Overview
Seacam was founded by Harald Hordosch in Voitsberg, southern Austria in 1989. Hordosch received his diving license in 1972 and began housing cameras, eventually deciding he could improve on the European housings then available from Hugyfot and Subal. The first housing series was for the Yashica AF camera ([1]).
Seacam is a family-owned company with 100% European production, known for extremely high build quality and elegant design. All housings are machined from solid blocks of aluminum alloy and finished in their distinctive “Seacam Silver” electroplated coating, which is described as “mechanically densified” and exceptionally resilient — users reported that the external surface could be dragged across reef rock without scratching ([2]). The interior of every housing is lined with black flocked material that absorbs water intrusion and reduces internal reflections, and all housings include integrated moisture alarms with both audible and LED indicators ([3]).
Seacam distinguishes between “Pro” and “Semi-Pro” housing designations based on standard equipment. Pro housings (e.g., F5, D1X, EOS 1V, EOS 1Ds) come standard with moisture alarm and MSC switch, while Semi-Pro housings (e.g., F100, D100, Fuji S2) offer these as options ([4]).
Harald Hordosch’s design philosophy emphasizes that clean, elegant, precise designs provide an intuitive platform for enhancing a photographer’s creativity, and that photographers caught up in technical complexity are unable to concentrate on the creative process ([5]). Unlike most other housing manufacturers, Seacam traditionally chooses not to issue press releases about new products ([6]).
US Distribution
Stephen Frink served as the primary US distributor through Stephen Frink Photographic (later SeacamUSA) in Key Largo, Florida, beginning in 2002. Frink’s 2002 field journal of the Seacam Nikon D1X housing was one of the landmark early articles on Wetpixel and served as both a review and an operator’s manual ([7]). Frink wrote detailed field journals for multiple Seacam products, authored port matching and lens testing guides, and represented the company at DEMA Shows alongside Hordosch for many years ([8]).
Additional distributors were appointed over the years, including Scubacam in Singapore (2008) ([9]) and Seacam China ([10]).
Viewfinder System
One of Seacam’s most distinctive features is the interchangeable viewfinder system, which includes four different viewfinders that can be exchanged without tools. The S180 provides magnified 1:1 viewing through a 180-degree swivel, while the S45 offers 45-degree angled viewing. Both were available for all Seacam housings and provided a significant advantage in the early digital era when precise framing through an optical viewfinder was essential ([11], [12]).
Housing Lines
Silver Line (Flagship)
The Silver line represents Seacam’s premium housings for professional cameras. In 2008, Seacam introduced a new design philosophy with the Nikon D3 housing — the first large Seacam housing machined from a solid block of aluminum (previously only smaller SLR housings were fully machined). This housing introduced a titanium latch system with 60 kg of spring force, tested to 300,000 cycles, and all controls were repositioned closer to the handles for improved ergonomics. These design elements carried forward into all subsequent housing designs ([13]).
Key features of the Silver line include:
- CNC-machined from saltwater-proof, twice-hardened, high-value anodized aluminum alloy
- Titanium Safety Lock fastening system
- Double O-ring sealing on all shafts and press buttons
- Helicoil threads for durability
- Compatible with the full Seacam port system and viewfinders
Compact Line (Mirrorless)
Introduced in 2016 with the Sony A7 II R/S housing, the Compact line brought Seacam quality to mirrorless camera systems. These housings retained full compatibility with Seacam’s port system while being significantly smaller and lighter ([14]).
Prelude Line (Entry-Level)
Launched in December 2010, the Prelude line was designed to provide Seacam build quality at approximately 40% lower cost, marketed as “Where quality meets affordability” and “A 100% Seacam housing for 40% less cost.” The initial models supported the Canon EOS 60D and Nikon D7000. Prelude housings were manufactured from the same CNC-machined aluminum with the Seacam Silver coating and were fully compatible with all Seacam ports, viewfinders, and strobes. They offered fewer camera controls than the Silver line but covered the essential functions ([15], [16]). A Version 2 of the Prelude D7000 added additional controls based on user feedback ([17]). Later Prelude models supported the Nikon D750 and Canon EOS 7D Mark II ([18]).
Strobes
Seacam’s strobe design philosophy has centered on circular flash tubes, which produce a more even spread of light than linear tubes but require more energy and larger battery packs. This resulted in powerful, warm-toned strobes (typically around 4300-4500K color temperature) that excelled for wide-angle photography ([19]).
Seaflash 250 Digital
Introduced at the Antibes Festival in November 2005, the Seaflash 250 Digital was Seacam’s first dedicated digital strobe. It supported Nikon i-TTL and Canon E-TTL with 250 watt-seconds of power, 120-degree coverage, selectable bulbs for two color temperatures (4300K and 5200K), and manual power settings in 7+5 steps. The non-replaceable internal battery provided 190 full-power flashes with a 0.3-5 second recycle time. It included a digital multi-function display with automatic dimming, underexposure alarms, a 6-hour LED pilot/modeling light, and automatic optical slave mode ([20], [21]). TTL testing by Stephen Frink demonstrated impressive underwater TTL accuracy ([22]).
