Biography
Howard Hall is a San Diego-based natural history filmmaker whose career spans the entire arc of underwater cinema technology — from 16mm film in the 1970s through 1,200-lb IMAX 3D cameras to RED digital cinema at resolutions up to 8K. One World One Ocean named him one of their “Ocean Heroes,” describing him as someone who “has been capturing amazing underwater images since the 1970’s, inspiring millions with his work” ([2]).
Hall works with his wife Michele Hall (credited as co-producer and sometimes director on most films) and a longtime crew of San Diego-based veterans including Bob Cranston (died June 2, 2016), Mark Thurlow, Dave Forsythe, Peter Kragh, Richard Hermann, and Lance Milbrand ([3]). He began his career filming sharks in the 1970s and worked on Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom in the 1980s ([4]).
He co-authored “Successful Underwater Photography” with Brian Skerry, with a book signing at the Gates booth at DEMA 2002 ([5]). In 2014, writer Brian Lam profiled Hall in The New Yorker in an article titled “The Life Aquatic with Howard Hall,” highlighting his time filming with “Pig” (the IMAX underwater camera) in West Papua ([6]).
Hall is known for favoring the Southern California kelp forest as a filming location. He once commented: “Finally, people often ask where my favorite diving is. Well, on a good day, nothing beats the Southern California kelp forest” ([7]).
Key Films
IMAX Productions
- Into the Deep (IMAX 3D, early 1990s) — The first IMAX 3D underwater film, filmed with a 1,200-lb camera. Reunited the filmmaking team for later IMAX projects. Featured California sea lions at San Miguel Island, where each 7-minute IMAX film load cost more than $20,000 to purchase, process, and print ([8], [9])
- Deep Sea 3D (IMAX, 2006) — Narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, with an original score by Danny Elfman. Michele Hall co-produced, Toni Myers produced. Directed by Hall, who quipped about the title: “Since none of the footage was shot below 130 feet, I suggested NOT SO DEEP 3D would be a more appropriate title, but that suggestion was overruled.” Shot at eight worldwide locations including the Bahamas, Sea of Cortez, Flower Gardens, British Columbia, Catalina Island, Monterey, North Carolina, and Kona, Hawaii. Steve Drogin called it “their crowning achievement,” noting that “IMAX Productions partnered with Warner Brothers to bring to the screen the highest budget underwater film ever shot in this format.” Crew included Bob Cranston, Mark Thurlow, Dave Forsythe, Peter Kragh, Richard Hermann, Lance Milbrand, and John Ellerbrock, with an onscreen cameo by Marty Snyderman ([10], [11], [12])
- Under the Sea 3D (IMAX, 2009) — The IMAX camera runs for only three minutes before needing a film change ([13]). Shortlisted at the Blue Ocean Film Festival 2010 ([14])
- Humpback Whales (IMAX, MacGillivray Freeman production) — Hall spent over 8 weeks in Tonga in 2012, shooting 70mm film and Epic 5K digital footage for this feature ([15])
- Secrets of the Sea (IMAX, working title, announced 2019) — A collaboration between Howard Hall Productions and Jonathan Bird’s Blue World, due for release in 2021. By the time of announcement, footage had been captured in California’s Channel Islands, Mexico, and the Philippines, with filming continuing through 2020 ([16])
PBS Nature Films
- Seasons of the Sea (PBS Nature, 1990) — Shot on 16mm. Best of Show, Wildscreen 1990; Festival Choice, Jackson Hole 1991. Remastered for Amazon Prime in 2017. Hall later replaced many original shots with HD images while retaining the original narration ([17], [18])
- Shadows in a Desert Sea (PBS Nature, 1992) — Shot on standard 16mm film, mastered to Digital Betacam. Won Best Cinematography at Wildscreen 1992 and Grand Prize at Antibes 1992. Narrated by George Page. Later up-converted to 16x9 HD with many original shots replaced by HD footage. Available on Amazon Prime Video in 1080p ([19])
Short Films and Digital Cinema
- Ocean Requiem — Created as a “subtle indictment of over-fishing and gill nets,” shot exclusively on HDCAM with a Sony 900 camera. Original music by Alan Williams. Featured as HD Episode 6 of the DiveFilm HD Podcast in 2007, produced in association with Wetpixel. One commenter said he watched it “100 times and I still get goose bumps” ([20], [21])
