Biography

Martin Edge is the author of The Underwater Photographer (Focal Press / Routledge) — the most discussed instructional book in the Wetpixel community, mentioned in 220+ forum threads and routinely recommended as the single best resource for underwater photographers ([2]). Adam Hanlon described him as having “boundless and infectious enthusiasm” and “one of those rare people that are prepared to share his extensive knowledge completely selflessly with pretty much anyone” ([3]).

Early life and entry into diving

Born in landlocked Staffordshire, England, “with no interest in diving” and from a family “devoid of anyone artistic, either musicians or painters,” Martin joined the police force aged 19 in 1974. He married Sylvia in 1976, and in 1977 they moved with work to Dorset on the south coast of England. A fellow police officer suggested he try diving: “These were the days before widespread diving certification, we just went in and I loved it. I was hooked and Sylv and I joined a local dive club” ([4]).

First camera and early equipment

His Vice Squad partner was an avid land photographer who taught him f-stops and persuaded him to rent a Nikonos III for a trip to Minorca. The day before departure, he visited Peter Rowlands’ Ocean Optics shop, then near Battersea power station in London, and hired an Oceanic 2000 flashgun. Rowlands suggested settings of f/8 at 1/60th. When the compressor in Minorca broke, he spent the week snorkelling — “I got my slides developed and they all came out. I was off” ([5]).

He subsequently acquired an extension tube bought directly from Stephen Frink in Key Largo in 1982 (“the first and only time I have met him”), a Subawider wide-angle supplementary lens from Peter Rowlands, an Oceanic 2003 strobe, and borrowed £500 from his mother to buy a secondhand Nikonos 15mm lens ([6]).

Competition success and BSoUP

His first major competition success came at the Brighton Underwater Film Festival in 1983, where his picture of a shrimp in an anemone appeared “in the winners list flanked by pictures taken by Flip Schulke and Jacques Cousteau. That was a wow moment.” He discovered BSoUP in 1983 and drove up to monthly meetings; at his first meeting, Brian Pitkin welcomed him and Georgette Douwma won the monthly Focus On competition. He won BSoUP’s “Best Beginner” award in 1985 ([7]).

Heroes and influences

Martin credits the vibrant British underwater photography scene of the early 1980s for his development. His heroes included Pete Rowlands, Steve Burchill, Pete Scoones, and Mike Valentine. Valentine — later an underwater cameraman for major films including Star Wars, Bond, Bourne, and Indiana Jones — was particularly encouraging: after Brighton 1983, Valentine “walked the whole length of the dome at Brighton with me to see my picture. And he was really enthusiastic. You don’t forget something like that” ([8]).

Audio-visual presentations

Martin rose to prominence on the international stage in the late 1980s through innovative six-projector audio-visual slide shows, created with AV expert Jim Eldridge. His daughter Katie was born with cerebral palsy, and Martin recalls how working on the AVs helped pass evenings between hospital visits. Their first AV, “Sea Of Dreams” (based on Red Sea photos), received a “spontaneous standing ovation” at BSoUP — described in the BSoUP newsletter as unique. The follow-up, “Imaginations” (set in the Maldives), premiered at Brighton in 1987, following Stan Waterman on stage. Kurt Amsler was “very encouraging.” As the first to create such productions with underwater pictures, they were invited to film festivals across Europe. At a festival in Antwerp, Martin and Jim met Hans and Lotte Hass at the Gala Dinner — “the four of us spent a delightful evening together. In fact we were almost inseparable from that moment on at the event” ([9]).

Teaching Philosophy

Martin’s teaching methodology centers on his “Think and Consider” system — a structured approach to making creative and technical decisions underwater. As Alex Mustard observed in his 2006 review: “Martin’s strength as a photography teacher is that he is not an instinctive photographer. His images are the result of analysis, planning and calculated execution. He understands better than most why his images work, and when they don’t why they have failed” ([10]).

Key principles include:

His recommended starting exposure settings — f/8, 1/125s — became known in the community as the “Martin Edge Setting,” referenced by professional photographers including in Wetpixel’s “Asks the Pros” series ([15]).

Teaching and Workshops

Martin offers one-to-one courses from his home near the south coast of England, typically using a hotel pool in Bournemouth. Forum members who attended consistently praised the experience. Alex Mustard’s girlfriend took a course and found it “very useful. Highly recommended” ([16]). One attendee described how Martin researched his compact camera (Olympus SP350) before the session and “knew its capabilities probably better than I did” ([17]).

