Overview
The Canon EOS 5D was the first affordable full-frame DSLR, officially revealed on August 22, 2005 ([1]). While Canon’s EOS 1Ds and 1Ds Mark II had previously offered full-frame sensors, their professional price points (US$7,000+) limited adoption. The 5D brought 12.8-megapixel full-frame imaging to an intended price of US$3,300, as Alex Mustard noted in his announcement: “This camera is intended to sell for $3300 USD, and may well appeal to pro-Canon shooters as a second body” ([2]). The camera was in stock at B&H Photo by late September 2005 ([3]).
The full-frame sensor was particularly significant for underwater photography because it restored the full field of view of wide-angle and fisheye lenses that had been cropped by APS-C sensors. As Alex Mustard noted in the announcement discussion, the camera “would be fantastic for Canon UW photographers as it will solve the lack of a fisheye for less $$$ than a 1DS or 1DS Mk2” ([4]). The 5D was the first camera at a sub-1Ds price to provide full 180-degree coverage with popular fisheye lenses ([5]).
The camera also featured a larger and improved image review LCD capable of both luminance and RGB histograms compared with the Canon 20D, and a special low ISO setting of 50 — noted by Alex Mustard as a significant feature for underwater use ([6], [7]).
The camera body was slightly larger than the Canon 20D (152 x 113 x 75 mm vs. 150 x 107 x 75 mm) and would not fit into any existing housings, triggering what Alex Mustard described as a “race” among manufacturers: “Unfortunately for underwater photographers the camera is a new body — a bit larger than the 20D — so it is going to require a new housing. The race is on…” ([8]).
Significance for Underwater Photography
The 5D was a transformative camera for the underwater photography community. Before its release, Canon shooters using APS-C bodies like the 20D had no fisheye lens that could provide 180-degree coverage — a persistent frustration for wide-angle underwater work. The full-frame sensor immediately made the Canon 15mm f/2.8 fisheye and 17-40mm f/4L zoom fully usable underwater without the crop factor narrowing their field of view.
Image quality from the 5D was praised by early adopters. James Wiseman, in his review of the Seacam 5D housing, noted that the 5D “creates sharper images than the 1DmkII — probably because it doesn’t have as strong of an anti-aliasing filter” and described the nearly 13 megapixels as “a real treat” ([9]). Forum user herbko explained the technical basis: the 5D had the same pixel pitch as the 1D Mark II, so noise performance should be at least as good, and Canon appeared to have used a weaker anti-aliasing filter, yielding better per-pixel resolution ([10]).
The camera also handled sunbursts well and focused faster underwater than the 20D with the same lenses, according to reviewer Brian Cripe ([11]).
The significance of full-frame sensors for underwater wide-angle work was a topic of deep technical discussion. Forum user “whitey” summarized: “5D — it’s all about resolution and FULL FRAME. Full frame, in particular, is a Very Good Thing. Many non-Canon shooters seem to have forgotten this point, but it’s actually sort of nice to shoot your 17mm lens at 17mm again” ([12]). However, community members also raised concerns about corner sharpness with dome ports on full-frame sensors, as Julian Scheunemann (jolly) noted the “problem with larger image recording size for underwater is the shallow DOF because we shoot thru simple curved glass” — a new challenge that APS-C users had been insulated from ([13]).
The 5D’s impact extended beyond its immediate generation — it established the precedent that full-frame sensors would eventually become the standard for serious underwater photography, shifting the industry away from the crop-sensor compromises that defined the early digital era. Alex Mustard’s 2006 article “When to Jump” used the 5D’s arrival alongside the Nikon D200 as the context for discussing the perpetual upgrade dilemma in underwater photography ([14]).
Full-Frame vs. Crop Sensor Debate
The 5D’s announcement catalyzed a major community debate about full-frame versus cropped sensors for underwater use. Forum user herbko made the technical case for full-frame: “For a given exposure, a FF chip will catch 2.25 (1.5x1.5) times more light than a 1.5x cropped chip… You’ll still have a cleaner image with the bigger sensor,” effectively arguing that full-frame gave photographers more than one stop advantage in signal-to-noise ratio ([15]).
