as the most affordable option. A 2022 community price comparison of multiple camera housings found that “for metal housings Isotta is the best buy” and identified Isotta as offering the “best bang for the buck among the aluminium brands” in a pricing tier with Aquatica and Marelux, significantly below the premium tier of Nauticam, Seacam, and Subal, which commanded roughly a 60% premium over Isotta’s pricing ([64]).
Typical pricing (including 22% Italian VAT) has ranged from:
- Action camera housings: EUR 450
- Compact camera housings: EUR 950-990
- Micro Four Thirds housings: EUR 1,300
- Full-frame mirrorless/DSLR housings: EUR 2,590-2,820
Isotta housings are also notably lighter and more compact than competitors in some configurations. Forum users cited weight and size savings as a key reason for choosing Isotta over Nauticam, with one Sydney-based community noting a Nikon Z6 housing that was “way smaller and lighter than Nauticam’s version” ([65]).
Community Discussion
User Experiences
Forum discussions reveal generally positive experiences from Isotta owners. In a 71-reply thread discussing switching from Nauticam to Isotta, users reported:
- Ergonomics: “Ergonomics are very good, shutter-trigger und back-button-focus are right at thumb and index-finger” though users recommended trying before buying ([66])
- Build quality: “The housing is really sturdy” with simple, user-serviceable mechanics — “I have taken apart the controls and they are simple to remove, repair and restore, something I was not able to do on the Nauticam” ([67])
- Customer service: Multiple users praised Isotta’s responsiveness, including custom modifications. One user had Isotta produce a custom rear window to fit a Nauticam 45-degree viewfinder, and another had a custom zoom gear made for the Sony 28-60mm lens ([68], [69])
- Minor issues: One user noted needing to do “a little bit of finetuning on alignment” by adjusting screws, but considered this a positive for field serviceability ([70])
Wet Lens Compatibility
A recurring discussion topic has been Isotta’s compatibility with Nauticam’s wet wide-angle lenses (WWL-1, WWL-1B, WACP). While Isotta does not produce its own wet lenses or publish extensive port compatibility charts like Nauticam, users have successfully paired Isotta housings with Nauticam wet optics. In November 2022, a user documented the first known Isotta housing (Sony A7R IV) successfully used with a Nauticam WWL-1B, reporting “no vignetting at wide open 28mm” and “corner sharpness quite good (better than 16-35 with glass dome port)” ([71]).
Community members have noted that Isotta’s lack of comprehensive port charts and wet lens testing is a disadvantage compared to Nauticam, which “does really well with testing new lenses quickly and constantly revising their port charts.” However, forum users also observed that Isotta appeared to be growing: “In general I perceive Isotta as a company that are slowly starting to produce more housings for more cameras” ([72]).
Strobe Comparisons
The Red 64 strobe, announced in 2019, generated community discussion comparing it to competitors like the Retra Pro and Seacam 160. Analysis suggested the Red 64 offered approximately 0.5-1 stop more light than a Retra Pro with diffuser at similar beam angles, though with likely worse recycle times due to using 8xAA batteries at nearly double the power per shot ([73]).
Notable Users and Recognition
Several photographers have used Isotta housings in professional and competition contexts:
- An unnamed Italian photographer (Marco) who won the Animal Portraits Category of WPOTY used an Isotta housing, as mentioned by Alex Mustard in 2012 ([74])
- A WPOTY 2017 finalist used a Nikon D800 in an Isotta housing with Seacam strobes ([75])
- Domy Tripodi used a Canon G11 in an Isotta housing for a notable John Dory portrait from the Mediterranean ([76])
- Enrico Rabboni won prizes at the Madeira Underwater European Contest using an Isotta GH5 housing with a Nauticam WWL-1 port ([77])
- Isotta housings were reviewed in issue 130 of Underwater Photography magazine (UwP) in January 2023, alongside Nauticam WACP-C and large-diameter dome reviews ([78])
Trade Show Presence
Isotta has exhibited at major underwater imaging trade shows:
- EUDI (Italy): Shown at EUDI 2013 in Milan with D800, D7000, Sony RX-100, Canon G15 housings, and AV100 strobe. Alex Mustard described the stand as “busy” and noted the housings are “the proud product of an Italian family business” with “a number of original design solutions” ([79]). The Nikon Z6/Z7 housing debuted at EUDI Bologna in March 2019 ([80])
- DEMA (USA): Exhibited at DEMA 2016 and 2017 ([81], [82])
- BOOT (Germany): Exhibited at BOOT 2017 and 2018. Simon Lorenz of Insider Divers/Isotta presented a talk on wreck diving at BOOT 2018 ([83], [84])
- ADEX (Singapore): Represented by DiveSea Singapore at ADEX 2017, 2018, and 2019. Elisa Isotta attended personally to demonstrate housings and the Red 64 strobe ([85], [86], [87])
