Biography
Alex Tattersall is a UK-based underwater photographer, Nauticam dealer, and workshop leader who has been an active member of the Wetpixel community since 2006. He operates Underwater Visions (uwvisions.com / nauticam.co.uk), the official Nauticam UK dealership, through which he supplies housings and accessories to photographers across the United Kingdom and serves as a key liaison between Nauticam and the European underwater photography community ([1], [2]).
Beyond his role as a dealer, Tattersall is an accomplished competition photographer and a contributor to Wetpixel’s editorial content. He was featured in Wetpixel’s “Ask the Pros” series alongside other leading professionals, and contributed gear reviews and a Full Frame portfolio to the site ([3], [4]).
Underwater Visions / Nauticam UK
Tattersall founded Underwater Visions, which became the primary Nauticam dealership in the United Kingdom. The business was a regular exhibitor at UK dive shows including the London International Dive Show (LIDS) and the DIVE Show at the NEC Birmingham. At these events, Tattersall staffed the Underwater Visions / Nauticam UK stand, demonstrating housings and new products ([5], [6], [7]).
He played a key role in facilitating Wetpixel’s gear reviews by lending housings to reviewers. He supplied the Nauticam NA-DP4 monitor housing for Adam Hanlon’s review, a Nauticam NA-D4 for Alex Mustard’s Nikon D4 field review, and helped get a housing to Wetpixel within five weeks of the Nikon D800’s release for their camera review ([8], [9], [10]).
In 2011, he was the contact for the FIT +16 wet diopter launch in the UK market ([11]). By 2017, the Underwater Visions team included Robert White and Pash Baker alongside Tattersall ([12]). In 2019, his dealership also loaned ONEUW 160X strobes to Alex Mustard for a field review ([13]).
Competition Results
Tattersall achieved recognition in several major international underwater photography competitions:
- 2011: Highly Commended in the Underwater World category at the BBC/Natural History Museum Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition ([14])
- 2012: Animal Behavior category winner at DEEP Indonesia 2012 for his “Indian Mackerel feed” image ([15])
- 2012: Fifth place in Wetpixel’s Picture of the Year 2011 (POTW 366) ([16])
- 2013: Placed in Ocean Views 2013 ([17])
- 2016: Bronze in the Macro Unrestricted category at Our World Underwater 2016 ([18])
He also contributed a supermacro image to Martin Edge’s book The Underwater Photographer ([19]).
Wetpixel Contributions
Tattersall wrote 2 guest articles for Wetpixel — a Canon G7 X field review and a piece on minimizing environmental impact underwater — published through Adam Hanlon’s editor account.
Editorial Content
- Canon G7 X Review (2015): Authored a detailed field review of the Canon Powershot G7 X in a Nauticam housing, testing the camera with Nauticam’s Compact Macro Convertor (CMC) and prototype wide-angle convertor in Lembeh and Manado ([20])
- Full Frame: Raja Ampat (2014): Featured portfolio from a photography workshop aboard the Indo Siren, run by Alex Mustard. Shot with Nikon D750 and 105mm VR macro ([21])
- Ask the Pros: Wide-Angle (2015): Featured as one of the professional photographers sharing wide-angle techniques ([22])
- UwP Magazine contributions: Wrote about solo diving for UwP Magazine Issue 61 (2011) and had his image on the cover of UwP Issue 57 (2010) ([23], [24])
- London Dive Show PhotoZone: Regular speaker at the PhotoZone area at LIDS ([25])
Workshop Leader
Tattersall led underwater photography workshops in destinations including Puerto Galera (Philippines) and Raja Ampat (Indonesia). He participated in workshops run by Alex Mustard and also led his own ([26], [27]).
Notable Forum Contributions
UK Diving Advocacy
Tattersall was one of the most visible UK-based members of the Wetpixel community. His “UK diving!” thread (46 replies) showcased macro photography from the cold waters of the English south coast, shooting flabellina nudibranchs and textures in 9-degree water with a Nikon D300s, 60mm macro, and Nauticam housing. The thread drew praise from Alex Mustard and Adam Hanlon ([28]).
Fiber Optic Triggering
In his “Fiber optic trigger - D7000 and INON Z240” thread (29 replies), Tattersall demonstrated the viability of fiber optic strobe triggering over traditional electronic bulkheads. He showed that setting the D7000’s internal flash to 1/128 power provided essentially instant recycle times, allowing rapid-fire sequences of 4 shots in under 2 seconds. The thread became a practical reference for photographers considering the switch from electrical to optical triggering ([29]).
Supermacro with Nauticam SMC
His “Nauticam SMC in Puerto Galera” thread (26 replies) showcased results from using the Nauticam Super Macro Convertor with a Nikon D7100 and 105mm macro lens during a workshop he ran in the Philippines. The mostly uncropped images demonstrated the SMC’s sharpness and strong magnification capabilities ([30]).
Sony RX100 Testing
Tattersall was an early tester of the Sony RX100 compact camera underwater, starting a thread (31 replies) that helped the community evaluate this camera’s potential for underwater use ([31]).
General Community Engagement
His most-replied thread, “Which regs do you use?” (91 replies), was an informal survey of the community’s diving regulator preferences — a reminder that the Wetpixel community was as much about diving as photography ([32]).