Luiz Rocha countered that the Nikon D2X was still superior in autofocus, build quality, and ergonomics, noting “if Nikon didn’t have the 10.5 fisheye I would think twice about the Canon” ([16]). Alex Mustard also warned Canon shooters about market dynamics: “despite what impression you may get from the forums, Nikon DSLRs are far more popular than Canon for UW shooting (about 4:1). So housing manufacturers are not going to support every model in the Canon range” ([17]).
The debate also touched on dome port implications. Julian Scheunemann explained that the dome’s virtual image was curved, requiring depth of field to keep corners sharp — and that full-frame sensors were inherently more demanding in this regard than APS-C. However, he noted this did not apply to fisheye lenses, which “focus in a manner the dome’s virtual image is shaped” ([18]).
Viewfinder Advantages
The 5D’s full-frame viewfinder was a significant upgrade for underwater photography. Julian Scheunemann published a comprehensive comparison article in 2007, demonstrating that the 5D’s viewfinder image was substantially larger than APS-C cameras like the Canon 10D, both with standard and enhanced viewfinders. He showed that switching from the 10D (APS-C) to the 5D (full-frame) in a Sealux housing provided a noticeably bigger finder picture, though the enhanced GD viewfinder became “more critical in terms of margin against corner shading” with the larger 5D viewfinder ([19]).
Pre-Announcement Speculation
Rumors of a mid-range full-frame Canon body circulated in the Wetpixel forums before the official announcement. Forum user “Jolly” (Julian) posted a leaked PDF with probable specs on August 9, 2005, sparking a 52-post discussion thread ([20]). Many initially suspected the leak was a hoax — Alex Mustard predicted Canon might use the “3D” name (recalling the EOS 3) or “30D” ([21]). Paul Kay noted the PDF listed “water resistance: NO” and doubted a manufacturer would actually print this ([22]). Shortly before the official announcement, a screenshot of the 5D appeared on the European Canon CPS website before being taken down ([23]).
Eric Cheng broke news on September 3, 2005 that Nexus was developing both a Canon 1D/1Ds Mark II and a 5D housing — significant because Nexus had been entirely Nikon-focused up to that point. Alex Mustard commented: “I think this shows a trend of a real shift of housing manufacturers’ attitude to housing Canon’s DSLR cameras” ([24]).
Alex Mustard predicted that housing manufacturers would be slow to support the camera, noting that “the 5D is expensive and likely to generate low numbers of sales for UW shooting” and estimating it would take about a year for housings to appear. He suggested only Subal and Sea & Sea would likely support it ([25]). In fact, the housing industry responded much faster and more broadly than anticipated.
Housing Availability
The Canon EOS 5D triggered one of the most extensive housing races in UW photography history. By September 2005, forum user “jolly” was already reporting that UK-GERMANY, Sealux, Seacam, Aquatica, and Ikelite were all working on housings ([26]). At least nine manufacturers ultimately produced housings for the camera.
Polycarbonate Housings
- Ikelite — Won the housing race, delivering the first production Canon 5D housing in late 2005. James Wiseman had predicted Ikelite would be first: “Judging on recent form, Ikelite are usually the fastest” ([27]). Reviewed by Wetpixel moderator William Heaton in December 2005, based on the first production housing shipped. Ikelite incorporated Heaton’s feedback into subsequent production units. Reviewer “murderone” praised the housing after a week of diving in Curacao, calling it “excellant” with service “w/o peer” ([28]). The housing was later converted by Fergus Kennedy to accommodate the Canon 5D Mark II, used to shoot what was described as the first underwater video from a 5D Mark II — filmed in the Egyptian Red Sea with a 15mm fisheye and Magic Filter ([29]).