- Maldives in RED (2010) — 4-minute RED ONE 4K compilation from the Maldives. Screened at SDUFEX 2010, where “it started with a nondescript coral landscape that had people wondering. When a whale shark suddenly appeared underneath the camera they realized why” ([22], [23])
- The Blue Ocean in RED (2010) — Selection of 2010 filming projects, all shot with RED ONE and Nikon lenses. Footage from the Maldives, Alaska, California, Cocos Island, and Mexico ([24])
- Sperm Whale (Dominica) (2011) — RED 4K footage of sperm whale encounter in Dominica, featuring divers Douglas Seifert and Andrew Armour. Eric Cheng noted the footage demonstrated why large rigs produce inherently more stable footage than housed DSLRs ([25])
- Leviathan (2012/2013) — Short film of humpback whales from Tonga, shot in 5K with RED Epic and Tokina 10-17mm lens. Cited help from Whale Watch Vava’u and Endangered Encounters ([26], [27])
- Raja — Most recent DiveFilm podcast when DiveFilm HD was selected for iTunes Best of 2012 ([28])
- California Dreaming (2014) — Filmed entirely within 100 miles of Los Angeles, originally made for a Reef Check fundraiser. Jonathan Bird commented: “That’s why Howard is the master!” ([29])
- Angel Ray (2014) — Medley of manta ray footage shot in 4K, 5K, and HD with Sony 900 ([30])
- The Great Blue (2014) — Excerpt from Seasons of the Sea with original SD footage replaced by 4K and 5K digital cinema captures, part of Hall’s ongoing effort to rejuvenate older films ([31])
- The Bulls of BAD (2015) — Bull sharks of Beqa Lagoon, Fiji, shot in 5K. Hall noted the site sometimes gets around 100 bull sharks at once, so numerous they chase tiger sharks away ([32])
- Baskers (2015) — Basking sharks filmed at the Isle of Mull, Scotland ([33])
- Four Times the Philippines (2017) — Screened at SDUFEX 2017 ([34])
- Atlantis (2017) — Short film from Atlantis Resorts in Puerto Galera and Dumaguete, Philippines. Notably featured macro subjects, a departure from the duo’s usual large-creature focus. Music by Shie Rozow ([35])
- Threshers (2018) — Pelagic thresher sharks at Malapascua Island, Philippines, shot in 8K with RED Helium ([36])
- Dreams of Atlantis (2018) — Two weeks of diving at Atlantis resorts in Puerto Galera and Dumaguete, captured exclusively in 8K on RED ([37])
- Wild Windows: Whales (2018) — Hour-long compilation featuring humpback, sperm, and blue whales ([38])
- Forest of the Sea (2018) — Part of the “Wild Windows” series, an hour of kelp forest footage from the US West Coast between Mexico and Alaska ([39])
- Whale Song (2018) — Humpbacks in French Polynesia, shot in 8K with RED Helium ([40])
Other Film Credits
- Australian Giant Cuttlefish — Featured in the Sensational Seas 2 DVD compilation, singled out as a standout alongside works by other filmmakers ([41])
- Discovery Channel — Filmed in the Socorro Islands for a Discovery Channel hour special with Peter Benchley. Sculptor Gar Waterman recalled Hall “swimming like hell with the camera to keep up with the manta and get the shot, which, of course, he did and it made a wonderful sequence” ([42])
Gates Partnership
Hall’s collaboration with Gates Underwater Products defined the digital cinema underwater housing category. The partnership traces back to Gates founder Ellwyn Gates and continued under John Ellerbrock.
Co-Design of the DEEP RED Housing
In 2007, Gates announced the DEEP RED housing for the RED ONE camera, co-developed with Hall. He called the RED “a landmark in motion picture capture, as different from video as video is from film and better than both” ([43]).
John Ellerbrock approached Hall about collaborating on the design. Hall specified six criteria: a three-section housing (front port, center section with camera mount and controls, rear bell); fingertip-accessible controls for run-switch, zoom, aperture, and focus; full menu access underwater; compatibility with lenses from digital still camera lenses to Ultra Primes; depth rating to 450 feet; and maximum compactness. Hall praised three innovations as “absolutely brilliant”: a waterproof multi-function joystick replicating the RED ONE’s rear control, a universal lens gear arrangement accepting nearly any lens from Nikon to Arri Ultra Primes, and a modular trim weight system with slots on housing exterior ([44]).
