Biography

Graham Abbott is a professional dive guide and expedition leader based in Indonesia, specializing in custom diving trips for underwater photographers, filmmakers, and marine life enthusiasts. He operates Diving4Images, a dive guiding service that runs expeditions throughout the Indonesian archipelago, with a particular focus on Raja Ampat, the Bird’s Head Seascape, Ambon, Halmahera, the Banda Sea, and other remote Indonesian dive destinations. His deep knowledge of Indonesian dive sites and marine life made him a sought-after guide for both professional photographers and dedicated enthusiasts.

Abbott is not primarily a photographer himself — he describes himself as “really a specialist dive guide for photographers, film makers and marine life enthusiasts,” noting that if he were to carry a large camera rig, he would be unable to find as many subjects for his clients ([1]). He typically carries only a small pocket-sized camera, which he uses only occasionally.

Role in the Wetpixel Community

Graham Abbott’s involvement with Wetpixel bridges the professional dive guiding world and the underwater photography community. He is mentioned in 14 Wetpixel articles — an exceptionally high number for a non-staff community member — reflecting his connections to major figures in the underwater photography world.

Wetpixel Expeditions with Eric Cheng

Abbott’s most significant Wetpixel contribution was as expedition leader for the Wetpixel Ultimate Indonesia Expeditions in partnership with Eric Cheng. These were multi-week chartered liveaboard trips aboard the luxury vessel Seven Seas, designed specifically for serious underwater photographers:

Connection to David Doubilet

Abbott guided David Doubilet through the Bird’s Head Seascape for a major National Geographic feature published in September 2007. Eric Cheng noted that “guide Graham Abbott… led Doubilet to the same area the week before we went” on the 2007 Fak-Fak expedition ([5]).

Marine Species Discovery

In 2013, Abbott’s sharp eye for marine life led to the discovery of a probable new species. He shared a photograph of an unidentified goby taken in Ambon with Anna DeLoach (of BlennyWatcher fame), who was about to depart on a trip to the area. The group subsequently found many of the fish living among Lacy Bryozoa in Ambon harbor. Images were sent to Dr. Gerry Allen, who confirmed it was likely an undescribed species and possibly a new genus. Abbott later reported finding the same species in Alor as well ([6]).

Underwater Tribe Podcast

Abbott was featured as a guest on the Underwater Tribe Diving and Adventure Podcast, hosted by Wetpixel moderator Mike Veitch. He appeared early in the series and was repeatedly listed among notable previous guests in subsequent episode announcements ([7], [8], [9], [10]).

Notable Forum Threads

Conservation Advocacy

Abbott’s forum threads consistently reflect a strong conservation ethic. His “Fishing on dive boats” thread drew attention to illegal and unethical fishing practices near protected Indonesian dive sites. His “Reef hooks & pointers” thread engaged the community in a nuanced debate about the environmental impact of common dive equipment. He was actively involved in efforts to establish and enforce regulations for dive operations in Raja Ampat.

In 2014, Abbott provided a testimonial for a fundraising appeal for dive guide Housi Neuenschwander, who needed repatriation to Switzerland for a liver transplant. Abbott recalled first meeting Housi aboard the Pindito liveaboard in 2004, describing him as “a very passionate lover of the environment” ([16]).

Client Testimonials

Yeang Ch’ng, a Harvard MD-PhD student in neuroscience, won first place in the Nature & Landscape category of Microsoft’s Future Pro Photographer contest in 2006 with an underwater jellyfish image shot during a liveaboard trip with Graham Abbott’s Diving4Images in Raja Ampat ([17]).

Other forum members recommended Abbott’s services: “A fellow referred to me was Graham Abbott at diving4images.com, go to his site and you will get a lot more info. He is reasonable and very helpful!” ([18]).