Aluminum Housings
-
Aquatica — First aluminum housing to market. Listed “Coming Soon” on their website by September 2005, prompting immediate community interest. Mauricio Handler of Aquatica confirmed the housing was “in the production mode” ([30]). Forum user Brian Cripe posted photos in February 2006 ([31]) and published a detailed first impressions review in March 2006. The housing was praised for its compact size, excellent engineering, and an easy/secure camera mounting mechanism. Available in silver (standard) or custom colors including black. Rated to greater depths than polycarbonate housings. Provided access to all controls except the print button and multi-controller. Cripe noted the corner sharpness with the Sigma 15mm fisheye was “very good” ([32]).
-
Seacam — Displayed at Boot 2006 in Dusseldorf in January 2006 ([33]). Among the first housings to arrive in the United States, reviewed by James Wiseman in March 2006 after a Wetpixel shark diving trip with Jim Abernethy’s Scuba Adventures in the Bahamas. The housing was smaller and lighter than the Seacam 1DmkII system, with improved ergonomics for the 5D body. Wiseman noted the shutter release position was not optimal for medium-to-small hands, but this was improved with aftermarket Ultralight Control Systems handles. Stephen Frink, Seacam USA distributor, confirmed the shutter release lever could be adjusted via a set screw inside the housing. Alex Mustard, who dived alongside Wiseman on the trip, was “very impressed with the image quality of the 5D and also the quality of finish of the Seacam housing” ([34]). Seacam was also working on a 5D Mark II housing in 2008, expected in Q1 2009 ([35]).
-
Subal — Displayed a 5D housing at Boot 2006 ([36]). Subal was “the only one to have at least a preview version” of a D200 housing at the same show, demonstrating their aggressive early support of both major full-frame and APS-C cameras ([37]). A custom conversion kit was later developed by machinist Bill Reed to allow a Subal C10 (10D housing) to accept the 5D body, with the interchangeable design allowing owners to retain use of the 10D as a backup. The kit (US$450) included a new base tray, transfer pad with stainless steel lever inserts, and button extensions ([38]). Forum user Stewart L. Sy had hoped the 5D might fit in his Subal C10 from the start: “I’ve got a 5D on order. I just hope I can get it to fit into my Subal C10” ([39]).
-
Sealux — Displayed a 5D housing with GD viewfinder at Boot 2006 ([40]). Forum user Julian Scheunemann (jolly), a Sealux user, had called Sealux directly to confirm housing plans before the official announcement, worried that he might need to switch housing systems ([41]).
-
UK-GERMANY — Displayed a 5D housing at Boot 2006 ([42]). Forum user jolly predicted they would be the first 5D housing manufacturer: “My bet: UK-GERMANY will be the first 5D housing. I put three magic filters on that” ([43]). Reviewed by Mark Hoover in March 2007. Two housings were purchased in December 2005 (essentially sight unseen, as UK-Germany had no American distributor). The CNC-machined aluminum housings had such precise fit that backs were interchangeable between units. The housing was compact — approximately 2800 cm3 displacement — and nearly neutral with a dome port setup. All controls were accessible except Direct Print, Erase, and AF Point Selection/Enlarge. The reviewer praised the workmanship and noted manufacturer Uwe Kiehl provided excellent direct customer service, though Eric Cheng expressed concern in the comments about how service would scale without a US distributor ([44]).
-
Nexus — Announced as in development alongside their 1Ds Mark II housing in October 2005 ([45]). Eric Cheng had heard about Nexus plans as early as September 3, 2005, calling it a significant shift since Nexus had been “entirely Nikon focused up to now” ([46]). Displayed at DEMA 2006 by Lee Peterson and Tom Harman of Nexus USA / Marine Camera Distributors. Eric Cheng noted the housing had “no convenient access to the rear dial” and the * button was hard to reach from shooting position. There was no access to the mode dial despite apparent space reserved for one ([47]). In September 2006, Nexus announced fiber optic sync ports with TTL for the Canon 5D, along with a 45-degree Inon viewfinder accessory that could be custom-fitted to the Nexus 5D housing ([48]). James Wiseman commented on the fiber optic announcement with interest, noting the 5D had no pop-up flash, making the implementation particularly curious ([49]).