Seaflash 150 Digital
Announced at DEMA 2007, the Seaflash 150 was a more compact strobe with the same operation as the 250 but significantly shorter and lighter, comparable in size and weight (2.65 lb / 1.2 kg) to the popular Ikelite DS-125. Critically, it featured a removable battery — essential for air travel. It shipped with a diffuser and optional red light filter and graduated ND filter. The 150 was available in both E-TTL and iTTL versions. Alex Mustard called it potentially “the strobe I have been waiting for,” though its price (~1,800 EUR, approximately 3x the DS-125) was noted as a drawback ([23], [24], [25]). A detailed review by Drew Wong analyzed its E-TTL performance in depth ([26]).
Seaflash 60D
Introduced circa 2018-2019, the 60D was Seacam’s first compact macro strobe, addressing airline weight limits. It offered 60 Ws output, 130-degree beam angle, 4400K color temperature, and was powered by 4 AA batteries rather than proprietary packs. At 150 x 75mm and 550g, it was significantly smaller than other Seacam strobes and designed to fit between the housing handles and a macro port ([27]).
Seaflash 160 Digital
Announced in December 2019, the Seaflash 160 Digital featured both electrical and fiber optic triggering, 160 Ws output at 4500K, high-speed sync, an OLED display that rotates for correct viewing angle, and a 250-lumen spotting light. Powered via a NiMH battery pack ([28]). Adam Hanlon’s field report noted strong performance after extended testing delayed by COVID-19 travel restrictions ([29]).
Ports and Optical Accessories
Superdome
The Seacam Superdome was their largest dome port, designed for wide-angle lenses. It was updated in 2008 with a larger bore size to accommodate thick lenses like the Nikon 14-24mm, black internal flocking to reduce reflections, dual O-ring sealing, and a 600-foot depth rating. Existing Superdomes could be retrofitted ([30]). In 2015, Seacam introduced the Special Superdome (SSD) with an even larger inlet for the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens ([31]).
Wet Diopters
Introduced in November 2005, Seacam’s wet diopters were custom-designed for their macro ports with an O-ring friction-fit system. After field testing by Stephen Frink in St. Vincent comparing them to the Backscatter MacroMate, the initial #2 was dropped and only the #4 was released ($295). A more powerful “Wet Two” diopter was subsequently introduced based on field testing feedback ([32], [33]).
MIP80 Macro Port and MIP1 Lens
Released in 2014, the MIP80 port had a narrow profile for easier lighting positioning on close subjects. The MIP1 achromatic wet macro lens provided approximately 2x magnification and could be stacked without an adapter ([34]).
Strobe Color Adaptors
Seacam also produced strobe color adaptors, addressing the tradeoff between warm color temperatures (which produce better blues in underwater images) and strobe power. Along with Ikelite and Subtronic, Seacam produced warm-output strobes around 4500K ([35]).
Nikonos RS Lens Conversions
In a notable engineering feat, Seacam offered conversions of legendary Nikonos RS lenses for use with modern Nikon DSLRs and Seacam housings. The Nikonos RS series were the only lenses specifically designed for underwater use. Harald Hordosch completely stripped the original lenses, re-housed them, and used the original glass dome and bezel as ports. When Nikon declined to supply updated electronic circuitry, Hordosch reprogrammed and modified the existing RS boards himself ([36]).
Conversions offered:
- R-UW AF Fisheye-Nikkor 13mm f/2.8 — Shown at ADEX 2014 ([37])
- R-UW AF 20-35mm — Available by 2019 ([38])
- R-UW AF 28mm — Announced October 2019 ([39])
Remote Photography System
Seacam developed a comprehensive remote photography system, first shown at DEMA 2007. The system included an electronic viewfinder (replacing the optical viewfinder), a remote monitor with waterproof battery, a pole with trigger button, monitor glasses (VR goggles), and an underwater tripod. It was the first time a manufacturer designed a complete integrated remote photography solution. In 2008, a simplified “Power Handle” version was introduced at half the cost, eliminating the need for the full remote monitor unit ([40], [41]).
Specialty and Cinema Housings
3D Video Housing
In 2012, Seacam unveiled a 3D beam-splitter housing holding two Canon C300 cameras at right angles, with adjustable inter-axis and convergence points. The system was featured on the Canon Professional Network and used by filmmaker Roberto Rinaldi with modified Canon EF lenses from 14mm wide-angle to 50mm macro. It included 3D-assist Panasonic monitors for real-time stereographic evaluation underwater ([42], [43]).
Nikon D4 Olympics Housing
In 2012, a Seacam D4 housing was configured for use at the Olympics with external power connections, LAN connection, and 10-pin remote control for a remote pan-and-tilt head. Producer Neil Lucas (formerly of BBC Natural History Unit, known for the under-ice timelapse in BBC’s Life) used the system for entirely remote underwater shooting ([44]).
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Housing
In 2020, Seacam released a cinema housing for the Blackmagic Design Pocket 4K and 6K cameras, with internal space for an extended battery pack and external SSD, plus HDMI 2.0 output ([45]).
Atomos Ninja V Housing
Shipped in 2022, the housing for the Atomos Ninja V and V+ recorder/monitors was rated to 80 meters with HDMI in and battery accommodation up to NP-F970 size. Priced at 2,450 EUR ([46]).
Nikon KeyMission 360 Housing
In 2017, Seacam produced a small, robust housing for the Nikon KeyMission 360 action camera, rated to 200 meters ([47]).
Other Innovations
