Biography
Mary Lynn Price is an underwater videographer, filmmaker, and the creator and curator of DiveFilm, a pioneering underwater video podcast platform. She served as a Wetpixel Moderator and played a central role in bringing underwater filmmaking to mainstream audiences through the iTunes podcast ecosystem. Her work combined underwater cinematography with marine conservation advocacy, and she was among the earliest proponents of using video podcasting as a medium for ocean awareness.
DiveFilm Podcast
Price founded DiveFilm.com, which became the premier underwater video podcast destination. In May 2006, Wetpixel announced an official partnership with DiveFilm for video podcasts, making underwater films available through free iTunes subscriptions ([1]). The partnership featured video by Price and other Wetpixel members including Paul Wags, Eric Hanauer, and Steve Douglas.
In January 2006, DiveFilm Podcast Video was selected by Apple as one of 84 “Featured Video Podcasts” on the iTunes Music Store — the first and only diving-related video podcast to achieve this distinction ([2]). Price actively rallied the Wetpixel community to subscribe and help maintain the listing.
By September 2006, Apple again spotlighted DiveFilm Podcast Video among its “Featured Video Podcasts, TV & Film,” alongside National Geographic Video Shorts and HBO Documentary Films ([3]). Price was quoted commenting on the latest episode, “Video Lives” by Paul and Kelly Wags.
In November 2006, Wetpixel featured Price’s own episode, “Humpback Whales of Tonga” (Episode 32), with footage by Price, Chuck Nicklin, Roger Norman, and Steve Perez ([4]).
By March 2012, DiveFilm HD had reached its 100th high-definition podcast episode with “Befriending Giants” by Shawn Heinrichs. Price was identified as “DiveFilm HD podcast curator and Wetpixel Moderator” ([5]).
In December 2012, DiveFilm HD Video Podcasts were selected for inclusion in the “iTunes Podcasts Best of 2012” list ([6]). Price credited the contributing underwater filmmakers, including numerous Wetpixel members.
In June 2014, DiveFilm launched a new stereoscopic 3D podcast on iTunes, featuring 3D videos by Bob Cranston, Price, Al Caudullo, and others ([7]).
Filmmaking and Expeditions
In April 2007, Price participated in an exploratory dive expedition to Clipperton Island aboard the Nautilus Explorer. The trip included Mexican scientists studying the island’s marine life. Price documented the expedition, noting the near-absence of sharks that Conrad Limbaugh had described as abundant in 1956, likely due to overfishing. She shared footage of healthy coral, free-swimming morays, Clipperton Angels, and miles of longline fishing equipment ([8]). Drew Wong commented on the thread, noting he had previously visited the island.
Price also contributed to discussions about the Canon 5D Mark II for underwater HD video production, sharing raw footage with community members for editing workflow testing ([9]).
Community Role
As a Wetpixel Moderator, Price bridged the underwater filmmaking and online community worlds. She was an early advocate for using Apple TV and other emerging platforms to distribute underwater video content ([10]). She also started discussions about shark conservation through video podcasting ([11]).