-
Sea & Sea DX-5D — Announced in April 2006 alongside the DX-D200 housing. Both housings featured a newly designed shutter lever intended to provide half-press indication. The AE/AF lock lever was positioned for thumb access while gripping the handle ([50]). Displayed at DEMA 2006 with TTL Converter C for Canon E-TTL. Eric Cheng noted you could reach the * button but could not reach either the shutter/top command dial or aperture/back command dial from shooting position ([51]). Recalled in January 2007 — serial numbers 055000002—055000174 were recalled for replacement of the multi-selector assembly, which “might fixate or possibly allow minor flooding of the housing through the component o-ring seals.” The retrofit was completed at no charge within 3—5 business days ([52]).
-
Hugyfot — Also produced a housing for the Canon EOS 5D, referenced in multiple forum classified listings ([53]).
-
Easydive LeoR — A universal housing system that listed the Canon EOS 5D among its many supported cameras ([54]).
Lenses and Port Compatibility
The following lenses were documented as used underwater with the 5D:
- Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye — The primary reason many photographers adopted the 5D. Provided full 180-degree coverage on the full-frame sensor. Good corner sharpness at f/8 and above, though vignetting correction was needed at wider apertures ([55]).
- Sigma 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye — Compatible with Aquatica dome ports with no vignetting ([56]).
- Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L — Used with the UK-Germany housing, where the complete system with dome port was only about 200 grams negative ([57]). Stephen Frink tested the Canon 14mm f/2.8L II underwater with his Seacam 1Ds Mark II housing and Superdome port in January 2008, finding dramatic improvement over the original 14mm, which had been “simply unusable in a housing” due to terrible corner performance. The Mark II was “so very much better than the 16-35mm II, no wide-angle shooter using a Canon full frame camera can afford to ignore this lens.” He recommended the PVL25 extension ring for best results ([58]).
- Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM — Popular wide-angle zoom. Required a 35mm extension ring in the Seacam system ([59]). Julian Scheunemann noted the 17-40L was “designed for digital 35mm sensors” and outperformed the older 16-35mm on full-frame ([60]).
- Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L — Available but with notably worse corner performance than the 14mm II, especially at wide apertures. Frink’s tests showed substantial softness at f/2.8 ([61]).
- Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM — Required a 25mm extension ring in the Seacam system ([62]).
- Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 — Used for shark portraits ([63]).
- Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro — Used for macro work ([64]).
- Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Macro — James Wiseman reviewed this lens for use with his full-frame Canon in a Seacam housing, praising its optical quality underwater and macro zoom capability up to 1:1.4 with a Canon 500D diopter ([65]).
Firmware Updates
Canon released a firmware update for the EOS 5D in July 2006. The update corrected communication errors between the 5D and EOS Capture after a certain number of shots, enabled E-TTL flash metering with the ST-E2 Speedlite Transmitter in conjunction with the 580EX Speedlite, and enhanced direct printing to two Canon PIXMA Pro printers ([66]).
Community Discussion
The Canon 5D generated extensive community discussion on the Wetpixel forums:

-
The camera’s announcement also drove discussion in the comments of Wetpixel articles, with Alex Mustard noting “a very active discussion on this camera in the forums — covering a range of issues from how it compares to its rivals, to housing options, to corner sharpness with wide angle and reproduction ratios with macro lenses” ([72]).
-
Multiple classified listings appeared on the Wetpixel forums for Canon EOS 5D housing systems from Subal, Aquatica, Seacam, Hugyfot, and Ikelite, indicating the camera’s sustained popularity in the UW community through the late 2000s.
Successor
The Canon EOS 5D Mark II was announced in September 2008, featuring a 21-megapixel full-frame sensor and full 1080p HD video recording — the first DSLR with this capability. Priced at US$2,699, it continued the 5D line’s position as the affordable full-frame option. Underwater photographers were hopeful the Mark II would fit into existing 5D housings ([73]). Early adopter Fergus Kennedy demonstrated this was partially possible, converting his Ikelite 5D housing to fit the Mark II and shooting the first known underwater video from the 5D Mark II in the Egyptian Red Sea ([74]).