He also led overseas workshops, including Red Sea liveaboard trips with his wife Sylvia as co-host ([18]), trips to Misool ([19]), and a workshop in Ambon, Indonesia in March 2014 hosted by Maluku Divers ([20]).

The Underwater Photographer

The book Jim Church called the standard that “will only be surpassed when Martin writes a third edition” ([21]). Each edition has been launched at a BSoUP meeting, continuing a tradition since the first edition in 1995 ([22]).

Critical reception

The 3rd edition won DIVER Award 2006 — Publication of the Year (voted by readers of the UK’s Diver Magazine) ([28]). The book was described as “seriously comprehensive” by Mustard, who noted it could “clearly serve as a faithful reference manual” while remaining “easy reading” thanks to Martin’s “enthusiastic, personal and accessible style” ([29]).

Adam Hanlon’s review of the 5th edition concluded: “If you are starting out as an underwater photographer… this book (along with Alex Mustard’s Underwater Photography Masterclass) may well be the best two purchases you can make” ([30]). The 4th edition’s release generated a 165-reply forum thread spanning months, with community members eagerly tracking shipping dates across multiple countries ([31]).

Known issues

Multiple reviewers noted proofreading errors across editions. Steve Williams diplomatically observed that “the publisher has not really covered themselves in glory” regarding the 5th edition ([32]). Forum members also identified typos and a possible strobe direction error in the 4th edition ([33]).

Partnership with Alex Mustard

Martin has a long-standing teaching partnership with Alex Mustard, who described Edge as “the master of teaching underwater photography who has helped countless photographers not just grasp the basics, but excel all the way to the top” ([34]). Their collaboration includes:

Photography Practice

Equipment and techniques

During his 2014 Ambon workshop, Martin shot with a Nikon 105mm macro lens, experimenting with extreme bokeh backgrounds at f/5.6 and lower, and combining a Retra Prime snoot with soft fill flash from a second strobe. He noted that his preferred bokeh starting point is f/8 ([43]).

His creative repertoire includes snooting, inward lighting (pointing strobes back toward the photographer — “you have to remember to close your eyes”), motion blur, and deliberate overexposure for creative effect. He demonstrated using the vignette tool in Lightroom 3 to enhance technically overexposed images ([44]).

Approach to image-making

Martin is famously self-critical, noting imperfections even in his best work — “the sand isn’t quite the right color or that little fish doesn’t belong in the frame.” This drive to improve is core to his teaching: “Go and play, set dives aside to be wild, free and silly” — and “practise and make plenty of space for some ‘play time’” ([45], [46]).

He contributed to Wetpixel’s 2014 feature on black and white underwater photography alongside Stephen Frink, Alex Mustard, Kurt Amsler, and others ([47]).

Competition Judging

Martin served as a judge for numerous major underwater photography competitions:

Ocean Art (Underwater Photography Guide)

Underwater Photographer of the Year (UPY)

BIUPC (British and Irish Underwater Photography Championship)

BSoUP/Diver Print Competition

Other Professional Activities

Ocean Optics Underwater Photography Stage (2009)

Martin consulted on the design of what is believed to be the world’s first purpose-designed set for teaching and practicing underwater photography. Located at The Underwater Studio (the filming tank used for motion pictures including The Bourne Supremacy, Bond, Harry Potter, and Star Wars), the set was developed in consultation with Martin and marine biologist Jamie Oliver, with final design by Mark Koekemoer of Ocean Optics. It featured an artificial Caribbean coral reef, a sunken cruiser, and a 4K cinema lamp replicating daylight at 30°C water temperature ([59]).

Speaking engagements

Martin spoke at underwater photography events internationally, including a presentation on lighting techniques for the Western Australia Underwater Photographic Society in Perth (October 2008) ([60]).

Personal Life

Martin’s wife Sylvia accompanies him on workshops and trips. Forum participants praised them both as “charming” hosts ([61]). Their daughter Katie was born with cerebral palsy ([62]). The 4th edition of The Underwater Photographer was described as involving “his wife and son” alongside collaborators ([63]).

Timeline

Community Discussion

The Wetpixel forums contain multiple threads dedicated to Martin Edge:

Community member “sterlingz” summarized Edge’s impact: “Martin Edge was one of my main inspirations early on, back in the film days before there was a Wetpixel. The early editions of The Underwater Photographer were the best resource out there, and really provided the foundation for my entry into the craft” ([110]).