Hall first used the DEEP RED extensively during a two-week expedition in Southeast Alaska aboard the Nautilus Explorer in July 2009, shooting with Nikon 16-85mm and Tokina 10-17mm lenses behind an 8-inch glass dome port with anti-reflection coatings. He found the housing weighed 10-20% less than his Sony 900 system ([45]). Eric Cheng published high-resolution TIFF frame grabs from Hall’s RED ONE on Wetpixel, converted to JPGs for download ([46]).
Subsequent Gates Housings
- Gates DEEP EPIC — Used for Lembeh Strait creatures (2012), Cocos Island footage, and humpback whale filming in Tonga ([47])
- Gates DEEP DRAGON (2013) — Housing for RED EPIC DRAGON 6K, shipping at $18,280 US retail. Featured REDMOTE controller for full camera control underwater and integrated tripod legs ([48])
- Gates Deep Pulsar/Deep Atom (2011) — 3D beam splitter housing for underwater stereo cinematography, developed with input from Hall and Bob Cranston, whose “3D experience is lengthy and legendary with such 3D films as Into the Deep, Under the Sea 3D and Deep Sea 3D” ([49])
- RED Helium 8K — Used from 2018 onward for Threshers, Whale Song, Dreams of Atlantis, and other productions ([50], [51])
Seal Check Innovation
Hall and Bob Cranston pioneered vacuum seal checking for underwater housings in the mid-1990s, using the technique on their IMAX Mark II camera housings. Gates later commercialized this as the “Seal Check” system, first displayed at DEMA 2007 as a packaged product retailing for $1,000. John Ellerbrock noted that the concept traces back to Lamar Boren and Jordy Klein Sr. in the 1960s ([52], [53])
Conservation and Writing
Tagging Essay
In December 2014, Hall published “Tagging: A Celebration of Science” on Wetpixel — a lengthy satirical essay critiquing scientific animal tagging practices. Drawing on decades of personal experience, Hall described encounters with fluorescent-paint-tagged elephant seals that ruined film shoots, explosive harpoon-mounted transmitters fired at gray whales in San Ignacio lagoon, crossbow biopsy sampling of humpbacks on the Silver Bank, and the hot-branding of thousands of California sea lion pups. The essay’s dry wit masked serious concerns about the aesthetic and welfare impacts of tagging on marine wildlife. Norbert Wu praised the piece in the comments, calling it “excellent” and urging readers to recognize the irony. A follow-up article noted that grey seals had learned to use acoustic fish tags as a “dinner bell” to hunt more efficiently — validating Hall’s concerns about unintended consequences ([54], [55])
Guest Articles on Wetpixel
Hall wrote one confirmed guest article for Wetpixel — the essay “Tagging: A Celebration of Science” — published through Adam Hanlon’s editor account. Several of his film releases (Leviathan, Angel Ray, California Dreaming, Forest of the Sea, and others) were also posted by Hanlon as news items about Hall’s work.
Professional Practices
Hall participated in Wetpixel’s “Asks the Pros: Backup Strategies” feature alongside other leading underwater photographers ([56]). He also endorsed the book “Underwater Digital Video Made Easy” by Steve Barsky, Lance Milbrand, and Mark Thurlow (the latter a regular member of Hall’s film crew), writing that “seldom has such an elite group of authors come together to produce a text for the sport diving industry” ([57]).
Key Collaborators
- Michele Hall — Wife and co-producer on virtually all productions. Co-directed and co-produced IMAX films. Also an accomplished photographer in her own right, participating in the 2019 Atlantis ImageMakers event ([58])
- Bob Cranston — Hall’s closest collaborator for decades, died June 2, 2016. Hall wrote the memorial published on Wetpixel. Cranston shot 3D footage in California using Gates DEEP EPIC housing. The two pioneered vacuum seal checking together ([59], [60])
- Mark Thurlow — Longtime crew member who directed underwater videography for “making of” videos on Hall’s IMAX productions. Co-authored “Underwater Digital Video Made Easy” ([61])
- John Ellerbrock — President of Gates Underwater Products, collaborated on housing designs and served as MC at SDUFEX. Part of the Deep Sea 3D crew ([62], [63])
- Marty Snyderman — Fellow San Diego filmmaker and close friend. Hall and Snyderman share a birthday and celebrated together at Atlantis Dumaguete ([64])
- Shie Rozow — Composer who scored multiple Hall productions including Atlantis and the Dominica sperm whale film ([65], [66])
- Alan Williams — Composer for Leviathan, Ocean Requiem, and other works ([67], [68])
